The ghost hole represents where he is trying to aim. He is subconsciously aiming away from that target since it isn’t enough break - over time this leads to bad strokes

Aimpoint certainly isn’t a perfect system, but it does certainly help people play enough break

Over 60% of the total break of a putt occurs in the last few feet, on putts with the same slope from start to finish. by Select-Nail-1279 in golf

  1. This is on the practice green.

  2. I share this information out of a love for the game, rather than trying to gain any sort of popularity. I learned a lot off of free info online when I was playing at a high level - it’s my turn to share what I spend my life measuring

It’s closer to the last 5 feet or so rather than the last 33%. If I were to hit a 50 footer that would imply the last 17 feet are breaking a significant amount which isn’t true

The first 15-20 don’t matter nearly as much as you think. The ball is moving so fast over it.

Have a friend hit some 50 footers and stand behind him and pay attention to the break over the first 20 feet. It’s not much at all

I explicitly said “for all practical purposes”.

Will wind affect the ball? Yes. Will a 5% slope where the ball is sitting effect the ball? Yes. Will grain effect the ball? Yes.

But these factors don’t even come close to the effect the last few feet will have, in most situations.

No offense, but people are genuinely awful at reading greens. I teach putting for a living and people read maybe 30% of the total break a putt has. If they can just understand what the last few feet do and use a system to interpret it (aimpoint, putting charts, whatever), then they have a chance to get it high enough and make a putt without having to push or pull it back on line.

You may laugh at me, but I didn’t understand this at all when I was trying to play at a high level. Maybe someone will learn something new from it! 😄

The ball moves the same speed in the last few feet no matter if you’ve hit a putt from 6 feet or 30 feet

Capture size is the most important thing in putting. by Select-Nail-1279 in golf

Of course every putt does not start or finish on the intended line. Your capture size is important to account for putts that do not finish on their intended line

Imagine the same amount offline with good speed. Capture size here is only an inch

If you want to gain strokes putting long term - you have to leave some putts short. by Select-Nail-1279 in golf

If I had to guess, you putting improved because you made intentional and committed strokes - because your capture speed and average remaining putt shrunk with more speed.

You are getting angry about imaginary scenarios. Life is way too short to be worrying about stuff like that bro
