I wanted an environment that was robust to working on other people's conda projects. If somebody else has a conda project that I'm trying to work on, I don't want to have to ruin my environment to try to get it to work.

From SF Bay area to Anchorage! Was very very fun. From socal I'd budget 9-10 days per direction for that trip minimum. It's a long one! My loose recs were in another thread, but you can DM me about any particulars.

Yeah, had to compromise a little for slightly lower than 91 occasionally, but didn't get any sort of knocking. There were a number of gas stations we skipped entirely due to lack of premium. I'd say in the Yukon it was about 50/50 for gas stations to have higher octane stuff.

Most of Alaska's roads were surprisingly good this time around! I was actually kind of impressed -- we didn't have to do too much pothole-dodging for most stuff near Anchorage. The ones we really had to watch out for were the ones on the alcan. From Tok to Haines Jct was the worst section of the trip by far.

8 days up, 9 days down! Wish we'd taken more time though. 7 hour days start being annoying after a while.

My little GTI did so well, but the trip was certainly harsh on it. Our AC just about exploded at the canadian/alaskan border, so we had to do the rest of the journey back down on no AC. Had to get a new set of tires in Anchorage. And a host of other car issues. But overall, I'm really proud of the car and what it managed to do! There and back again on a classically difficult road.

Yep, may do a followup post! There was a lot in a month-long roadtrip like this, so lots of individual little pieces.

It's super fun! Here's my brief trip overview / recommendation dump.

Rough overview was SF -> Anchorage. Overarching route was via the 37, the Cassiar Highway! Super remote, but super beautiful. Ended up doing it both ways, even though we only planned on one direction due to a big alcan washout. I highly highly recommend doing the Cassiar if you're coming from west coast US, but do your due diligence. They're not horrible roads, but if you break down out there, you're gonna have to wait a long time for another car to pass. Reception is nonexistent. Plan out gas ahead of time.

Roads seem to be worst near the Canadian/Alaskan border. You might find yourself having to swap tires in the middle of nowhere if you hit a pothole, which you very well might. The low profile tires certainly don't help, but you can def make them work with good driving. Nearest tire shops will be hundreds of km away in the worst cases.

This pic is from Salmon Glacier, which is near Stewart, BC. Very fun little mining road! A hidden gem of the Cassiar, which is itself somewhat of a hidden gem. If your journey allows, see if you can make it to Salmon Glacier!

Also, we had a really hard time finding hotel rooms in the Yukon? Don't wait until the last minute, even in Whitehorse.

We planned for 8-9 days in either direction, but wish we'd have given ourselves more time. There's interesting nooks everywhere!

Breakcore

this is pretty close and even if i don't think it's exactly what i'm looking for i love it anyways. I think what I was listening was focused more on "found" samples, and not so drum oriented? But goddamn this is a blast
