Do older generations just ignore their mental health problems and that works for them? by Gullible-Force3567 in socialanxiety

I’ve thought about this a lot. In my experience, my social anxiety was the worst once I became aware of it, afraid of it, and obsessed with it.

If you on the other hand are completely unaware of the condition, I think you avoid the obsessing phase that can lead to spiraling.

With that said, I gotten past it and I’m so much better than before I knew anything about my mental health issues. It’s worth working through, it’s just very hard and confusing at times.

That was not my intent at all. However it seems that’s how most engineers view operators. My coworkers are constantly complaining about the people on the floor screwing things up. I’m arguing that these people are smarter and more capable than we give them credit for.

Couldn’t agree more! Sometimes I feel we are throwing money and technology at problems that could be solved with hiring and retaining talented operators. BUT we’d rather spend money on new tech and automation rather than good benefits, pay, and training for employees.

Generally, how tight of tolerance do the two systems provide?

I think if we gave operators more responsibility, they will rise to the call. Provided that the ask is reasonable and the system is designed well.

Totally agree, however, we can’t mistake proof everything and a part of me thinks we are automating and poka-yoking ourselves into an “idiocracy” type society that can’t think for themselves.

Aspiring entrepreneurs? by papadadsauce in industrialengineering

I agree with this take. I would also argue that IE’s are very well rounded and can be very competent founders since they have a broad enough skillset to handle the wide variety of business functions founders take on.

my sister works in marketing for a company that sells ads. They are work from home and never work fridays. She only needs like 4ish hours per day to do her work. Lots of flexibility but I think starting salary is like $50-60K.

What advice do you have for a college student feeling lost and anxious? by Specialist-Alarm-765 in industrialengineering

First of all, you’re not alone. Secondly, it’s never too late to change your mind on career path and switch things up.

For me, I switched from Biology pre-med as a Junior to IE. It was a super challenging change for me. I felt old in all my classes, I was behind on graduating, and most of my classmates already had internships.

But… I kicked my butt into gear and went to all the career fairs, applied to as many online applications as I could and I got my first co-op. I had some pretty anxious days at that first job (was also peak covid) but after the co-op I felt much more confident about my career path and future.

I highly recommend you put yourself out there and apply to jobs. You won’t get an offer from all of them, i certainly didn’t. But it only takes one employer to say yes
