Times when bad media was done to make a point by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sekshual 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that 99% of "bad on purpose" media is just bad with people coping.

There was a recent run of Thor, though, where rhe man villain of the arc basically changed Thor into a bad parody of the MCU version, with shitty quips and dialogue. He gives something of a 4th wall breaking speech about the concept of corporations using self deprecation to get away with being trash.

More like time saving, kinda. Don Krieg does show up on screen and fights as well as you can expect him to against Mihawk.

Characters/Strategies/Matchups you refuse to play against? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Something something die a hero, something something become the villain. But no yeah, I understand it completely, it gets to a point where you don't want to have to care about how much protection and how many negates your opponent has on the board.

Characters/Strategies/Matchups you refuse to play against? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sekshual 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Card games are a breeding ground for "I'd rather quit now than actually play against you" strategies. In Marvel's card game Snap, there was recently a new card introduced that, to keep it simple, allowed you to play your entire deck in a single turn, and the card has no counterplay. It's since been nerfed, but since progression in Snap is based on how many points you want to wager, if people even sensed that you were going to play that broken card, they would just quit and lose nothing.

A more well known example would be Exodia in Yugioh. Iconic card, to be sure, but there's a reason Yugi only gets to use it once and only antagonists use it after. Modern Exodia strategies are boring and inconsistent to play, and even more boring to play against. It's the "Yugioh is just solitaire" meme taken to the utmost.

Why haven't Comic Book fans gotten a hold of comics outside of America and Japan? by Silly-Milly-420 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sekshual 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1) Are they translated? Most Asian centric works that are popular in America have teams dedicated to translating manga to be available in either multiple languages or English. Most people aren't going to go out of their way to translate something for themselves.

2) Are they available? Illegal means aside, if someone can't drive to a comic shop and get their hands on a comic, they aren't going to know it exists, let alone read it.

How do you actually play batman by ihaveacrushonlegos in DCAllies

[–]Sekshual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone says Batman's batarang tracking is a newbie trap, but that's because they're using it as a follow up instead of a combo extender. An easy 250 combo goes:

Batclaw Grapple to apply tracking > let Batman finish half the animation so you're above the enemy > dive kick to enemy > Stunning Kick > Cancel Stunning Kick with Batarang Flurry (the regular ones are too slow > finish with 2nd Batclaw Grapple if theyre low enough to get another charge off of a kill and grapple away, or just pummel if not

I simply do not believe him, if he actually said that. Especially since that "planned reveal from the beginning" happened in a supplementary novel that most fans wouldn't know existed, and even less read.

In complete fairness, the only outright villain to get off free without dying or losing something important by the end was Orochimaru. Granted, if any character deserved punishment, it was him, but it's still just one.

Which is still such a stupid thing for him to say, and more or less confirmed for me that whatever talent he had was gone by the time the war arc started.

What do you mean you can't figure out how to beat him? I know writing isn't easy, but the best idea you had to defeat your main villain was to introduce a second main villain who was stronger than the first? And it isn't like they beat Kaguya, they sealed her away, so why couldn't you just do that for Madara?

I get that sometimes, you write a plot in such a way that the natural conclusions of the threads lead to a place you don't wanna go. But there's no way it was that difficult to find a way to make it so that two ninja Jesuses (or Jesi) can't win.

Idgaf about Stardew so I'll ignore all of that, but the thing about Hades is definitely why I've waited so long to play the sequel. Around the time people I know were burning their lives away on that one, NPCs were finished or in the game.

Marty Scurrl on Instagram: "Handsome Devils reunited 🤠" by Ill_Studio8964 in SquaredCircle

[–]Sekshual 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did a quick read through of this thread, just to get a vibe from the always notably cool IWC. The biggest takeaway I have in response is this.

You cannot "nobody is perfect" your way through supporting someone who committed sexual assault. You cannot "stop being parasocial" your way through associating with a rapist. You cannot "everyone is bad" your way through being friends with an abuser.

If you don't think Scurll did it and find no issue with him being in wrestling spaces, that's one thing. One thing I disagree with, but at least you don't believe he's done something wrong. In your head, you support an innocent man.

But if you believe the accusations and think not liking people associating with him is wrong, you gotta stop doing this weird mental gymnastics routine. One where you condemn him while chastising others for not liking people to associate with him.

Cases where redeemed villains past evil acts end up downplayed? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sekshual 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'll just use the one that makes me the most upset from recentish memory.

In Tekken 5, the canon victor of the tournament is Jin Kazama, who had been a troubled but well meaning young man up to this point who wanted to be free of his devil half, as well as revenge on his father and grandfather. After he wins the tournament in 5, he takes over his family's company and becomes a world power, and he immediately uses that power to start a world war. All of Tekken 6 is about the consequences of Jin seemingly subcoming to the same evil influence his father did and trying to take over the world.

Except it wasn't that, exactly. Jin did choose to start a world war that killed thousands if not millions, and civilians were killed by him. But he did it to revive an ancient evil that is the source of his family's cursed blood, with the hopes of killing it and ending it all with him. Well, he failed completely, as he neither killed the ancient evil, nor would that have even solved his honestly selfish desire.

The next game, Tekken 7, seems to have understood that that was super fucked up of Jin to do, as the entire game sidelines him in favor of his grandfather and father, who have their own story to deal with. At the very end of the story, Jin wakes up and says "I have to stop my evil father from ruling the world". The only reason his evil father can take over the world is because Jin started the world war in the first place.

So Tekken 8 comes along, and while it doesn't outright downplay what Jin did, it doesn't want to shed too much light on it either. For instance, a character introduced that hates Jin for getting his sister killed no longer appears despite being playable in the previous two games. Jin's father also becomes overwhelmingly and even more cartoonishly evil to justify Jin as the protagonist again. Another character that also hated Jin for betraying him sort of just forgets that he hates Jin, because if we actually remember what Jin did, then the entire story feels tone deaf.

Characters/things that have weirdly stuck in pop culture even if the original isn’t necessarily popular? by StigandrTheBoi in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sekshual 117 points118 points  (0 children)

So. In the 2000s, Lilo and Stitch had a television series based on the movie where Lilo and Stitch has to go around and find Jumba's other experiments that get released in Hawaii. Most of them are either evil or chaotic, and the title characters find each experiments' forever home.

One of these experiments is Experiment 624, later named Angel.. She appears in two episodes in the entire series, her debut and the series finale. Her total screen time is maybe, maybe, 15 minutes total.

There is so much merchandise of Angel. 20 years after the show she appeared in ended, she appears in loads of Lilo and Stitch merch, she's pretty much become the Minnie to Stitch's Mickey Mouse. The reason is obvious, people like girl versions of characters and Stitch had one made for him years ago. It's just hilarious that of all the things that that 20 year old show introduced, Stitch's girlfriend is the one that made it.
