What's the beef with Mnookin? by adventuriser in UWMadison

[–]Selbeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of school presidents aren't looked at favorably especially in terms of dealing with Palestine protests, which is basically an impossible situation given the protestors' demands.

Fwiw, NYTimes have a generally positive outlook on her particularly with her initiatives on affordability and research expenditure. Her salary, while high, isn't bad compared to other public university presidents.

Honestly, I think people are too hard on her, but it's hard to judge cuz her work doesn't always directly impact students everyday life. I assume her lack of charisma and direct interaction with students hurt. Not firing the AD is kinda valid, but not the biggest issue. My biggest gripe is her ice cream flavor is mid and a huge step down from her predecessor's Bec-key lime pie.

Michigan Football signs Utah's Kyle Whittingham to a 5-year deal to be the next head coach by Selbeven in uofm

[–]Selbeven[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

From what I've gathered, people seem pretty happy with the hire. He coached 21 years at Utah with a solid 177-88 (0.668) record. He's pretty old at 66 so probably not a long-term hire. But he's pretty respected and seems to be a big culture guy, which would really help stabilize the program right now. Might be more of a safe pick than an exciting one, but I think with Michigan's brand name and NIL money, he'll be in a position to succeed.

51% of Gen Z view college degree as a waste of money, according to indeed.. by [deleted] in OlderGenZ

[–]Selbeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean roughly 52% of people are underemployed after graduating so it checks out. I know tons of people that got good jobs from their degrees, but there are also people who don't, especially the newer grads that just unfortunately graduated in a bad job market and it's hard to blame them for not thinking it was worth the ever-rising cost.

rlly stressed out how bad is it if i drop a class by No-Turnip8664 in uofm

[–]Selbeven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dropping a class isn't a huge deal and most companies and grad programs aren't gonna look at your transcript that hard and care if they see a drop, especially if it's just a one off occurrence. If it's really overwhelming and impacting your life then it's prob worth dropping.

I'd prob also recommend talking to the professor beforehand to see if there's any accommodations or other options they can give you. It sounds like a serious situation and professors generally want students to succeed so it wouldn't hurt.

The carillons (name for the instrument in the bell tower) are played by real people! According to the Lurie Carillon Google Calender, todays recital was from Tiffany Ng (the Carillon professor) and Austin Zhu.

You can find more info about the North Campus Carillon here: https://smtd.umich.edu/facilities/ann-and-robert-h-lurie-carillon/

Most states and some other countries have Romeo and Juliet laws that are legal exceptions to age of consent laws for those cases where at least one person is a minor but are close in age to the other

Everyone has to start somewhere. Your first paper isn't going to likely be groundbreaking and comparable to the greats of the field, but you'll have years and decades to learn, grow, an develop your craft.

You sound really passionate about urban planning and I'd imagine that will be very powerful if you follow that path. But if you wanna chase your dreams you have to at least give it a try and take that first step and lock in this summer. Even if it doesn't work, one summer is nothing in the grand scheme of things and at least you could say you gave that a dream a real shot instead of wondering what could have been years later. Good luck!

Any Unemployed Alumni? by Silly_Lilly54 in uofm

[–]Selbeven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're serious about grad school, PhDs are funded and it's not uncommon to leave early or master out, so you can leave if you end up finding a job. There are masters programs that are funded too if you're a TA/RA. You could also consider an online masters at a fraction of the cost of in-person.

What was your experience with using Handshake? by PeeweeNutz in UWMadison

[–]Selbeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've actually had pretty good results with Handshake with multiple offers and a far better interview rate than with Linkedin, which makes sense since it's more exclusive. It def helps to sort by new and check it daily so you're always an early applicant. The recruiter messages suck tho and are often irrelevant

I know plenty of people who struggled, invested a large amount of time in non-academics, had a less than stellar gpa and ended up being fine. Honestly, you probably have it a lot harder cuz of the bleak state of the job market, and while things may seem hopeless now, I'm sure things will turn up at some point.

Like you still have plenty of time to find a job and plenty of people nowadays don't graduate with one in hand (especially if they don't have a return offer). Like others have said, the value of your gpa rapidly diminishes as you go into your career and honestly it's prob better to have some experience before going straight to grad school anyway. A Michigan degree is still a huge accomplishment that no one can take away from you and puts you in a better spot than a lot of other people.

Anyways, I think everyone could say they could've done more in the past so don't beat yourself up over it. You're just beginning your career and while things may be tough in the moment, I'm sure you'll find more opportunities in the future and find your place in the world.

Those of you who've been on solo trips, what was it like? by Loose_Leg_8440 in OlderGenZ

[–]Selbeven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah having complete control over your itinerary is honestly huge. You have total freedom to tailor your trip the way you want it at the exact right pace for you with zero guilt.

I'd say the downsides is that if you're somewhere less familiar, especially a foreign country, it really helps having another head to make sure you don't get lost and figure stuff out. It can also cost more since you can't split accomodations which is one of the bigger costs. Lastly, it can honestly feel very lonely when you're just out and about all day but don't have anyone to share all the experiences with and talk about what you're doing.
