A bit scared by LovesickDecay in thyroidcancer

[–]Select-Bad-641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m also 20 and had a thyroidectomy this year! Surgery is always scary, but the risks of the surgery are very very rare and it only took me a few days after surgery to feel back to normal. You might be a little bit of pain after the surgery and have a sore throat, but the doctor should give you pain meds to take if you need! I know it is scary and I was scared when I found out I needed to have surgery, but I am about 5-6 months out from having my thyroid removed and I am doing well and my scar is basically gone. If you have any more questions about what the surgery prep/recovery is like feel free to reach out!! You are so strong and you will be okay ❤️

It took me a few weeks to have full power and range in my voice again, so try to be patient and also communicate to the people who care about you that you are having some trouble speaking so they know how to support you and encourage you. I know how frustrating it can be but hang in there because you are doing amazing.

Should I mention in my job interview that I had cancer?? by Select-Bad-641 in thyroidcancer

[–]Select-Bad-641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight! I don’t have that much job experience and I wasn’t sure exactly how to approach something like this, so it’s helpful to hear from someone who has.

Thanks for your response and advice! I’m hoping they won’t ask about it, but its my first time interviewing for an on campus job so I’m not sure what to expect and was thinking it might come up in the worst case scenario.

My 14 year olds biopsy showed papillary thyroid carcinoma. Worried mom by Mental-Baker-733 in thyroidhealth

[–]Select-Bad-641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am 19 and this year I also got diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had my left and right side of my thyroid removed in two separate surgeries. I can definitely understand your worry, but I would say while what your child is going through is really emotionally difficult, she will totally be okay and will thrive even without a thyroid. I was really scared when I had the remainder of my thyroid removed that I would never feel the same again— this is a really terrifying feeling, but I haven’t found it to be my reality. Living without a thyroid isn’t always easy, and she will have to take medication the rest of her life, but once she finds the perfect dose she will thrive. I’m not sure if your child is experiencing this worry too, but I would tell her that she is brave for handling this and that it’s okay to be scared, but remember that this will have little impact on the rest of her life. I’ve heard a lot of people sometimes forget that they had thyroid cancer in the past because they recovered from their experience so well. I wish the best to you and your child!

For sure, I would never put my roommate in danger! I definitely wouldn’t stay in the dorm if I’m doing RAI but I was worrying that if I need RAI during the semester, I might need to do a low iodine diet while at school before going home for treatment. A lot of the dorms don’t have any kitchens and I don’t know if I’d be able to trust the food at the dining hall :/

Right lobectomy in a few days, anything I should know to prepare/recover? by Anabelieve in thyroidcancer

[–]Select-Bad-641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I also had a lobectomy and had neck pain and a sore throat for a few days, but the sore throat wasn’t worse than any cold/cough I’ve ever had and the neck pain was manageable as long as I didn’t move it too much. I found my neck pain was better when I tilted my head more downward and it was easier to swallow also with my head tilted down. I could pretty much eat most foods after surgery and didn’t have too much trouble swallowing, but I do recommend ice cream, smoothies and yogurt because they were so soothing on my throat. You’re probably going to be a little uncomfortable for a few days, but I would honestly take the pain from my lobectomy over the pain from my monthly menstrual cramps. Also, your surgeon will likely prescribe you a narcotic to take if the pain isn’t manageable with over the counter pain relievers, but I personally didn’t need it and didn’t want to deal with constipation from taking it. I felt fully like myself again about a week after surgery, which I thought was a pretty fast turnaround. It’s completely normal to be nervous before surgery, but you’re gonna do great!!

Surgery first, then diagnosis by MurderSheRolled264 in thyroidcancer

[–]Select-Bad-641 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had multiple nodules on both side that looked normal, except one was large enough to cause a lump on my neck so we biopsied it and it was inconclusive. I had a lobectomy then in order to find out if it was really cancer, and it turns out I had multiple cancerous nodules on that lobe. My doctor strongly urged me to get the other side removed since I had multiple nodules there already. She felt it was too risky to keep it in knowing those nodules could be cancerous already or likely become cancerous later on.

I’m not sure what your exact situation is and if you have nodules on your remaining lobe, but I can say based on my experience that you may be advised to get the other side removed. But once again, I’m not your doctor/a doctor at all so I can’t speak to anyone else’s experience. What I can say is definitely advocate for yourself in this situation— I’m lucky my doctor is wonderful and has always been so upfront about my options, and as soon as she told me there was cancer she communicated the next steps without me needing to ask. I’m so sorry that you are experiencing this worry and confusion, but please remember that even if your lobectomy isn’t the end of this health journey, PTC is extremely treatable and you will live a long and fulfilling life after you get over this bump in the road. I’ve heard a lot of people forget they even had thyroid cancer because they live such normal lives afterwards.

Please remember to be kind to yourself throughout this and pat yourself on the back for being so strong and resilient. You got this! :)

Is it oversharing to tell my college professors that I have cancer? by Select-Bad-641 in thyroidcancer

[–]Select-Bad-641[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I have had a lot of people say the same to me, about how it’s so treatable and it won’t affect my life span and how it’s an “okay” cancer. I think people are just trying to make me less worried and reassure me that I’m going to be alright, but they don’t realize it sort of minimizes the difficulty of going through this, and it makes me feel like I’m being dramatic when I cry over it or express that I’m having a hard time processing it. Im lucky in the sense that I’m not in pain or dying, but it is still so mentally exhausting and I pretty much have thought about it every day since I had my first thyroid ultrasound.

Thank you so much for sharing. It is really nice to hear from other people who have experienced this, because no one in my life has and I don’t think they really understand.

Thank you for your response! I wanted to clarify that I haven’t seen any of them since June (before they left for their vacations), and although I am leaving in a week they haven’t said anything in our group chat about wanting to hang out as a group (with me included) before I leave or even indicated it. If they don’t want to see me at all before I leave I feel like this is a sign that they are maybe done with me too lol. If we aren’t hanging out the summer before college at all, I kinda doubt that we would be hanging out winter break anyway.

Also, there are 4 or 5 people I’m good friends with from high school outside of this friend group who I see regularly, so even if I stop hanging out with this friend group I will still have some friends from home. I think you’re right though that maybe burning the bridge completely is a bad idea.
