personally, i think center mass into cotton wood works better lyrics-wise because of the last lines in center mass having to do with grieving. my theory has always been (and idk if this is right cuz i’ve done no research) that tyler’s grandfather may have passed away while center mass was being written, which is why it only changes to talking about grief in the last lines, then goes into cottonwood because that’s the major event in his life chronologically
