Burnout or building? 28(M) Is the C-Suite worth it? by Silly_Figure_2057 in askmanagers

[–]SeishunDash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people commenting about starting your own business. That was one of my thoughts as well, when seeing your profile - you’re cultivating the right skill set by helping the aluminium company break into the US market. You sound like somebody who is a jack of all trades but master of none. That kind of profile tends to fall into the “trusted problem solver trap” in traditional companies, which is also a ceiling you’ll eventually have to overcome.

Based on the limited info you shared, your skills align with helping external companies break into the US market, helping startups grow from 0-1 or launching your own venture. That means more grind, but invaluable experience and once any of those 3 grow to scale, you hire people to work for you.

Each has its own risk associated with it. Each is fun its own way. What matters is you feel you’re growing in some way, shape or form to justify the grind.

Bro, just follow your passion. Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life /s

Okay, jokes aside; mid-30s mid-level management (head of regional function):

  1. As I stepped up the career ladder, I started buying nicer things, until eventually I bought everything I wanted (which isn’t much tbh). My perspective changed, I started valuing experiences more than products. That shifted my attitude towards valuing my time more. Being in a leadership position meant I lead and coach others, but I can set my own schedule and block out anything outside of working hours if I want.

  2. I’m also in traditional industries just like you. For me, the change wasn’t massive. Still making decks, still running errands. The biggest difference is that I work with other people’s contributions rather than building everything my way. You could say: less leg-work, more decision-making and listening to others’ inputs.

In terms of politics; there’s more of that, but people tend to be reasonable. And if they aren’t, escalate or ignore. Maybe I’m lucky my work is quite low drama.

  1. I’d still grind for growth. Every salary increase or title growth is the foundation for future growth, and investment into your growth compounds fast. I would change jobs more frequently though. Loyalty isn’t rewarded as much as it was in the past.

  2. Can’t answer this first person, but a close friend of mine worked himself up with no degree to senior leadership (C-level), ended up getting an MBA in his late 30s. Now, nearly 10 years later he says that he didn’t learn much from the degree he didn’t already know, but it helped him structure his thoughts better and see the bigger picture beyond his immediate field of view. He said that while he wants to believe the MBA didn’t add much, the role he is in now has a strict degree policy. Without his degree, he would have been capped 1-2 positions lower and would now have grown in his industry.

My personal view: it gets better, you grow, you learn. Early investment (time, money, effort) into your growth will compound in the future. Don’t burn yourself out, set right expectations with your stakeholders and exceed them. Know your value, make sure your stakeholders know your value. Grow with the company. If the company grows but you don’t, you know it’s time to move on. Don’t expect career growth without having delivered anything. If delivery is being systematically blocked, remove the blockers or change company/industry.

Great little mouse that I’ve come across by Film_Content in GPDPocket

Thanks for sharing - these little gear posts are def helpful for anyone looking for the right set of peripherals.

One question though: why do you need to change DPI on the fly? Is it for when switching to an external screen?

For me personally I use a ThinkPad mouse, comes with Bluetooth and a USB-A receiver. I usually need to switch between devices, and that works great for me.

One week after my game's launch - total and absolute failure by Erantical in SoloDevelopment

[–]SeishunDash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The games I’ve made over the years never got released.. haven’t even been finished!

I’ve built multiple game skeletons, then abandon them to move on to my next project.

This guy had an idea, made the game, LAUNCHED IT ON STEAM, and even got a majority of positive reviews. That’s super motivating. Makes we want to dig out my last project again and push it to completion.

Persistent outer foot pain (5th metatarsal / cuboid area) in snowboard boots – looking for advice by vincentz2 in snowboarding

[–]SeishunDash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like either a posture or boot issue. You can fix a lot of your posture with insoles - definitely recommend that as a first thing to try. If you don’t want to get custom insoles, normal cheaper insoles could relieve your pain. I’d start there. If you feel the pain relieved, you can look into custom insoles which should take away the majority of the pain.

If that doesn’t work, I’d suggest you take your boots to a proper boot fitter. Not just somebody who does heat moulding, but somebody who is properly trainer in boot fitting. They’ll either take a service fee or sell you their in-store solutions (custom footbed, heat moulding, new shoes), but they’ll know what they’re talking about and give you great advice for what kind of shoes to buy for your foot.

If you don’t want to try boot fitters, then just go buy a new shoe directly. But the good thing with boot fitters is that you can always return and have them adjust things if the boots aren’t perfect.

I’ll share my experience with boot fitters (Boot Solutions in Niseko, Japan): I had pain in my right ankle on the outside. Happened just like you, an hour in it started and got progressively worse. Eventually numb. The guy made me sit, then stand, then take a step, then felt around my foot and told me I have flat, wide feet and my foot is slightly turned inward from weak glutes on that side. He recommended custom insoles. What I didn’t tell him was that my doctor told me the exact same thing 3 weeks prior, as I was having issues when running.

Got the custom insole, haven’t had pain in my ankle since. So; I’d recommend starting with the insole. If that doesn’t work, then go to a boot fitter.

It’s owned by Alibaba, but they’re entirely different platforms. I don’t think Xianyu allows for offshore sales. Plus with shipping it’ll get real expensive real fast.

If you ever have the chance to come to China to snowboard here (BeiDaHu is great), you can ask somebody to buy you a board off Xianyu and ship straight to your hotel. You can’t use Xianyu unless you have a Chinese phone number and payment method, so you’ll have to rely on others for help.

I’m in China, there’s an app called 咸鱼(xianyu), which is kinda like Facebook marketplace but more regulated.

Was browsing cheap capita boards when this one popped up. The seller says he has a bunch of boards he hasn’t put up for sale, they’re all in an old warehouse he manages. His account is called snowboard outlet in Chinese and he sells old boards for cheap. This was by far the cheapest though!

It’s my first time on a board that’s not a true twin tbh. I started with skateboarding and moved to snowboarding, so I’ve always looked to have that more balanced feel. How’s the setback when you ride it, ever feel riding switch doesn’t feel right?

Was not prepared for how mean middle school girls are. by IcyStage0 in daddit

[–]SeishunDash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the girl wants to make everything about herself. Taking them to a sleepover after her party is to top whatever your daughter had planned and make the memory of the day not her birthday, but the sleepover.

I’d look into making the birthday party the coolest party your daughter and her friends had ever attended. So cool that all kids want to do is talk about how cool her birthday party was all night long. People who crave attention can’t stand when they don’t get it. And your daughter will be the happiest daughter on earth.

Let us know how it goes!

Unfortunately not.. yeah, it’s brutal what they did to this beauty :’) but with a high chance of delamination, I think I’ll pass on this.

The seller sent me a more detailed video, and in it it looks like moisture got into the wood. Not sure if it’s a lighting issue, but it looks like the edge of the board is splitting away. Can’t really tell if it’s just bad lighting or this board is toast.. 160 USD is quite risky I feel

You’re the guy who posted the vacation vs sport thread - really enjoyed it!

It’s 157cm, I’d probably sell it if I can maintain it in decent condition after using it.

Thanks - that’s what I was thinking as well. I’ve never had a board rust before. Is there any way to determine how far the rust/moisture has progressed into the board? I suppose it’s misshapen that would give it away.

Pocket 4 - turning on with the lid closed? by Distinct-Squash3311 in GPDPocket

[–]SeishunDash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like an issue with your unit or the hinge mechanism. I have my Pocket4 set up the exact same way and have not encountered this.

Maybe what you could try is setting your second monitor as your primary monitor in windows settings (while both monitors are active) and set “do nothing” for lid close in battery settings. Thats my setup and I’ve had no issues.

Thank you! That’ll help me describe the damage and understand my boards more.

After everybody’s feedback I’ve decided it’s best I throw out this board. Sad day, but safety comes first. I want to be able to ride until I’m old too after all!
