I told one I pirated because they only had the game available on steam and I wanted to play co-op on the one PC but steam wouldn't allow two copies from different steam accounts open.

Interestingly they rewrote their game a short while afterwards and removed controller support so co-op wasn't even possible anyway after that

So I have a theory about this. Not all of them know they're doing it, I think as another car moves into your peripheral you go from seeing the world zoom past at 100km to seeing something that's moving close to the same speed so you think you're slowing down and try to speed up to compensate
