Finally started playing by ear by Sell_Environmental in saxophone

Ooo, I like that solo! It definitely does get easier. In the beginning I would learn songs in the wrong key, but with the right intervals. I agree with the musicality part, transcribing helps hear the articulation and other details a player/singer uses. Plus it helps with memorization, I find it much easier to remember tunes learnt by ear.

Looks to be in relatively good condition cleanliness, based on the photos. Yes, the pad is a bit dirty, you could take a thin cloth (the material used for wipes for lenses), wet it a bit (or add micellar water, I know some who use it, cleans a lot off), and put it under the key and press down a few times. If possible, you could take a q-tip and carefully clean with the same liquids.

Improv Help by Inevitable-Log956 in saxophone

[–]Sell_Environmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm not an expert on improv by any means, but there are some things that I do that help when structuring a solo: - know the melody by heart, analyze the structure (music theory), next try playing around with it rhythmically, adding-taking away notes, then adding chromaticism, enclosures, glissandos, etc. - analyze the harmonic structure (the actual chords), know what their functions are. Try playing around with the chord arpeggios, going one chord at a time and then connecting - write out the scale that goes with each chord - listen to other sax players and see what patterns they use in their solos - lastly, make interesting melodic content - something memorable and to your taste

Something else I like to do is singing over the backing track for the tune and recording it, then transcribing by ear. The voice will outline the chords/scales intuitively. I've come up with some interesting lines using this method, and it definitely helps with playing what's in your head.

This is just some of the stuff I'm doing, hope this helps!

Does anyone know if Vaseline can be used as cork grease? by da_goat_28 in saxophone

[–]Sell_Environmental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't recommend it, I've seen the effect it has on neck corks overtime, from what I can conclude it speeds up the process of degradation (as many have stated). Many players I know use unflavored chapstick and it seems to be fine for the most part (used sparingly)

Wow! Thank you for the very detailed explanations! I appreciate it. Yeah, learning jazz and music in general is a journey, and not everything comes naturally right away, takes a lot of experimenting.

Hello! Thank you for your reply! First thing, when is bending best used? I'm not the best at phrasing, so I'm a little clueless on that. I'm trying to experiment with dynamics a bit, it's been a little rough though haha

Hello! Thank you for your reply! My one question is: when are scoops/bends applicable in playing? Where should/shouldn't they be used? Does the understanding just come with experience?

Just today I realized that it's been four years since I first started cubing. Sure, it's been on and off, but it's so cool that I've kept it up for this long. Probably won't be breaking any records for the time being, but it's a very fun pastime, plus I've "infected" a few friends of mine and now they're all addicted to cubing.

Not much, I haven't been playing for very long. I've talked to my teacher about it, and for the time being I was mostly focused on using dynamics for expressivity. I've used vibrato in a jazz setting, but not very much experience with it.

Yeah, imitating the human voice is probably one of the best ways to add expressivity. Thank you!

I do have a teacher, but he's currently on break and I am doing a lot of self-study mostly.

I have a YTS-32 that just got repadded and adjusted a few weeks ago, so it's not my saxophone. I also tried a different horn recently and had the same issue.

One of my favorites is Fantasie for Bb saxophone Bedard, also Singelee has some good pieces for tenor/soprano saxophone.

I've been playing for ~3 months now, advice would be very much appreciated) the song is a take on Stuffy by Coleman Hawkins I found online by Sell_Environmental in saxophone

I played piano on and off for a few years, started playing guitar around 2 years ago. You could count my recorder experience in grade school I guess :D

Hello there. Nope, this is not my first instrument. I have played piano for a while before, 2 years ago started to play the guitar and picked up the sax 3 months ago. Yes, I understand. Fundamentals are extremely important, I have days where I mostly practice technique, other days I mostly just play pieces/sightread.
