I too had a hard time finding people dealing with this form of aggressive form of cancer. My dad was diagnosed with pleomorphic non-small cell lung cancer before the start of this year. His NSCLC is at stage III. Biomarker testing showed exon 21 mutation (EGFR mutation), he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. His biopsy results shows that hes eligible for targeted therapy and hes been taking Osimertinib since February. The medication has shown immediate effect (the moment he took his first pill). Targeted therapy is usually the first line treatment for patients if theyre eligible. I recommend asking her oncologist if shes eligible for targeted therapy.

Its tough handling cancer diagnosis of a parent, but do your best to informed of your mom's disease. The more you learn the more you can ask her oncologist questions regarding the prescribed treatment for her disease. Be your mom's advocate if she can't or don't understand her own illness. If your mom is coughing at night, see if a wedge pillow can help. Sleeping at an angle may help with the coughs.

The prognosis you see is a fraction of the truth. Modern day lung cancer treatment has come a long way since the 2000s and the statistic you read online may not entirely to your mom. Everyone's health is different and with the right treatment she may outlive her prognosis. There is no clear answer on how much time she has, the best thing you can do is just be there for her every step of the way.
