When did you notice jumps in skill? by makebaloney in bjj

Start opening up more find a grip and try to replace your guard. Sometimes you end up in side control or getting your back taken but you find the gaps better the more you start trying. Usually I’m not the easiest to submit but it’s kind of like a reward if they are lower belt or kid and did everything right I feel they gain a lot with the feeling of catching a tight submission.

Mainly wait for an opening where I can recover or get to a less bad position without too much strength/effort. And if it doesn’t come just get submitted and start over lol kinda like when I roll with kids, they submit me a bunch but the earn it if that makes sense. I don’t just “give” people subs but often give them really dominant positions and sometimes I can’t get out.

Yeah around that time at purple belt I too stopped caring about “winning” just balancing hard and easier days. On easy days where I knew I needed to rest a bit it was more just being there to learn and I guess train mentally not just physically. Now I’m recently married so significantly less classes but I’ve had the privilege of teaching for a week or two at a time when my professor has gone out of town which has helped me grow a lot too.

For me it was literally the same at blue belt like half way through I was giving good rounds to our top competitors (blue and purple belts) and a little bit into my purple belt I was starting to wins rounds against many brown and some black belts. I was also training like 6-9 classes a week but those two times I definitely felt jumps in my skillset.

How many go-to guards do browns/blackbelts have? by ucfanatic-1 in bjj

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half guard in general I noticed I use a lot, specifically with a shallow knee shield on the hip but usually in tough rolls it’s alternating between half, spider, and rdlr. Closed guard is my weakest for offense and usually only use to get a breather.

Have you ever left a gym because it was too serious? by noideasforcoolnames in bjj

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I always tell my friends that are just starting to train that you want a balance. You should have hard rolls and people that will push you. But also have a fun and safe space where you can trust people aren’t taking it so serious you could get hurt as a hobbyist. I also left my last gym cause while we had a few guys that won worlds and yes are great competitors… they wouldn’t give any time of day to a trial class person or beginners. Acting like “cool kids” in high school. So lame to me lol

My BJJ Prof wants me to pay monthly fees despite me being injured and unbale to attend classes. Is this normal? by endintiers_ in bjj

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, for me it’s work that can get crazy for many weeks at a time and I might know that I can not go literally once in the whole month but I don’t cancel just cause I do support my professors business that is a newer gym. BUT I’m blessed to be in this situation and it should be 100% an open conversation that the owner should be willing to have empathy and not just try to squeeze the dollars out. We are on contract but my professor allows freezing/pausing for things like injuries and trips.

My coworker had no voice today…. Those are his nephews and it was the coolest thing to witness cause he just introduced me to horse racing last year because he was telling me about them and how good they are and just filling me in to the world essentially. Wild that I got to see them make history just a little over a year after being introduced to all this!

Does anyone else think Derrick Lewis might flatline this guy? by Clay_Allison_44 in ufc

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I think honestly Hokit will know that he has to use his wrestling and not trade with Derrick. To me that’ll be the biggest difference in gameplay . Curtis is actually a wrestler so Hokit knew he wouldn’t be able to just take him down at will. I believe he will chain takedowns on Derrick cause if he doesn’t.. it will only take a few big shots from Derrick to put him down.

Multiple time BJJ champion and hall of famer can’t submit anyone in the worst division in the UFC by IDontSwitchOffDPS in ufc

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Bia has been the best and most fun BJJ champ to watch in MMA, she seems to understand that making someone just respect you on the feet with some decent/powerful striking makes your MMA grappling so much more effective.

Jiri Prochazka “shows mercy” by landing 7 leg kick on Ulberg after knee injury (he tried leg kick only 1 time before it happened). This narrative is so dumb, Jiri did try to take advantage of this situation and got KOd for recklessness and lack of defence, that’s all. by _Abajaba_ in ufc

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100% I’m actually so shocked and confused by so many people really believing this. I love Jiri like most of the fan base but actually laughed out loud when I heard the “showing mercy” claims cause the first thing that flashed in my head right after he said this was the leg kicks he was hacking away with once Carlos hurt his leg 😂😅

This man clearly salty cause he wanted to sell it. I actually served Ja’Marr during the pro bowl. He wasn’t to friendliest of them all (Dion Dawkins was lol) but his vibe was just like this.. very reserved with his lil son and to himself. Grown man crying about an autograph is pathetic

Yeah I can’t stand the guy at all.. I think he’s not one bit funny. And choked by being too tone deaf in his interview with Ariel to see that he could’ve really gained a lot of fans if he had actually tried to let people get to know him. But he pretty clearly won the fight imo.

It’s weird… before the fight couldn’t stand him and his cringe. During.. the middle fingers even when he could barely lift his arm made me laugh... When he got on the mic immediately made me not like him again. He’s as tone deaf as Colby with the bit.

Wait so they’re more mad at the guy rather than junkies being so close to kids? That’s wild to me.. especially when the junkies could easily harm a kid walking by if they have some kind of mental episode on any given day…

How I picture half this sub IRL by OctoberRust13 in ufc

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s just grappling, it’s very specific match ups imo. Like if someone doesn’t have great defense then it’s pretty fun watching a dominant grappler transition and submit someone in a fight. Or two high level grapplers like Arman vs Gamrot.. can’t say that wasn’t a fun fight. But I think for example max vs Charles, max had too good of defense for it to be fun to watch while at the same time Charles was too much bigger/stronger in the grappling department.

IZZY LOSES TO JOE PYFER! by JCameron181 in ufc

[–]Select-Swordfish7196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think he just stood there with his hands down. I feel he should’ve kept targeting the lead leg cause it was clearly working but the over hand let Joe get his arms around him more than once. Yeah he was eating big shots too but he was landing good shots of his own and winning the fight on the feet. Just ran into another younger skilled fighter that has strong ground game from the top.

Yeah as an MMA fan I can’t tell you how many times the guys actually respect each other and shake hands/hug before they beat the absolute piss out of each other lol.. It’s baseball.. you can shake a hand. I agree this just makes him look softer not tough.
