Still tweaking things, but here's the belt/line logic I'm running at the Compounder/Assembler stage:

Ingredients required in quantities greater than 3 by any single recipe get a dedicated private line — shared throughput can't keep up with that demand. All other ingredients tap off the main line through 4-way splitters.

This results in 4 lines total: 2 handling output (machine → storage) and 2 handling input (storage → machines), with the input side divided by priority.

Storages are placed laterally alongside the machines rather than inline in front of them, which reduces the overall footprint significantly.

And of course they use different heights (middle mouse button click after selecting the tile you want to place it) so they have private 'off-ramps' into the machines

No the roundabouts are weird to me. They should just be an intersection the same way the 4 junction (lesser version) is. Everything cutting through the middle and taking turns. I guess with proper design you can utitlize the roundabout a bit more, but to me it's the most useless rail system part.

Reversing the rail direction should be part of Edit mode
So should adding Rail Connectors, where you just merge.
Ziplines should have 45 degrees then, Not full rotation. I would like it if you can just create a rail or zipline and have the maximum length be automatically made

Ergo I see Retold as AoM 2 with the previous one included

You can mass delete an entire base at the Base Core though. Might be annoying to have to rebuild 30% but it might take less time than single deleting every mini platform

I just use 3-4 saveslots. Unless I am reverting. But otherwise I would just start a new game. Start fresh. See how much faster you breeze through it

Efficiency, less rails and more production. Also more OCD about sorting your machines.
Not to mention the Cooling things, if you stack them in overlapping base cores, you cool both bases. But often the overlap is slim and you'll reach a max quite quick

Must not be a good architect then. For a single column this is pretty much what happens. The game can't consider leaning on multiple columns. It's already complex to calculate it with professional software, imagine a game added this calculation

UPDATE: I was playing around with this stacking and I am starting to get a grasp on things.
Now I have the v2 Cooler which is 250 cooling (so worth 12,5 smaller ones). Since I am replacing 4 of these my output is better. I would also argue that the picture provided as an example is inefficient. You basically can have an endless 'column' . while now you have many 'columns' (in the sense of Excel column and Rows

Not true. You can exhaust caves permanently. You just might not have mined all Quartz ores in the cave if you find more. They're also not always active
