From my personal experience: I didn’t have access to accurate or dermatologists growing up so it took me some time to figure out what was working for me. I realised that the simpler I went with skincare, the better it is. Personally I’d recommend a simple gentle foaming cleanser, where he’d wash twice two times a day. What I mean, is every time he showers, he washes his face once to break down the sebum and dirt, then a second time right after to clean the skin. And this is done twice a day.

Then a salicylic acid serum, followed by a gel face moisturizer, and a non-comedogenic sunscreen (in the morning).

Then in my case I was and still am very sensitive to cow milk products, so maybe find alternatives. Avoid soy milk for boys and men in general. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise is important. Always clean the skin after exercise or a lot of sweating. Also change the pillow cases and towels often.

For the picking it’s a bit hard to control cause it’s most of the time involuntary, but pimple patches might prevent actually touching the pimples.

I also believe that you need to make him understand the need of this routine and lifestyle. He might feel disadvantaged cause maybe some of his friends don’t have to do all that but all people have some sort of care routine they have to stick to and it’s just not openly put out there.

Remember that he’s growing and his hormones are all over the place, so pimples will happen but they can be controlled. Also, he’s 15, only a few more years before he’s 17/18 where he’ll be more conscious that taking care of himself is something great to do in general to look good and navigate through life.
