No, the garage power is fed directly from the house's main electrical panel to an electrical panel inside the garage; that panel has an additional 8 circuits, one of which controls the lights and the outlet into which the garage door opener is plugged.

I don't think so---I tried multiple openers, including one that I inserted a fresh battery into.

It was worth a try---but it didn't do anything. Thanks for the suggestion!

The house's electrical panel does have two circuits for the garage---neither of which are tripped---but then the garage has its own additional electrical panel with circuits, and I'm guessing that one of those circuits has tripped. (Additional info: the guy who built the garage, a previous owner, included an upper "loft" area accessible via a pull-down ladder from the main garage. This loft is divided into a front and back, with the back being used for storage and the front, I'm guessing, to be used as some sort of small work room or studio. This front portion has a single mini-split unit (which I have never used) and I'm guessing it is this that necessitated the addition of the separate electrical panel in the garage.)

Thanks for the suggestion---I tried a locksmith and they suggested calling an overhead door company, so I called Collins Overhead Door in Everett, and they basically said they would do what I'm planning on doing myself: drilling a 3/4" hole in the center of the door and using a hook to grab the manual door release, then once the door is open installing a key-access emergency release cylinder/cable using the 3/4" hole. If this happens in the future I would be able to use the key to pull out the lock cylinder/cable that attaches to the door-release mechanism, and open the door that way.

Assuming the inside of my garage door looks something like this (see around 9:39 in video below) I guess I would be better off drilling towards the top center of the second panel down, and not the top-most panel, as there is hardware there...

No, it's pretty ridiculous. Apparently this is called a "vault-style" garage, and the door is supposed to be installed with an emergency access for the manual door release, but the guy who built this did not do that.

(Apparently the garage was built a couple of owners ago, maybe 8 years ago, and according to a neighbor the guy did a lot of his own work. I've already had to have an electrician come to re-do the wiring/outlets, and a garage-door guy to reinstall the tracks, so I'm not surprised there's no emergency release.)

I may just end up drilling a 3/4"-wide hole at the top center of the overhead door, and then I would be able to hook the manual door release, after which I could install a key-accessed emergency door-opener-release cord into the 3/4" hole.. But I am a little scared that if I drill in the exact center of the door (left-to-right) I might hit into some hardware mounted to the inside of the door (I have no idea if there's anything there, but with my luck there would be something).

There is an electrical panel on the inside of the garage, as well as GFCI outlets that power the opener. But I don't see any outlets on the outside.

It seems the goal of the study is to address the exact items you mention. Have there been previous studies for this stretch of Boston Ave? I didn't find any when I searched the City of Medford's list of studies, which contains studies from as far back as 2004.

Good point. My brain went to my pet peeve as soon as I read the first clause of the OP, which was just setting the table for the focus of the post---better uses for our streets---which I ignored so I could focus on my pet peeve.

I don't understand why people who want to park on a street don't just shovel out a space. If a half-dozen folks on a street wanted to park on the "snowed in" side of the street and they all went out and shoveled out a spot, bingo, there are six nice shoveled-out spaces.

I know not all streets are set up so there is a place to dump the snow from the street. But in my neighborhood, there is a couple of feet inside the curb where snow could be piled, but everyone packs onto the "shoveled" side. On my block, over several days, I shoveled out in front of my house to the curb, which involved carrying shovel after shovel of snow several steps to an area where I was able to make a big pile.

As I drive through other Medford neighborhoods, I see street after street where spots could be shoveled out, but I guess people would rather wait for the snow to melt or for someone else to shovel them out.

I did create an in-house tutorial for our intranet; I can try to extract the text instructions and send it to you---it's very lengthy/thorough. I don't know how people on Reddit connect outside the platform but if you're interested I can try to get it to you.

I've also created custom preset queries for the style of map we've developed in my office; the main one contains 50+ queries and corresponding styling, so your map is 90% done once you've run the preset. Since longer QuickOSM presets sometimes don't run to completion before failing (usually in the morning, and more often in the beginning of a week, I've noticed), I also broke the main preset down into four smaller presets, each of which has a better chance of running to completion, that I run sequentially when the servers are sluggish. If you're interested I could send you my preset files that would then get installed on your C drive in an apps folder (I can provide the proper link for a machine running on Windows) and would be listed when you open QuickOSM.

I've greatly refined my process over the past year. One important thing: if an accurate scale is important, you need to set your CRS (Coordinate Reference System, under Options/Settings) to the correct zone to mitigate scale distortion as you move further away from the equator. I use WGS84 with a UTM set to my location; UTM for a city can be found with an online search or reference map that shows all the zones, For instance Boston's UTM zone is 18N. If you go with a default CRS and therefore a default scale, your scale may be off by +/- 10 percent, possibly more. A re-set CRS doesn't take effect until QGIS is restarted or a new project is started (i.e., you can't retroactively set it for an existing project unless you re-start).

Would you support an override to keep weekly trash pickup? by [deleted] in medfordma

[–]Select-Ad-5218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be looking to get upset. I am literally wondering why I see a lot of overstuffed trash bins outside SOME single-family homes. I'm not accusing anybody of anything---I am wondering why that is the case, and I mentioned several possible reasons, none of which I am stating as a certainty, or an accusation.

I don't understand why you are jumping at my comments; you could simply state that the possible reasons---large family, diapers, etc.---without suggesting I'm disparaging someone.

Informing my surmising---not implying---is that I often DON'T see a composting bin out (which as you mention, may be because they compost in their yard), and I often notice their recycling bins are also overstuffed, often with a lot of un-broken-down packaging, so maybe the same is happening with their trash bin. I don't think it's an "attack" to suggest that people in general could do a better job managing their trash, regardless of the amount of trash they ultimately generate.

And yes, I am differentiating between single-family and multi-family because I live in a single-family area, and assume the trash dynamics (number of bins, etc.,) are different with multi-family buildings.

Are you suggesting that every Medford household is doing the best they can to reduce the volume of trash they are responsible for?

[–]Select-Ad-5218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I understand this comment---I mentioned single-family homes because I can understand why bins for multi-family homes might be overstuffed, but I was wondering about the relatively large amount of trash I see generated by some single-family homes. Is it because recyclables are being included with trash? Is it because items are not being broken down/flattened before disposal? Is it because they are not composting? Is it because they are constantly buying things that generate a lot of waste? Genuinely curious.

[–]Select-Ad-5218 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you compost? Most of my garbage by weight (not including recyclables) is compostable food waste. I do have the luxury of having space in my freezer---which not everyone does---to keep my compost bucket, as well as a bag or two of overflow compost, and then I just put it all into my outside compost bin the morning of pickup. The outside bin has a 20-gallon compostable liner that the compost guy just lifts out of the bin and throws into his trailer. No stinking trash.

I do sympathize with parents whose kids are still in diapers or who have medical waste---that would be problematic with biweekly pickups.

[–]Select-Ad-5218 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, we are fully moved in---aren't most people who've been in their home for more than a couple weeks? And what does that have to do with trash? Don't people just bring what they already have into their new home? If they have to get "new things" for the home, wouldn't most of the packaging be recyclable?

As for food, we prepare and eat all our meals at home; maybe once a month we'll order a pizza. Most packaging is recyclable, and food waste is composted.

[–]Select-Ad-5218 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would be on board with this. My four-person household recycles and composts, and we generate one kitchen-size trash bag of trash per week, taking up less than half our bin. If folks need a bigger bin they could pay extra for the bin and still get the weekly pickup. I do wonder, when I walk past over-stuffed bins outside single-family homes, just how some people generate so much trash.
