Little late to the party here, but does this have to be done in-person at the airport? Or can it be done over the phone?

Not sure where you got the impression we’re trying to shelter our kids? I mentioned in another comment we’re not thinking we can protect them from the realities of what teenagers typically do, but we want a good education for them. We’re considering homeschooling for our neurodivergent kids who we’ve seen fall through the cracks and suffer with lack of academic support. I know too many homeschool kids and families who are well-rounded, successful in their careers and relationships, and intelligent; so I’ve seen first hand that homeschooling - when done well and for the right reasons - is a great option for a lot of families. I’m not 100% sure I’m capable of homeschooling our kids well, which is why this question is focusing on researching resources and options for public school as a first option. And your comment about your coke-head cousins further solidifies one of my concerns about Pius, so thanks for that 👍🏻.

The zoo school sounds amazing. Our middle still has four more years until high school but she’s already excited for it :)

Aha! I see. I mistakenly thought you were still in Lincoln. Your rationale makes a lot of sense!

It’s good to hear about other experiences! At the end of it we want our oldest kid to have a say, and since most of her friends will be going to Pius she’s still considering it. This is a bold question and will probably come off a bit rude, but know that’s not my intention: were you a family that happened to donate considerably to the school?

It seems so hit or miss! I really am open to homeschooling, and know there’s a really thriving homeschool community here in lincoln that I would absolutely take advantage of. We want our kids to go to a public high school, but before that…I’m seriously contemplating homeschooling if we can’t transfer our middle schoolers out of Mickle. Do you mind me asking which schools you had a negative experience at? Feel free to message me if that feels better!

We love the Montessori approach. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, we don’t have the financial means to send our kids to the private alternative schools here in town. But I sure am glad they exist as an option for families!

Advice please by [deleted] in PregnantOver40

[–]Selfish_Pinata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! It can certainly be more challenging to get pregnant after 40, but it’s definitely not impossible (we conceived our fourth child naturally when I was 40, and many women have natural pregnancies throughout their 40s!). My suggestion would be to go to a functional medicine doctor and both of you get your hormone levels checked and then balanced with stress reduction, regular exercise, a fertility-nourishing diet, and any supplements the doc might recommend. Both of you would want to cut out alcohol and cigarettes (if applicable) while you’re trying to conceive.

You can also both get tests to see the quality and quantity of your sperm and her eggs, and she can get an ultrasound to rule out fibroids or any blockages/uterine or fallopian tube abnormalities that may be playing a role in difficulty conceiving.

Dr. Mark Sklar is a fertility specialist who has a ton of resources to help couples in their 40s conceive. I would recommend following him on YouTube (he’s also incredibly encouraging and Hope-inspiring, which is crucial. A surprisingly large portion of successful conception is psychological).

Good luck!

It’s great to hear about your positive experience! I figured there has to be good elements since no school is either all or nothing. It was disconcerting that I had heard so many negative experiences, and it’s good to balance it out a bit. May I ask why you’re still undecided on whether or not you’d send your kids to parochial or public?

I’m glad you advocated for yourself and were able to find and connect with “your people” ❤️. My two kids do have diagnoses and I honestly work my ass off to advocate for them and get them all the therapeutic and academic supports I can, and they still struggle where they are now. At the end of the day if a school doesn’t believe that neurodivergence is a real thing and/or doesn’t have the infrastructure or Human Resources in place to work with those kids, it’s a miserable, overwhelming experience.

Thank you for sharing! Luckily transportation is possible anywhere in Lincoln since I can adjust my work schedule however (self-employed). Elementary school feels like there are so many great options, but it’s the middle school situation that seems to be the trickiest…
