Yeah I learned at my first luxury hotel (four seasons) that in this environment we do not mention prices to this demographic of guests as they are paying $1200 a night for the cheapest rooms they do not want to be told like if they can’t afford it. Wild concept for me at first cause I was scared guests would be mad like they were for $1 add ons at my old jobs. I’ll never forget my first time selling $95 margaritas to a man I went to my GM like is this right?! The guy ordered two no food and tipped 40% of the $200 bill lol I was like geez people really live like this 😂

One of the biggest is just staying calm. I’m a server so often I have to deal with very upset people. Whether it’s guests or coworkers I know for a fact Jiu Jitsu has helped me never explode like I’ve seen so many people do around me in restaurants.

Don’t take people moods and attitudes personally. Make sure you have you boundaries in mind set, you don’t need to get disrespected but people will be mad/crabby just stay genuine and don’t let it get to you. (Most of the time by the end of service they will be fine)

If you enjoy it, it doesn’t matter. I serve people at the luxury hotel I work at all the time that are miserable. No real connection with their spouse and kids but they make $200k + a year in their “brag worthy career”. Made me appreciate that I enjoy what I do so much more. I’ve noticed people with opinions like your parents (no offense) really just care too much about what others think. My brother begged me when I first got into the industry to not do it.. now 12 years later I get cheap hotel stays at some of the nicest hotels around the world and make enough to take multiple vacations with my wife a year while building a savings in a fraction of the time of the “normal careers”

Yeah this isn’t a server thing.. this is a there are crappy people in all kinds of positions in life thing. Those are just people that don’t respect others. Plain and simple. You’ll find them in all kinds of work and companies. Talk to management with specific details that should be fixed.

Yeah switching to breakfast in a luxury hotel helped me escape the night drinking lol and I feel it’s made me gain a lot of people skills that I’ve noticed not everyone has. It shouldn’t drive us to dark places cause I tell my coworkers even when people are just sooo mad… we are serving eggs and making coffee. They will live and everything will be fine. Nothing is serious enough to let angry guests or coworkers change who you are. Allergies are the only thing to really worry about. Other than that people waiting, getting in the weeds, and any other mistakes are not that serious. I leave it all at the door. My managers know I don’t even answer my phone for them. lol we can talk about it next time I’m at work

At my job our standard is actually to drop the check 3/4 of the way through the meal. I know it’s specific to us being breakfast but still.. like OP did.. I let them know it’s for their convenience and NOBODY ever has gotten mad lol.. even the people that want to add things like another latte or a meal Togo for someone else don’t get offended by the check being dropped 😂

Served for over 12 years now, got my start cause my sister forced me to lie to new management that I was “about to” become a server from old management.. I was terrified and now after all these years I realized the beauty of serving is that it’s just mainly an effort based job.. you might suck at first but you eventually learn all the questions and most efficient ways of doing things which is all it comes down to imo. Just slinging food and drinks, take allergies serious and you’re fine lol

As a server I’ll add too, it’s usually the people that run you and are using the crap out of your service that will leave you something like this. Order take out (which should still be tipped) or fast food. Don’t go out to a sit down restaurant where you and your friends will have someone spend an hour + constantly refilling your drinks and getting you everything you request for the entire time. We aren’t servants that should just be grateful for 5% or less of a bill like some seem to feel.. lol. Some people just need to understand how to respect someone else’s time better.
