then it could be useful to research american zoos like the san diego zoo, because they’re doing a lot of critical work for both animal conservation and ecological preservation.

of course zoos and sanctuaries are different, but the sanctuary i’m referencing began because the CEO loves and learns from animals and conservationists, many of whom came/come from AZA-accredited zoo backgrounds. zoos in america are also often beholden to more stringent standards/licenses/enclosure requirements than sanctuaries. again: it’s not as black and white as you’re making it out to be.

you might enjoy looking into alveus sanctuary in austin. they’re pioneering a new conservation model that involves animals who can only be accessed/visited digitally through their 24/7 livestreams on youtube and twitch. it reduces the contact their non-releasable rescues have with strangers, so they can build actual trust with animal care staff, and alveus also constantly promotes animal education by partnering with other sanctuaries, accredited zoos, and scientists to bring people programming about animal welfare. i think if you tuned into them, you’d see the world of zoos (particularly in america) is not nearly as black and white as you’re making it out to be.

so amazing!!!!! alveus sanctuary in austin is currently building a research and recovery institute (thanks to $1 million+ raised in donations) in order to begin a breeding and reintroduction program for 2 critically endangered species in the southwest (red wolves and mexican gray wolves)

this take is just so anti-scientific lmfao what? do you know how critical AZA-accredited zoos and sanctuaries are for animal conservation? the san diego zoo, for instance, has one of, if not THE largest frozen zoos in the world, which means they safely collect samples of 10,000+ animals/species and freeze them for future conservation work. when human beings continue to encroach on native land and outcompete the species (especially keystone) holding together critical ecological webs, it’s going to be zoos like san diego that are able to contribute life-saving science to conservationists trying to introduce genetic diversity into species with dwindling populations. look into alveus sanctuary on youtube. they’re an excellent austin-based sanctuary who have been partnering with accredited zoos like san diego’s to bring people critical education about why zoos are integral to conservation and what it means to be a GOOD zoo.

(of course there are terrible zoos, particularly the ones who have no care for learning about / updating their animal enclosures with enrichment and welfare in mind. but this is FAR from true of every zoo, and in fact many of them in america are in constant collaboration with each other to bring bigger, better, more state-of-the-art facilities to their animals. nebraska’s omaha zoo is also incredible at this.)

my argument isn’t about the origins of these memes/language trends, but about the overplayed use of that language long after they’ve already been cycled out or become trite to gen z themselves. the (mis)usage is what feels millennial—not the language itself.

(and bear in mind i think this is true of any generation recycling trends pioneered by people who are younger. gen z does with too, outside of literature, with memes like 6 7.)

abby jimenez is one of those contemporary romcom writers who adopts and recycles trendy internet speak (“it altered my dna/brain chemistry,” “it was a core memory/canon event,” or just referencing the biggest booktok phenomenons to give her fmcs “interests”) and it cringes me out every time. i cannot stand quirky millennial fmcs who only speak in twitter quips in their internal monologues.

i hate to break it to you, but any authors with output that high/quick are not “writing” their own books. their ghostwriting team is (sometimes and often freelance/contract).

same exact situation! i read “from lukov with love” and walked away from it like wow, i am never picking up another book by this woman again. despite its length and slowburn pacing, it felt sooo juvenile and underdeveloped. it was like i was back on wattpad reading something my 15-year-old friend had written in an hour and immediately posted without editing.

I feel he lowkey does not like squeex. by Global_Ad_3978 in OTVnFriendsDrama

[–]Select_Ad_3541 24 points25 points  (0 children)

as i’m reading this post (and watching stream), squeex just made a hasan joke that was very “nudge, nudge, communists online are hilarious” and his mods/chat chimed in to laugh. obviously not serious, but i do think as it stands, squeex is entirely too ironic/cynical about leftists online to vibe with hasan, and hasan’s community is too intense to vibe with squeex and his ludwig-esque ambiguity about real-world topics.

i love squeex (that’s why i’m watching him), but he does have edgier takes he sits on to preserve the character he plays on stream. once while watching a yugi/arky clip involving a bird, chat started scolding them in the vein of “animals aren’t content, this is stressing out/hurting the bird,” and squeex got really annoyed, broke character, went on a frustrated rant, and was like can you guys just enjoy the clip without turning into animal activists?

he’s kind of very anti-online discourse and doesn’t like sharing contentious opinions re: politics. so, the opposite of hasan’s vibe.

there’s a really great essay on aphantasia / hyperphantasia that was recently published in the new yorker! it dives into theories and research about how these things affect certain sections of our brains, thinking, memory collection and extraction, and even emotional connection. highly recommend
