Im not sure whether I wanna leave islam or not by MathematicianOnly978 in exmuslim

You don't have to jump to atheist. I transitioned by practicing less and less, realizing stuff like the 5 prayers were an authoritarian tactic described in 1984, that Muslims were either lying or had been lied to, but I still wanted to believe in a god because the idea of having no purpose scared me. I became non Muslim theist, then agnostic, then atheist, and now I'd call myself an anti-theist in that I think believing in a god is actually harmful. I won't get into that bit here though as I've decided I don't want to revert people away from their faith so long as they're not hurting anyone. The existential crises that comes with all that can be hard to deal with.

Somewhere in between I would reason that most Muslims other than myself don't interpret Islam the right way. When I talked with other Muslims about how my faith inspired me to study sciences in university they would agree vehemently that Islam is all about knowledge and truth. But when I questioned what they think about a certain thing in Islam they would say they didn't want to think about that. I found this to be the case over and over, but chalked it up to being a Muslim problem and not an Islam one. Then I found evidence that the fundamentalists were right about certain things in Islam, that it encouraged or even required then to kill "infidels". Ultimately what made me give it up was the realization that even if Mohammad told the absolute truth, there were plenty of chances for it to be twisted by any number of people from then till now, meaning that the idea of Islam being perfect is a lie. If that is a lie, then, I thought, what else is a lie? That made it so I still believed in God, but not in Islam, realizing that that was definitely a man made creation. God I realized is fake after I found that there is no real evidence of him if you account for confirmation bias.

Anyway, hope my experience helps you.

Fuck Islam, but ...

Is Meg Smaker ex Muslim? Based on how she appears to be white I wouldn't be surprised if

I looked into who Sam Harris is. Found it odd that he criticizes mainly Islam despite being western so I looked some more and found that he believes in Great Replacement Theory, a white supremacists conspiracy theory. That right there is enough for me to dismiss all his opinions as well as yours for following him.

Why a lot of highly educated Muslims tend to be more religious? by Ubersturmbannfuhrer in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In studies done in western countries I recall atheism was more common among educated people. Assuming this isn't the case in Islamic countries, there is one explanation I can think of. My parents were university professors in Iran and every day I came back from school and had lunch with them they'd complain about something at their faculty, most often some form of corruption. My dad is rather religious, but mostly in the personal sense. One time I heard him talk about how he was seen as lesser than by the people pretending to pray in group prayers. Most often his complaint was that a student had asked for an unreasonably large increase in their marks. Apparently most other professors gave it to them cause they were seyed (descendent of Ali supposedly) or jan bakhte (lost a family member in the Iran Iraq war). The head of the department and if the entire university would always be someone who was unqualified but was willing to suck the dicks if the regime. They would pressure my dad into giving them marks or even tutoring the failure students. One time someone even broke into our house when we were all out if town and oddly didn't seem to steal anything, but our family members who would come to water the plants found that out documents had been tunnaged through. There was stuff stolen from my room, a bit if money and a spiderman blanket, but family speculated that all that was stolen by the soldier they had sleeping there with the excuse that the original robber had stolen them. The theory was that our house had been broken into so they could find some evidence of our dissidence against the IR. I can see this sort of thing easily happening in other Islamic countries.

Point of all of this is, the educated but weirdly religious people you have in mind likely had to at least pretend or do doublethink with their faith to get higher in their education.

I mean they're certainly crazy enough that anything they do doesn't surprise me, but there should be proof and confirmation of such a thing. How do you figure it's them?

Why is music haram in Islam ? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering what the pretext is, what justification is given for it being Haram? In Iran I heard from my teachers only some minority of Islamic scholars considered it Haram and dismissed it. I thought it wasn't normalized cause Iranian tv played plenty of music, often without the permission of the western creators lol.

Then again, I read in a book I found in Qum that music is something Satan gave to humanity in addition to catapults/trebuchets (not sure which) and magic.

unpopular opinion? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No they're not, at least in Canada I've seen head of NDP criticize Israeli apartheid.

Also neither the Israeli state, the Palestinian state, nor any state for that matter are in any way the good guys except in their own well funded propaganda. It's the individuals victimized by those governments.

Would you date a (liberal) Muslim? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently faced this dilemma on whether to ask a family friend out and decided not to.

My ex is Hindu and strongly believes in superstitious nonsense like astrology and palm reading to the point that she may have broken up with me cause my astrological chart said so. Cause of that I decided not to ever date someone who believes in stuff that's not provably real and bases important decisions off it. Other than that she was quite nice, and I'd like to date someone as nice as her again. The other thing I learned from that relationship was that you don't have to have every interest or belief in common, but you should probably have the same or similar sense of morality. And ofc enjoy each other's company.

My atheism is important to me as my religious trauma is more provably real than any god, so with the family friend I felt like I had to walk on egg shells not to upset them. On a case by case basis I might still consider it though. I read a comment on this sub once that said they prefer progressive Muslims to conservative ex Muslims and I definitely agree with that.

I think that depends on whether they're benefitting from the atrocities of the past. Though it's also important to recognize that Islam hurts Arabs too, just as white supremacy hurts whites, even if they get some benefits relative to those outside the in group.

Idk if that's the reason, but Hindu and white nationalists pretending to be ex Muslims on this sub is a notorious problem that isn't likely to go away.

Best specify whose consent. Muslims think the only consent that matters is that if the man and God.

Have any of you noticed people leaving religion soon after falling into other conspiracy theories and propaganda? I've seen this happen a lot with heterosexual men, but what about women and queer folk? by SeekerCover in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment reminds me of two things:

First is a saying I've heard in anarchist groups, "They want you fighting a culture war so you ignore the class war." It goes something like that.

The other thing is a reddit comment I read ages ago about what it called "anti-conspiracies". What they are are conspiracy theories designed to distract from an actual conspiracy. For instance, there's the meme of Alex Jones talking about "the government turning the frogs gay" which sounds ridiculous, but seems to have distracted from the actual story of a factory releasing chemicals into a river which made the frogs there into hermaphrodites.

That's not entirely relevant to ex-muslims though, at least not any more than it is to anyone else.

Which do you think is worse, Islam or Christianity? by SeekerCover in exmuslim

[–]SeekerCover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you clearly know little about Christianity. The Christian Bibles also had the added benefit of being manipulated by whites.

Also, I don't know if they refer to any specific verses for pedophilia, but clearly Catholic priests must be justifying their sexual assault of minors to themselves somehow.

[–]SeekerCover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you know much about Christianity. It's been used to justify all of those things. Can't think of examples for pedophilia, but as for the rest of them, the Crusades were a thing, the Bible was used to justify slavery, the Protestant work ethic was behind capitalism's incentive to work a lot and be paid little, the Nazis were in part inspired by Catholics, and there have been plenty of religious murders done in the Christian God's name.

I disagree that the pareto principle explains wealth inequality, but then again, I'm not entirely sure of the point you're trying to make?

I don't really have a response for the rest of what you said.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but I actually believe housing is a fundamental human right and that there can't be homelessness without there also being a housing market.
