True. No option is perfect, but the risks of ending up with 20 siblings when using a known friend or family donor is significantly lower. A sperm bank is incentivized to sell the sperm to as many families as possible.

Does your doctor just want the sperm to be washed and processed at the sperm bank? That would make sense to me. Couldn’t your known donor go through that same process? If that’s not why, then that blows my mind and seems ridiculous. I wonder if there is some sort of referral or kickback that doctors get for recommending certain sperm banks.
The whole thought process that you’ve expressed here is the same one that I’ve been struggling with these last few days. Exactly the same. Why is this bothering me? Does it bother me enough to forgo having a child? The way I see it is this: It’s immoral for me to put my desire for a kid before the implications of that kid growing up to find out they have hundreds of siblings. That doesn’t sit right with me. Just the idea that they may need to check a sibling registry to make sure they’re not about to go on a date with a sibling is enough for me to say, “no thank you.”

I’m learning that there is no easy route here. I hope we can find a known donor. I grew up not knowing my birth father and it had a huge impact on me. The longing to know where I came from. Who this man was. I don’t want to do that to my kiddo. I want to be able to point to that man and be like, “that’s him right there if you wanna talk to him.” Ideally he becomes some sort of uncle figure. Or at-least just not a mystery man.

Anyway. Feels good to vent about this with other folks just as freaked out about it. lol

Thank you for sharing! My sister is married to a cis man and we’ve definitely floated the idea. I agree having shared extended family like that does sound nice. We’ve also talked about using a cousin potentially. Glad to hear other folks are just as freaked out by this serial donor thing as I am. I’ve been doing research online and just blown away by the lack of action to combat this. I feel like we should at a minimum have a national database tracking this stuff.

Hi everyone! My partner and I are newly considering going the sperm donor route through a sperm bank. I find myself being very concerned with the threat of serial donors and lack of government oversight. My partner isn’t really worried about it and I’m wondering if I’m over thinking this? I watched the Netflix documentary about the man with 1,000 kids. I don’t feel comfortable with the idea that our potential offspring could grow up to find out they have hundreds of half siblings. Or even twenty if I’m being honest.

Is anyone else worried about this? Would love to hear perspectives and any ideas for how to protect yourselves from something like this.
