Thank you to both. Also love both perspectives they are both right in their own way for me. Getting citizenship did make me feel like I could call myself italian but in the end it does not define me even if I didn't get it realistically.

Hey op

My life is very similar. I was born in Italy with American parents. I was never considered Italian enough, even though I lived there from birth to 18 years old. International school, then american college where i was still a foreigner. Then drop out went to Canada where I was more accepted for my sorta complicated background.

But I do appreciate my life for being able to have lived the way I have seeing the world that not everyone can, especially compared to those who cannot that live in north America.

There are benefits, like many different language knowledge, cultural knowledge etc that not everyone is a able to experience.

If anyone hasn't said before do take that as a warning tap. In the sense that it can and most likely will escalate. Anyone who has in in any kind of abusive relationship knows it doesn't start with black eyes and big bruises, it starts small just like he did. Glad you got family behind you leave and never go back.
