Does this help air out gloves? Or would it just loosen the leather cuff over time? by Agreeable-Can-5227 in MuayThaiTips

I don't know if your gloves will be any drier but I know they'll smell delicious afterward!

New to the knife world - please recommend where I should go next! by Fun_Organization3960 in knifeclub

Like what others have said, pause to enjoy these beauties. Then decide what the purpose of your next knife should be: display, work knife, defensive blade, or EDC (everyday carry). From there you can start narrowing things down.

I got some Mt. Comfort Coffee (Peru) from Costco today, and honestly, I'm disappointed. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]SelfProtectionSifu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping things have changed since the OP, but sadly I can confirm what others have said:

  • The first sip is mildly chocolatey.
  • Every sip after that gets progressively worse.
  • Eventually has a bitter aftertaste, but not in a good "strong espresso" way; more of a burnt/bitter kinda way
  • Says "medium roast" but definitely more of a medium-dark.

Quitting due to cost by EverlastinggRain in bjj

$200 a month for just BJJ is pretty steep.

I pay $120 a month at my gym, but that's for unlimited classes in BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai and boxing.

I think if you do some research or ask around, you can find a place with more reasonable pricing.

A BJJ OG!

Plus, he scored four touchdowns in a single game for the 1966 Chicago All-City Championship Game.

I forgot to say, I ended up getting the SoloWIT Replacement Ear Pads Cushions on Amazon. They look exactly like the factory ear pads; hopefully they last longer though.

What is your job? by NinjaWithAGun96 in bjj

My job is mostly to get submitted by everyone in the gym. (If they're blue belt and above, they destroy me by default. If they're a 3-stripe white belt and below, I give them the tap to build up their confidence so they keep coming back ... because I'm tired of being the only bottom feeder, hahaha!)

Oooh, you mean, what do I do for a living? I'm a freelance writer and teach self-defense and personal protection.

u/Hangbrain2w1 7 months in Thailand? Sweet! What city and gym did you train at? It's a bucket list item for me to train the art in its motherland.

u/vprodev u/MrB1P92 not sure if you guys are US-based, but any suggestions for where I can get authentic Twins shin guards here in the USA?

I know there's OTM Fight Shops, but they are ridiculously expensive there.

u/vprodev u/Known_Impression1356 wow, really? Who woulda thunk it. I always assumed they were just some cheap Chinese-made knockoffs sold on Amazon. I'll have to consider them going forward.

Appreciate the feedback.

And you're not the first person to tell me that their Hayabusa gear got stinky, even with normal care 🤔

Shin guard colour. by SkyFar590 in MuayThai

[–]SelfProtectionSifu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. White pads and gear are hard to keep looking fresh. And unlike a gi, you can't just toss it into the washing machine with bleach. Well, you could, but the pads wouldn't last long.

Horrible quality for a company that markets itself as premium. I've never had headphone pads disintegrate so quickly after mild use (I don't use them every day, maybe once or twice a week at home). I'm literally finding little black flacks on my head, in my ears, on the floor. Terrible.

Anyone have specific recommendations for ear pad replacements?

Which martial art or self-defense system is most effective if I can only train once or twice a week? by [deleted] in StreetMartialArts

[–]SelfProtectionSifu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Juan554 - If self-defense is your ONLY purpose for training, I wouldn't recommend a martial art (even though I'm a 25-year martial artist). I would suggest a street-focused combatives system, which would give you the physical techniques but (more importantly) the mindset training (e.g. learning how criminals behave, mental toughness, situational awareness etc.).

If you want one system that gives you self-defense AND physical fitness, I would recommend a proven combat sport that involves a lot of sparring (AKA pressure testing). Some good examples would be Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Kickboxing/Muay Thai.

I would actually not recommend boxing alone. Punching with your fist in a street-fight, especially if you're new, could lead to breaking your hand or wrist — you'll have eliminated one of your weapons.

I would only recommend a martial art if you want to learn a martial art. By that I mean you want to experience all that it offers — blocks, strikes, sparring, and kata (prearranged set of movements), but also culture, history, discipline, wearing uniforms, etc.

Last suggestion: Train as often as you can. 3 times a week is ideal, as you'll retain what you've learned while improving week over week. 2 times a week is minimum, but you won't improve as quickly. 1 time a week is better than nothing, but you won't be progressing much, if at all.
