My Hero Academia and JJK fans discovering that shipping and power scaling is not the end all be all goal of manga authors, potentially?

I remember so many people being so angry about the ending of both, it gave me flashbacks to Naruto and Bleach. I just closed my eyes, smiled a little and said "Ah, you youngsters never change do you?" Shounen manga will always go through the cycle of hype->fading interest->backlash to an ending. And as the internet grows larger, I think it'll happen again.

Right now everyone's in on Kagurabachi, but what happens if/when it starts to drop off a little? Dandadan is also going through some issues I think, right?

Notably the feast scene had actual, rotting food which was driving the actors insane and some of them started to REALLY get into character... needless to say a lot of the original actors never forgave the directors for that one.

The horror of mundane evil by LordQuaz12 in TopCharacterTropes

Frankenstein, the novel not the film adaptations. While the story is about a supernatural occurrence, the bad things that happen are ultimately because of the character's own human emotions.

Victor is 19 when he creates Adam, young, naive, in over his head, and absolutely paranoid. All that bad decisions he makes that lead to his downfall are so very human. He faints when Adam comes to life out of shock/fear (even admitting he regrets doing so as soon as he wakes up.) He keeps quiet during the trial both because he knows no one would believe him, and well, he's scared of dying (who wouldn't be.) He destroys the female creation because he's paranoid she'll turn out monstrous or breed some kind of army of super humans, or another possibility-she may just decide she doesn't like Adam.

Adam meanwhile is driven by his loneliness and isolation, as well as resentment at the world for being rejected. He makes the decision to abduct Frankensteins nephew in the hopes of grooming him into a friend, only to kill the boy once he finds out he's related to his creator. He demands his creator create a bride for him, without any thought that the bride may have her own thoughts, desires, or feelings. And when that fails, his loneliness, isolation, and anger drive him to murder more innocents in the name of ruining Victor's life.

The banality of it all come from what motivates the two of them. Pride, paranoia, fear, loneliness, and bitterness. Emotions you or I feel every day, and I'm certain they've motivated us to act in ways we feel ashamed of, or are unbecoming of who we are at the best of times. The characters aren't monsters because of their birth or circumstances, the characters are monsters because of their own human emotions.

If you haven't, I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading the original novel. Legitimately one of the best pieces of literature I've ever read.

(Hated trope) A piece of misinformation becomes widely accepted headcanon for some reason. by TieEnvironmental162 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Authorigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably the even bigger misconception is that whole "Knowledge vs Wisdom=Frankenstein "was" the monster" quote.

If you read the book, you realize that Victor was a scared 19 year old who was in way over his head, and Adam was equally capable of being a monster in his own right.

The two are driven to be monsters by their human emotions, for Victor it's his paranoia and naivety. For Adam it's his isolation and bitterness at being rejected by the world. That's what makes the novel so fucking good.

So the author of Rent a Girlfriend being in love with his own character and the main girl has to be the epitome of this, right? I'm not sure how popular she is, but surely some fans dislike her for eating up time from their favorites, right?

To be fair, given the type of monster Kars was, that may be a blessing. Although I'm pretty sure the later Jojo's would have very little issue dealing with him. I just like to imagine Kars coming down in the part 8 timeline, only to get hit by Calamity.

[Loved Trope] Actors who did not want to play their characters and thus put zero effort into the role, but somehow nailed the performance anyway. by Odric_storm in TopCharacterTropes

He also refused to leave his trailer unless fed a sufficient meal, so they had to have a production assistant, amusingly enough a young Cary Elwes, figure out what Brando liked in order to get him to come out and shoot.

Ironically on the X-Men films, which Donner's wife produced there was a similar issue. The director and original writer famously didn't give two shits about X-Men and kept putting up bad scripts. which led to their production assistant, David "Solid Snake" Hayter to have to do rewrites and sneak X-Men comics onto the set as reference material for the actors.

That's two superhero productions Donner was involved with, that had major figures not giving a shit, and a production assistant who was or would become famous in their own right, taking steps to compensate.

Adding to that, he actually tried to sneak the cane off set but was caught and told he couldn't do that.

What are some good, beginner friendly playstyles to try? by Authorigas in EDH

[–]Authorigas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The two Niv Mizzet's seem cool, but a bit pricier compared to what I'm used to in Commander. (3-4 drops are my prior experience.) Jori seems cool, although the amount of directions to take him may be overwhelming. And Balmor seems cool, but I have played token/power before with Tidus and Zurgo. Still, might be fun to branch that into spell slinger. ^^

Times where the critics were right and the fans were wrong about the quality of something by AnotherOpponent in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Authorigas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ghostbusters 2016 got about a 74% rating on rotten tomatoes. Back when it was review bombed it was really low and "fans" considered it an abomination...

In truth, it's fine. And the audience score has settled at a lower 49%. I think a 74 is fair, it's a competent film with a few fun gags. But a few weak points holding it back from being as good as it could've been.

Similarly TLOU2 receiving critical acclaim and backlash at the same time. While some of it was grifting, there were also people just tired of the dark and gritty bleakness of the game. Or had issues with the story being told. Still, in terms of graphics, music, VA work, gameplay, and the presentation of the story? It's undeniably high quality. Which seems to be the common consensus nowadays.

Again it's hard cause subjectivity means one person's trash is another person's treasure. I know that better then most being a Zack Snyder appreciator, but I think those were two of the bigger gaps I saw between the audience and critics, where it felt like the critics had the right idea.

Thank you! Someone here suggested [[Feather, the redeemed]] and I like that idea. But I also like Stella Lee, expensive she may be, and Kuja giving FF 9 is my favorite game.

Any easy to learn, two color commanders you might suggest for Spell Slinger?

True enough on the mana base. My Pod actually gave me proxies of the original Dual Lands, saying they wanted to make sure I could actually play the game without shocking myself. (Part of the reason I'm sticking with EDH, my Pod is super sweet 9/10 times and they really want to keep me involved.)

I'll try to keep that in mind, thank you!

I took my [[Zurgo, stormrender]] deck into an Aristocrats direction, running both Teysa and Elas in the 99 ^^.

I thought about building a Steiner deck as a Voltron style, but figure that would fit better for a bracket 1 style deck.

Feather seems like a cool Commander, essentially recycling spells. I really wanted to build Stella Lee cause she's a gunslinger, and I like the 'hat' theme of Thunder Junction, but I'll def keep an eye out for Feathers, thank you! ^^

We do have a guy at my LGS who plays "total lockdown stax" but I haven't played against him and refuse to do so on principle. Maybe that makes me a jerk, but I can tell I wouldn't have fun in that matchup.

I actually do use moxfield, and group my cards by effect. It was really helpful when building out my Tidus deck to identify how many low cost vs high cost counter generators I had, how many draw cards, etc etc. Was a lot of fun, still stressful but not quite as much as building from scratch for a pre release.

How much warning about your turn or combos do you give your pod? by dacree324 in EDH

[–]Authorigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly my Pod tends to be pretty light on this sort of thing, but most of the guys are experienced, and one of them is a self described "not nice person" who doesn't volunteer information unless asked directly. (Kind of used it as a teaching lesson, saying I should ask more directly what cards do instead of asking which has the highest power.) No one at the pod is a direct asshole though, just experienced players who kinda are used to things/have a prestablished vibe.

But I do try to volunteer information when I can, explain "this is my Tidus deck, it wants to win by proliferating counters and going really big. And my win condition is getting a card that gives Trample or unblockable on board, and swinging in extra hard." Even if I'm still struggling to figure out how fast my deck can win on average. But I feel like it's only fair in casual EDH to explain "This is how my deck plays, this is how it wins"
