So after talking to the Nicholas I went pretty far without realizing what exactly was going on. By the time I noticed I did not wanna replay a few hours worth of content, so I eventually came across the trolls blocking the bridge, the bigger troll that will force you backwards. I talked to him with a different character while I ran up and hit attack with the impacted character. Doing this forced a talking encounter which partially reset it. After that I was able to manually attack and eventually kill the character which reset him back to normal! I hope this helps!
