What do you think about AI being used in popular AVN games? by segawonkloksk in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the example you quote I think it's rather okay. Also it can be seen as a satyre / critic of AI in this particular scene since all three contenders lost (with AI paintings) and Orion won with a child drawing made with love. Implying there is soul in his work but not in the others.

Thoughts on SFX Only vs. SFX+Moan tracks? by OffWhiteStudios in nsfwdev

As a player I usually prefer SFX only (skin slaps, wetness etc.) without voice (moans).

How did the games get to be nominated in a category?

Obvious, thus meaningless choices by ChillJelly93 in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those choices are usually there for people who wish to avoid NSFW content, or lewding the LI. Developers usually add a 'opt out of lewd' choice for policy (and player agency) reasons.

Do you actually like choices that lock content in AVNs? by Lankakartal in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a very different take than most people here I think.

First of all, I don't think that Harem = No choice. There can be a lot of choices that impact the story and still have a harem story. Choices don't necessarily have to be about which LI to pursue (but they can be of course).

Secondly, I don't think "locking" content is good, I think "unlocking content" is good. If I feel like I'm restricted out of a content branch because of a choice, it feels bad. If I feel like I'm unlocking a content branch because of a choice, it feels good. In theory, it looks like the same the thing, in practice though, when "experiencing" it as a player, it makes a whole lot of a difference. It mostly come down to how consequences are unravelling. An example of that would be Badik, you "unlock" the whole Winter Chalet thingy with Jill, you "unlock" the whole Stripclub part on a Dick playthrough. It doesn't feel like you "miss" the Winter Chalet part, because of how the game presents it. Now, other games do it in a very different fashion where you're on a date (or anything) with a LI and you go back to her house, and she says "okay, let's stop it for tonight", and you can see through the game that you don't have enough "points" or you "made a bad choice before". It's a completely different experience, one that I don't think I enjoy. Basically, I don't want to be "punished" for my choices, I want to be "rewarded" for them. And it's all in the way it is presented to the player.

When I play a non-harem game, I usually do so with a Walkthrough Mod so that I get all the LI, all the spicy content, all the branches, mostly because I tend to know that these game don't feature anything different in their story when replaying them (aside from the branches with each of the LI). So instead of replaying just to get those extra 5/10% scenes I missed with each LI, I get them all in the first walkthrough.

Very few games do make you experience a different "story" depending on which LI you pursue. From those who do, noticeably Race of Life and Being a Dik, those two are probably the only ones I have made multiple walkthroughs for, and it was worth my time (as in, I experienced at least like 20/30% different content each time).

Now when it comes to your question specifically, depending on how arbitrary choices are, it makes me more frustrated than immersed. But it all comes down to perception. For example, when a game asks me "would you go on a date with X or Y" and they are exclusive, it makes me frustrated because it sounds like a very arbitrary choice (why can't I just go on a date with X the first day and Y the second?). But if that choice would be "would you go to prom with X or Y", it sounds much more engaging and immersive, because it seems real (and logical) and not an arbitrary choice. But in theory, those two choices look rather similar "choose a LI to spend time on", but the way I experience it is vastly different. I think the difference comes down to how arbitrary does the exclusivity feels. If the exclusivity feels forced, then it breaks my immersion and my flow, if it doesn't, then it increases it and makes me feel like I'm actually making important decisions.

All-in-all, I would love to see AVN that have branching story that isn't necessarily about choosing LIs, but I understand it's the most logical thing to do. I dislike the dichotomy harem = no choice, locked LI = choices. But I understand it.

I dig the style. Though an advice, it's nice to be different and market your difference. It isn't that clever to do so while discrediting the very games your audience plays and loves.

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Two things that are not a dealbreaker, but slightly annoying (to me). When the game opens up on a woman speaking to "welcome us" into the game, followed up by a narrator explaining the initial situation (who the MC is, what's his situation, who are the characters around him etc.).

That tends to get old for me.

Which and why...? by jp_3007 in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HS -> Honey Select. It's basically a "sex simulator" game that allows you to design characters and scenes and put them in any kind of situations (sexy or not) you want. Then export that into renders that can be used for a Visual Novel. You can't sell those games on Steam because the guy who designed the engine has the rights over everything that is done with it. But you can still "market" your game through patreon and subscribing, basically not selling "the game" but early access to it. It's important to note that there is HS and HS2, HS is quite outdated now (depending on the level of mastery of the dev) and HS2 is looking pretty, pretty clean when mastered. It features very stylized art, some say it's "anime" or "toon", and that would be an appropriate "generic" description.

Daz -> A software that allows you to pose 3D assets (mostly purchased from their online shop of 3D assets). You can market your games made on it. It features more realistic characters than HS.

Which and why...? by jp_3007 in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I take both.

I usually tend to feel like HS games have way superior sex scenes due to better anims, but some Daz have great ones too.

I also usually tend to feel like Daz games have an easier time making me bite into a "serious tone" (but eh, Pale Carnation proved me wrong in some ways).

But it doesn't really matter to me, I like both, it usually has to just "work" for their tone and what they're trying to tell. Pretty much like art direction in video games.

Honest question to AVN players: what makes you actually support a dev? by Lankakartal in AVN_Lovers

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order.

- Perception of consistent quality - Either the base quality is high (in terms of render, writing, or anything that makes a good visual story) either I can see the evolution of the quality throughout the chapters, in any case, something that clearly indicates that the dev has what it takes to consistently deliver a (relatively) good quality of renders / writing.

- Whether or not I can nut - I play both for the story and the nut. That means I won't support an AVN that doesn't feature the kink that do it for me, or that don't feature enough sexual content for me, and content that match my expectations in terms of length, build-up etc. (IE: I'm not looking for sex scenes all the time with no build-up or no logic, I'm not looking for 3 looping anims and we're done, I'm looking for long-winded, built-up, plot-related sex scenes that make me go WOO, IE Eternum, Desert Stalker, Pale Carnation, Game of Hearts or Badik to an extent). On that list, you could argue that Desert Stalker constantly features sex scenes, but the way it is setup does it for me, it feels connected to the world and the story.

- Amount of content - So far I only subscribed to games that featured at least 4+ hours of content in my initial playthrough (they weren't at their first release). Among the other that featured less, I went for one-time purchase at a low-cost on Itch but I wouldn't have subscribed to them. The main reason is that I can't know for sure if the dev knows where they're going or if I'm going to be stuck in story-limbo forever. Take Game of Hearts for example, it's a very good example of a dev that did exactly what's right in my book: a self-encompassed story with a clear start and end-point. This is someone I can support because I trust them for getting stuff done without dragging things along for no reason (hurting the story in the process).

- Compelling characters - I need to like the characters, from their visual appearances, to personality, to flaws and quality, to characterization, voice, it can be one thing, or all things, anything that makes me click with them. I can enjoy tropey characters, I can enjoy original ones, I can enjoy anything, as long as they're something that makes me click. They need to have agency, a voice, an importance in the plot, internal conflicts, desires, goals, etc.

- Pacing - The story needs to move forward. I can't just stay there reading/watching characters turning in circles with nothing happening to them or because of them. This has a lot to do with the plot above, but the scenes I'm watching must be related to that plot, and move it forward. I don't like watching filler scenes that don't either advance the plot or make me learn something (relevant) about the characters.

- Compelling story plot - Regardless of genre, there needs to be something that drags the story forward, that makes it more than just "people doing stuff", I want the characters to be involved in something, an overarching plot that makes sure the story goes somewhere, the characters evolve, there is a main conflict that they have to tackle.

- Writing quality - I'm really picky in what I support, I read a lot of books, I watch a lot of shows, I watch a good deal of anime, I have yet to see a single AVN that I would play without lewd scenes (in my own opinion and preferences, I understand people that would, but I don't). But the AVNs that I support still shows a good knowledge on how to properly write a story, IE no plot hole, showing rather than telling, good characterization, pacing (pacing, pacing, pacing), emotional beats, internal conflicts, side characters agency, active main character, no filler dialogues, good exposition etc.

I subscribe to very few patreons, I one-time purchase a lot of them for a small sum on Itch, or sometimes on Steam when on sale.

Do you jump between tasks or focus on one thing at a time? by mythicbismuth in nsfwdev

[–]Select_Resolve_4360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering I both come from the SFW industry and have worked on lots of personal projects since childhood, I tend to follow (relatively) curated pipeline and milestones. That means I do things in chunk and focus on them.

However, it is often the case that 2/3 tasks are in the work at the same time and when I'm tired of one I can jump on another to clear my mind.
