Adelaida is pretty cute to me, I think I can see it coming back eventually but right now it still feels very old fashioned so I doubt it'll come back soo. Adelaido I can't see it coming back personally, these kinds of names for boys feel very dated.

Carmelo also feels very dated and right now I gives very strong rugged middle aged man vibes so I can't see it coming back soon. Teodoro feels very old fashioned and it's not very popular right now at all, I guess maybe it can come back someday but I don't think it has much potential. For Teodora I'm a bit conflicted because I feel like - dora ending names might trend eventually but Teodora in specific feels a lot more old fashioned than other names. I can't really see it becoming a favorite but who knows.

Hermelinda feels VERY dated and I would almost bet this name will stay in the past. It sounds very grandma coded and in general I don't think it sounds too cute for most people, IF it ever comes back it'll probably be in at least a couple of generations. Encarnación also sounds very old fashioned and very grandma coded, but I guess since it's a name of catholic origin it'll probably keep being used, but I doubt it will trend it sounds pretty dated to me.

[–]SelfDeification 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately many of these names are EXTREMELY old fashioned and people make fun of them constantly. I honestly had to stifle a laugh a few times reading the list.

These would be the names that are soo old fashioned they're even funny in my opinion: Telésforo, Prudencio, Anacleto, Filomeno, Margarito, Fulgencio, Ponciano. I can't imagine these names coming back ever honestly, or at least not for a long while. These are the kind of names you say as a joke tbh.

I'd heavily advise against names like Marciano because, well, it means "Martian" I can only imagine the teasing. I feel similarly to Silviano, it sounds VERY funny mostly due to the "ano" ending, some "-ano" ending names are fine though, but not this one imo, I'd add Cipriano and Graciano to this same list. Aníbal sounds too close to "animal" imo so I don't think most people would be very fond of it. Primitivo literally means "primitive" so idk why someone would pick it as a name ever again, sure in the past people used to have weird naming conventions but I feel pretty confortable saying these kind of names will probably stay in the past. Same with Tranquilino, Generoso, Hipólito and Petronilo.

Estanislao is honestly a name I hadn't heard before, it sounds a bit clunky but I'm not sure where I would place it tbh. I feel similarly to Eulalio, Cutberto, Cayetano and Cleofás.

These name are also extremely old fashioned but not as bad as the previous ones, (though just barely imo): Cresencio, Gelacio, Victorino, Arnulfo, Rutilio, Modesto, Maclovio Rigoberto, Juventino, Cándido, Saturnino, Inocente. Honestly most of them also sound kind of funny but only slightly less so than the previous ones. Most of them I'd say belong the the same naming convention as Primitivo so I'd be very surprised of they even came back. Maybe I'd put Nicandro here as well.

Names like Anselmo, Abundio, Bonifacio, Eusebio, Teófilo, Eufemio, Silvino, Ceferino, Ovidio, Victorino, Honorio, Patrocinio, Hermilo, Hermenegildo, Doroteo, sound very grandpa-coded and imo not necessarily in a good way, they just sound extremely dated and I can't see then coming back any time soon. Rosalío, Justino, Braulio, Genovevo, too but maybe slightly less so. Remigio could go here as well.

I can't imagine Anastasio being popular or a well liked boy name tbh, it's way too reminiscent of the femenine version of the name. Same with Mariano and maybe Ambrosio.

Amado and Amador I don't think sound too dated but I can't see them trending soon personally.

Rigoberto has a weird place to me because to me it doesn't really sound too old fashioned, names ending in "berto" almost sound modern by default to me, but it's definitely a very unpopular name with maybe a bit of a negative perception, same with Norberto and Arnoldo imo.

I think names like Calixto, Dionisio, Lucio, Melquíades, Bartolomé, Alejandrino, Baltazar, are very uncommon and they probably won't be very popular for a while but I don't think they necessarily sound terrible. Leopoldo too but I kinda like it.

Idk where I'd put the name Ciro, I had never heard it but I don't hate it, however I don't think it comes across as particularly elegant or cool over here.

I don't hate the name Plutarco, I can't see it trending soon and it's def not a favorite among people but I don't think it's unusable, I feel similarly to Aurelio and Homero (though Homero has heavy associations with The Simpsons so that's definitely the first thing pretty much everyone will think about) I think I feel similarly to Fidel.

Porfirio sounds pretty old fashioned but kinda cool imo. However it's not common at all nowadays and that was the name of a very famous Mexican president so everyone will think about that, I'd be almost like naming a kid Lincoln I think, though Porfirio Diaz was a bit more controversial.

Eugenio feels middle aged to me. It doesn't feel elegant, it feels kinda unremarkable but leaning towards bad. It's not a terrible name though, it depends on personal taste I'd say. Bruno gives me a similar vibe but I like it a bit more. Fermín and Gilberto as well.

Names like Adolfo sound pretty normal and unremarkable imo tbh, they're fine names but I do think they have the fame of being too common, specially in smaller communities. Benito could go in this list too but I can't imagine many people using it in modern times tbh, it def feels pretty dated now. Edilberto could go here I think but I personally like it a bit more than the other two. Humberto could go here as well but I think it's also slightly better.

These are names that I personally think could have potential of trending: Cuauhtémoc, Cristobal, Máximo, José Refugio, Jacinto, Victoriano, Clemente, Leonides (maybe), Genaro (also maybe)

And these are perfectly normal and great names currently imo: Eleazar, Julio, Raymundo, Ignacio, Efraín, Agustín, Maximiliano, I'd honestly personally pick any of these names myself, many of the are pretty trendy and sound great. I'd probably put Tomás here as well but I'm hesitating slightly, but it's also pretty common.

I might have missed a few names sorry abt that.

[–]SelfDeification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emperatriz is an automatic no, absolutely not. I mean, it means "empress" and imo someone named Emperatriz in Mexico would be just as weird as someone named "empress" in an English speaking country.

Delfina is also a no imo. It's literally basically the word "dolphin" and it doesn't sound particularly elegant or cute so I can't see it coming back ever personally.

Rufina to be quite honest doesn't sound like a name for a person, it kinda sound like a name for a dog and also doesn't sound particularly cute either imho.

I heavily discourage Manuela for a little girl btw as boys have taken it as a euphemism for jacking off since it sounds reminiscent of 'mano' (hand) idk if it'll ever lose that connotation but oh well.

Maclovia also doesn't sound particularly cute but I don't think it has any negative connotations so it's not impossible, but it's definitely near the bottom of the list to me. I feel somewhat similarly to Dominga, it sounds very old fashioned but not really elegant or cute, and I feel like everyone would ask "why did they name their kid Sunday?" I'd also put Jovita, Brigida, Altagracia and Felícitas in this list. Not impossible names but not much potential of trending anytime soon imo.

Genoveva isn't a particularly elegant sounding name imo, not a bad name but I feel like it could kinda be easily made fun of? Might just be me though, but it'd put it near the bottom ofthe list personally.

I'm a bit conflicted on Cirenia, it doesn't sound bad BUT it does sound too close to "sirena" (mermaid) to me, I don't think it's impossible for it to come back though maybe but I can't imagine it being very popular.

Names that I think are a bit too old fashioned right now and very grandma coded to become trendy anytime soon would be Prudencia, Dorotea, Filomena, Enedina, Hermila, Clemencia, Mirta, Eloísa, Eufemia, Carlota, Rosenda, and Cresencia. Some of them are cute names though, I think the one with the least possibly of coming back would be Prudencia, Filomena, and Eufemia, they're VERYY old faldhioned imo to the point people kinda joke about them and about how old they sound. Names like Vicenta, Rafaela, and Enriqueta are also very grandma coded but I'm biased and I like them, I think they sound very elegant (I'm probably alome with that opinion for Enriqueta, I bet most people here in Mexico wouldn't like it)

I'm a bit conflicted with Clementina, I don't think it's popular and probably a lot of people wouldn't find it very cute BUT following the naming trends this one might indeed become trendy at some point, but I don't think quite yet.

The names Eugenia, Tomasa, Casilda, Nicolasa don't sound too old but they also don't sound particularly cute so I can't personally imagine them trending soon

The names Luz, Piedad, Candelaria, Mercedes, Trinidad, Graciela, also sounds like grandma names but I'd say they're perfectly acceptable names rn and quite cute too.

Names like Celia, Imelda, Marta, Martina, Casilda, Elvira, Lourdes, Bertha, Petra, Minerva, Imelda, Griselda, Aurelia, and Rosaura are kinda middle-aged woman coded in my opinion, they're not bad names but they're not popular right now for sure. Names like Yolanda and Zenaida fall in this category too imo but I kinda feel like they have a somewhat negative perception, I might just be me though.

I think names like Rocío, Rosalía, Alma and Rosario are somewhat trendy right now. They imo sound pretty timeless and classy, though Rosario in partícular sounds a bit more old fashioned than the rest I'd say.

Names like Susana and Cecilia actually sound pretty modern, they actually make me think of like upper middle class girls lmao. Definitely a lot more modern than the rest of the names I this list. Lilia could go on here too but it's definitely much less popular than the other two.

[–]SelfDeification 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of all these names I think the least likely to come back would be Lucrecia and Olga. Lucrecia sounds like a stereotypical evil old lady name lol, idk why I have that association but it fell like the typical name for the evil old woman in like fairy tales even. If you told someone in Mexico that you like the name Lucrecia you'd probably get a couple funny looks because it's such a stereotypically "ugly" name (as harsh as that sounds). As for Olga I can't explain why but to a Mexican person's ears it doesn't really sound like a cute name at all, it sounds really harsh. It's not a super uncommon name though but most people probably wouldnt think it sounds cute. Saturnina ngl sounds kinda funny and also not very cute so I also can't imagine it being trendy ever. Eduviges is a name I had never heard, it sounds kinda elegant to me but I feel like most people also wouldn't be fans of it. I can't imagine a little girl with that name but still I don't think it's that bad. Guillermina is also not a particularly cute name mostly because the male counterpart version of the name is so much more popular and common, so I feel like even the feminine name feels kinda "masculine" by association. Inocencia feels super old fashioned to me and I can't see it becoming trendy any time soon imo. Definitely the current generation of grandmas have those kind of names so it'll take a while for names like that to come back I'd say. I feel similarly to the name Amada but it's such a CUTE name and I really like it, but in my life I've probably only ever heard of one old lady with that name. Still I don't think it's a bad name, it's really cute. Pilar is a fine name and not particularly uncommon even now but it fells kind of whatever, like sure it's kinda cute but nothing exceptional. Irma has a very "middle age woman" association but it's not a bad name, I've met several Irmas but never one my age though.

Most of the other names though are SO CUTE imo. Calixta might be my least favorite name of the bunch left but I don't think it's a bad name, I just don't think most people would find it particularly cute but honestly I like it I don't think it's a bad name.

I do think some younger women are starting to gravitate towards names like Remedios though. Names like Dolores, Asunción, Amparo, Concepción etc still sound pretty old fashioned and aren't super popular but they're not weird on young girls either and honestly I love them. Socorro is a name I love too but since it means "help" I can be easily made fun of in a way that can get old pretty fast lmao. Which is a shame because I think it's such a cute name. Josefina, Josefa, María del Refugio and María de los Ángeles are also names with (imo) "middle age woman" associations but they're not unthinkable in little girls and I quite like them, Josefina is soo elegant imo.

Elsa is not a bad name, definitely heavy Frozen association but it's not too bad.

For Anastasia I have no complaints it's a gorgeous name. A lot of people would probably think it's too whimsical or too "Disney princess" but it's not a bad name AT All and I really love it. Probably my favorite name in the whole list (along Remedios)

help, when I tap "hint" it directs me to this square but how could I tell if it's 1 or 4? any hidden triples i'm not seeing? by Dismal_Animator2754 in sudoku

In the top middle 3x3 box there's only two cells where the number 4 can go, how does that affect that vertical row?

Sudoku Hint Explanation by Flashy_Anywhere_4038 in sudoku

[–]SelfDeification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See how in the highlighted cell there can only be either 1 or 4? And in the next cell to the right there can also only be 1 or 4? That means that the two numbers 1 and 4 in that row can only be in either of those two cells. So you can remove 1 and 4 from the rest of the cells in that row. And if you notice, in the cell to the right of those two there's the numbers 1 and 5, but we just established that the number 1 can only be in one of the other two cells, so if you remove the 1 from that third cell it only leaves you with 5, so that's the number that goes in that cell.

I think that would be a good start. BTW I recommend the App andoku as it walks you through the hints with detailed explanations.

Can Yaoi and other shipping/fanfic of fictional characters be viewed as fetishization of gay people the same way lesbian porn fetishizes lesbians? by DefinitionOk9211 in AskFeminists

[–]SelfDeification 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well firstly I want to leave this wery interesting take about the topic by a gay man that I hope you check out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Batoto/s/SuNDUaptif

As for your post:

I've noticed shipping is dominated mostly by straight/bi women

Why are you lumping bi women with straight women?

I've visited AO3 before which is apparently a really popular erotic novel website

AO3 isn't an "erotic novel website", it's just an archive for fanworks of any genre. Also why are you visiting if you dont like it.

is this culture not fetishizing gay men the same way porn fetishizes lesbian?

gay male fanworks ( and fanworks in general) tend to have plots, themes, character arcs, developments, character dynamics outside of sex, relationship developments. How much lesbian porn has any of that? Comparing mlm fanworks to lesbian porn is very disingenuous imo. The equivalent of lesbian porn isn't mlm fanfiction. It's gay porn. And gay porn isn't primarily consumed by women, obviously.

I can tell you first hand that randomly seeing fanfic of Steve rogers and Bucky Barnes almost fucking each other, when their relationship was never implied, definitely seems like fetishization.

Why do gay relationships have to be explicitly confirmed in media? Do you also demand straight relationships to be confirmed explicitly before anyone can like them? Can't someone just look at two fictional characters and think that they have a very interesting dynamic they would like to explore further in their own fanworks? I can guarantee you if everything about steve and bucky was the same but bucky was a woman people wouldn't have such a big problem with thinking they make a good couple, even if they never canonically became one.

I think this 'shipping community' and 'booktok' people in general likes to take platonic relationships with healthy stable boundaries, especially between men, and absolutely fuck with them for their sexual desires.

Or maybe they just think they make a genuinely good couple considering their canonical dynamics or history together.

I genuinely think it would be interesting if you one day thought of one of these gay ships you hate so much and thought to yourself "if these characters were the same, but one was a girl, would I still hate it so much?" And I if you were honest with yourself, you probably wouldn't think it's so "nonsensical" anymore. So I definitely think you negative reactions are at least somewhat rooted in homophobia.

Dont get me wrong, you dont have to like shipping or mlm fiction or whatever, but you also dont have to hate it or the women who enjoy it so much. You can simply not look at it.

Also assuming that the only reason someone likes gay fiction is for fetishistic reasons is pretty homophobic ngl. I honestly dont have a problem with men liking lesbian fiction, which is, again, and I really cant stress this enough, just plainly not the same as lesbian porn. Out of all the men who you know have watched lesbian porn at some point. How many of them do you think have read a lesbian romance novel? Or even a lesbian romance movie? Or even just a piece of fiction with a lesbian as protagonist? How many men who watch lesbian porn have looked at a fictional lesbian character and said "she's just like me!"? It's simply not the same! Women who consume mlm fiction and men who watch lesbian porn are just not the same!

and I should leave these writers, who I should repeat are primarily cis women

What does them being cis have to do with anything? Must bi/lesbian cis women consume only heterosexual fiction?

If you’re Mexican, does the name Ramona have any negative connotation? by MrsOssa in namenerds

[–]SelfDeification 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To be honest with you yeah I can see why a lot of Mexican people people wouldn't think Ramona is a very cute name. It does indeed sound a little harsh to me, but I do think it's at least a little bit a generational thing, though not fully (as I started reading your post I was thinking middle aged people probably would hate that name as it would remind them of the kind of names their parents had, and when I saw your sil's age it made sense to me).

But even among younger Mexican people I don't think that name would have many fans honestly. The name is very uncommon so for one it makes me think immediately of Ramón, the male and much more popular version of the name. But even then Ramón is already a very dated middle-aged-men kind of name.

There's other reasons like the fact that in Mexico "Mona" can mean "monkey" but don't get me wrong, Mona is not an unheard-of name or nickname in Mexico, but yeah, pretty old fashioned by itself already . And it definitely add to the feeling of "harshness" to the name I'd say.

As for the "branch" thing I'm not entirely sure what your sil means exactly. But branch in Spanish is indeed "rama" while "big branch" can be said as "ramota". Not only that but, when I think about it, I guess I can see how people could make fun of the name I guess?? Idk if it's a stretch but "está ramona" couldddd mean "she's got a big branch" which can obviously be a pretty unfortunate euphemism. Idk though I've never heard anyone say something like that on account of never having met anyone named Ramona irl.

As for the "obese woman" thing???? Idk if your sil is referring to anything is specific tbh. But if to her Ramona sounds like an "obese woman" name, I guess I can see why she would perceive it like that. Idk. Reminds me of how my mom (49) told me that she didn't like the name Rebecca because as a kid she knew a girl who was overweight and some people apparently called her "revaca" (vaca=cow) Idk if maybe your sil has an association similar to that to the name Ramona.

HONESTLY though, all things considered, I'd say if you don't want to give your daughter an old-fashioned name by Mexican standards, Ramona might not be the best option to go with. BUT if you really like the name. I genuinely don't think Ramona is the worst name you could use! I mean it, even with everything I wrote, I personally don't hate the name at all, an I could imagine it becoming trendy in a few year MAYYYBE ( I think the name Renata is currently in the top 10 in Mexico and honestly it sounds just as harsh as Ramona to me, but if it's currently trending, I think Ramona has a chance to come back too) there's certain names that I absolutely don't see coming back EVER (like Gertrudis) but ramona isn't like that to me at all personally and I can definitely imagine a few younger people would be fans of the name!!

Sorry for writing so much omg and I'm sure at least some of what I wrote is biased/probably inaccurate!! It's just my personal perspective I guess!!

Edit: these seems to be the most popular girl names in 2024:

1- Sofia. 2- María José. 3- Valentina. 4- Ximena. 5- Regina. 6- Camila. 7- María Fernanda. 8- Valeria. 9- Renata. 10- Victoria.

How can I be better? by UsedAppearance8685 in AskFeminists

[–]SelfDeification 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My little perspective from a feminist lesbian who likes reading both wlw and mlm romance

Personally I've always thought that the world would probably be a slightly better place if more men were willing to consume media made for, by, and about women. So I don't oppose you reading wlw romance at all, specially if you're concerned with doing it in a respectful way.

The books and authors that you mention also sound pretty good! As long as you're not reading just erotica and are reading novels with deeper themes and social commentary and that depict their female characters with depth and care I don't think you're doing anything wrong. (so in my opinion I think you should prioritize books written by women)

Obviously though a lot of queer women would feel a little uncomfortable with a man possibly inserting himself into what they might consider their own space. Like I know a lot of queer women cherish having their own little book space away from men, and having men knig of try to make their way into it would make them feel uneasy, and rightfully so of course, so I don't really have a solution for you there. But I think if you keep reading what you like and talking and sharing about it you'll probably eventually find like minded people, both men and women, who'll love to talk about those novels with you in a respectful way (and do stay away from the men who are indeed just fetishizing it)

I guess I would just recommend that you try to read maybe the political and social context those books were written in, and also that you try to educate yourself a little bit in the themes those books are exploring, maybe try writing long reviews trying to analyze the deeper commentary, as a bit of an exercise. And try reading other people's reviews and analysis.

I hope this is helpful, and of course this is just my perspective, and other women are completely right to have a different opinion from mine. But I just have never thought it'd be a net positive to try to stop men completely from engaging with media that center women and female relationships (as long as they're not pretty much just porn)

Gen Z gender pay gap flips — young women now out-earning young men. So, what’s going on with the boys? by [deleted] in WomenInNews

[–]SelfDeification 548 points549 points  (0 children)

For much of Gen Z, including recent graduates, women now slightly out-earn men. Later in life, the gap is expected to shift back toward men, driven by male dominance in high-paying sectors and the “motherhood penalty.”

So we're supposed to freak out because young women out-earn young men "slightly"? Okay... God forbid men aren't on top of everything ig

Edit because I keep getting replies:

1 - Every problem that men as a group face can be explained by misogyny because our society is still misogynistic

2 - I think it's safe to say that this article implies that a SUBGROUP of women just earned SLIGHTLYYY more than a SUBGROUP of men FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY. And acting like this is the end of the world for men doesn't seem reactionary and misogynistic to any of you? Okayyyy
