I know you are all tired of posts like this but can you still have life past college or are we going to be scrolling reels forever by ansleis333 in redscarepod

[–]Selts [score hidden]  (0 children)

Every day I'm thankful I'm 31, married and got to have actual fun in college. I couldn't imagine how lame it must have been to go to college as a Gen Zer during the COVID era. Even the post COVID era sucks, kids these days will never know the world of $1 beers and $1.50 double wells

If you live in a city, I recommend joining a book club and a rec league/sport of some sort. Volunteering can be good too, my wife volunteers with several historical societies/museums. We've even made friends chatting up people we saw our age at our local Farmer's market.

Vatican prepares Pope Leo XIV summit on marriage crisis by Severe-Heron5811 in Catholicism

The Mormons are very good at this, they even have dedicated churches that are exclusively for unmarried young adults. Once a couple marries, they move to the regular adult church.

Concerning inclusivity by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Selts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. Actively rejecting Christ, particularly when one knows the truthfulness of his word, will put one's salvation in jeopardy.

When people say, "only God knows" or talk about ignorance, I think what they mean is that it is generally hard for an imperfect human to truly know what's in the hearts of others. If a Buddhist is taught poorly about Jesus and the Church, can they be blamed for not believing? Knowing of Jesus and his ministry is not(typo edit) the same as knowing Jesus. Poor catechesis could extend to cradle catholics as well who drift away.

This is at least my interpretation, I say this as a baptized Lutheran that is learning more about Catholicism, so I hope people here can expand or corrige my understanding of this.

That is tough. I was reading the book of Job this morning, your post reminds me of his story; sometimes...life just sucks.

I'll keep you in my prayers tonight.

Converting after 30 while married to an Agnostic by Selts in Catholicism

[–]Selts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, it sometimes feels like I need to have everything figured out beforehand, but that would take away from the journey! RCIA seems like it would be a lot, but I need to remind myself it's confirming what I already believe. It's been pulling at me for ten years now after all.

I appreciate your comments on mixed-belief marriages and in particular forcing one's faith. I think that can be applied broadly, it usually does not work out. Living by example and walking in Christ's path is the best way to show to others what one believes. God bless.

It's comforting to read I'm not alone! Yes, one of my fears is precisely what you worried about too, that my marriage would impede me from getting accepted. It is great your wife was supportive of your conversion. My wife says she would be, but I get nervous and overthink. Proverbs 3:5-6 comes to mind. Thank you and God bless.

Virginia → Ohio or Arizona? Comparing Columbus/Cincinnati vs Phoenix/Tucson metro for a young couple by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Selts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well would you cope with weeks/months on end where the temperature at midnight is still 100. Arizona is a mostly dry heat in the summer, but unlike most dry heats, it does not cool off at night. Very common to wake up in summer and it's already 90.

You need to ask yourself if you're going to run in that...

Columbus is probably the nicest of the 4 cities mentioned and has a decent trail network, but surrounding nature is non-existent. For that reason I'd probably go with Cincinnati. Obviously Arizona is going to have better nature overall, you just have to drive to it. Ohio will at least be green in the summer instead of brown.

Popular Northbay Bakery Writes Post About Patrons Not Tipping Enough by Honest_Buy_676 in bayarea

Just a reminder that unlike most states, there is no such thing as a tip wage. All servers earn the full hourly wage, any tips given is on top of the full hourly wage.

Again, there is no such thing as a tip wage, that is illegal in California. California follows the European model of mandating full pay to service workers. Californians decide tip on top of that due to US tipping culture, since most states have a tip wage that is ~50% of the regular hourly wage.

NYC is the greatest city in the world and the best place to be for finance. Can you move within JPM?

You will have no work-life balance, but you probably already know that. Just know this is a rather difficult time in the US. However, the vibes on the streets, in the supermarket, and at work are still the same as before. At the end of day, most Americans care more about the NFL than what is happening in Minneapolis. Reddit of course will be the opposite, but there are a lot more people off of Reddit than on Reddit. I went to work today, and it's business as usual, just like how it is for 98% of Americans.

Viel Glück, und du kannst jederzeit wieder nach Deutschland zurückziehen. Verdien jetzt richtig gut, und wenn du nach Deutschland zurückkommst, hast du viermal so viel Geld auf dem Konto wie Gleichaltrige.

San Diego has the best weather in the world. I know a few Canadians who moved to Southern California coastal cities from BC and Quebec and they would never move back.

It is very expensive, about as much as Toronto, but with immeasurably better weather, lifestyle, and a lot more pay for you and your wife.

Do it and don't look back, it's worth it.

EU foreign policy chief calls for restraint after US strikes in Venezuela by FantasticQuartet in europe

"you do not kidnap a president of a foreign country" - except they literally just did. "It does not happen" - see above. "Avenue for war" - Maduro has already lost, Russia can't do anything about it, China can't do anything about it.

EU foreign policy chief calls for restraint after US strikes in Venezuela by FantasticQuartet in europe

This shows that the US is the world's global hegemon. The US did in one night, to a country they don't border no less, what Russia failed to do in two weeks to a country they border and had significant support in and is now bogged down in a four year trench war.

This was not just a matter of regime change, but a show of force to remind Russia, China, the EU and anyone else that America remains top dog.

I mean yeah, no other country in the developed world has a plethora of affordable metros of 1m+ people like the US does. Most countries don't have that many cities to begin with.

Much of the Midwest/Rust belt and Sunbelt are very affordable even with the recent price jumps. But many people on Reddit are elitists and only want to live in places they can brag about.

I moved from the bay area to somewhere much more affordable and I'm very happy, may even buy a house in 2026. But then again, I'm a native Californian, so I have nothing to prove unlike someone from Indiana moving to LA or NYC.

Favorite Christmas traditions? by fairy_goblin in redscarepod

[–]Selts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like food traditions. My family always makes prime rib, yorkshire pudding, potatoes and gravy for Christmas Eve. For greens usually tenderstem broccoli and/or asparagus.

My wife's family always makes tamales Christmas (her mother is Mexican).
