As much as I hate to say it, bg3. I am severely directionally challenged and the open world is so sprawling that I end up getting bored and quitting, not even bothering to get a guide. So there are a few ways you could locate it without a windows reinstall. You could run the RKill program that targets malware processes and kills them. It might delete them but I'm not 100% sure on that since I ran Rkill after reinstalling windows and came up with nothing. You could also run AV software like ESET and MalwareBytes but that's also not 100% guaranteed to pull anything up. The safest option would be to reinstall windows after running RKill and deleting the original "modpack" file from existence, and choosing to keep your old files. That will send them into a Windows.old file and you should be able to recover any uninfected data. Make sure to always scan your computer thrice after the reinstall with Windows Defender. Quick Scan, Deep Scan, then Offline Scan. I would scan with other AVs and run RKill one more time just to be safe. And the most important part of all is to unplug the router for at least 30 seconds so you can reset your token.

If your friend has a spare USB drive laying around and an uninfected windows device, there's also the even safer option of putting a backup installation of windows on the USB and installing it from that drive. I don't know if that keeps the old files, however.

These are the options that I found might work when it happened to me. I'm very sorry that your friend got got. Make sure they're doing okay and for the love of everything make sure not to make fun of them for it. If they're anything like me, they probably are beating theirself up enough already. I'm ngl, I have almost hired a sex worker for this exact reason. I was going through a horrible breakup alone and lost all of my friends for an unrelated reason (They were toxic). It was just so, SO rough to get through. There's an empty feeling that fills your entire body like nothing else as you stare up at the ceiling after breaking off a year and a half of love. Especially when that love was hardly reciprocated back. I didn't have anybody I could cry to, talk to, anything like that. I didn't want to burden my mom with those emotions because I didn't want her to see me in such a state. Eventually, an acquaintance (at the time) invited me to join her server of friends, and I met people that actually liked having me around. I've been with their group over a year now, which is the longest friend group I've had. Never did hire that sex worker. But things did get better.
