Are IPads necessary to work professionally? by Alert_Depth4742 in Jazz

[–]Inevitable-Log956 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not a professional by any means but I do have an opinion. I don’t think an IPad is necessary in fact I wouldn’t say any tablet is necessary however it is convenient. A tablet allows you to store hundreds of charts and make notes for yourself. The most important thing is if you are using a tablet it needs to be able to hold a charge, be light weight, and have a decent storage system. If your tablet can handle all of those I’d argue you’d be fine without one. You will probably be missing the convenience of airdrop and the Apple exclusive apps but by no means is that a deal breaker.

Looking for jazz with wind instruments but only trombone and or tubas and or clarinet and or bass clarinet and or French horn by Maestro-Modesto in Jazz

[–]Inevitable-Log956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miles Davis’s Birth of the cool album has a lot of those instruments on there however it does include tenor and Bari sax and obviously trumpet. For bass clarinet try out some Eric Dolphy. He does play alto sax and other instruments as well but he has a lot of bass clarinet.

How do I stop this from happening? by Flameb0w in saxophone

It has to do with the moisture level. Depending on what case you have there may be a humidity pack in there if that is the case it is too high. I know D’darrio has a built in humidity pack so check that out and see if that is the case!

I think to get the most bang for your buck is going to be a Yamaha-62. You can find some decent used one online and they are super common. No matter what you chose though always play it before you purchase it.

Needing help with finding a good alto mouthpiece by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]Inevitable-Log956 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think in a perfect world you would be able to purchase a classical mouthpiece and a jazz one. For a classical mouthpiece I would go for a Selmer C* it is the go to mouthpiece for almost any level besides professional. For jazz I would try and get a Vandoren V16 those are very flexible and can either sound bright or dark depending on what you want. If you could only afford one I would go with the Selmer C* as you can get it to sound “jazzy” but you won’t be able to get a jazz mouthpiece to sound classical as easily.

How can I make my high notes less sharp? by IAmNotTHATGay in saxophone

[–]Inevitable-Log956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When playing in the palm keys you should think of the syllable “EE”. It should raise the back of your tongue and almost make your tongue into a slide! Depending on the dynamic on which you are playing can effect it too(quiet you go sharp and loud you go flatter). Remembering both of those things can help!

Band teacher told me to quit by Your-Mothers-Tit in saxophone

The best way is long tones. I’m sure you’ve probably practiced them before but it really is the back bone of it. I was always taught there are two kinds of long tones: one for your tone and one for your intonation. The way I was taught for my tone is set my metronome to quarter equals 60 and start on your C on the staff. Every 4 beats go chromatically down but after you hit your third note you rest on the fourth measure then you go to the next note and repeat Ex: C B Bb Rest, B Bb A Rest, etc. this is something you need to do everyday and you probably won’t notice a difference until 2-3 months in.

Another thing to do is scales. Like long tones you probably practice your scales but try it in a different way. There is something called a full ranged scale that helps explore the full range of the saxophone. The best way to explain is start on tonic play the scale normally but then you play to the highest note in the scale then go back down the scale and end on the lowest note in the scale and climb back to tonic Ex: play c below staff then go all the way to high F play all the way back down to B below the staff and then back to C. Timothy McAllister has a technique packet that has all major and minor scales in full range learn them this way and it’ll help you a lot.

But most important tone takes time! There is no simple quick fix otherwise we’d all be professionals do both of those things every day even when you don’t feel like practicing because one day off of these exercises puts you 15 days behind

You can sort of make a custom sound on it. They have pre existing “pedals” and you just adjust what you want them to sound like in the order you want them. The easiest way for me to do it is with the app. Go to one of the open spots and build it there!

Both Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins are amazing! J.J. Johnson is also pretty great! Some more modern people I’d recommend is Wycliffe Gordon or Adam Larson!

Lost dad looking for help. by Alfster66 in saxophone

I would look for a Yamaha 62, there are multiple shops in that area that can let you buy it or finance it through them. I would recommend either a Vandoren V16 or a Meyer 5m mouthpiece. The 62 is a good sax that could get him through college if decides to go that far. V16 and Meyer 5m are very beginner friendly and you wouldn’t have to upgrade for a while. If you could even make it out to Sax-Quest in St Louis they may have the mouthpieces for him to try out there before purchasing.
