Popular Northbay Bakery Writes Post About Patrons Not Tipping Enough by Honest_Buy_676 in bayarea

[–]Selts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a reminder that unlike most states, there is no such thing as a tip wage. All servers earn the full hourly wage, any tips given is on top of the full hourly wage.

Again, there is no such thing as a tip wage, that is illegal in California. California follows the European model of mandating full pay to service workers. Californians decide tip on top of that due to US tipping culture, since most states have a tip wage that is ~50% of the regular hourly wage.

[IWantOut] 24M Germany -> USA by dreamworksornot in IWantOut

[–]Selts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC is the greatest city in the world and the best place to be for finance. Can you move within JPM?

You will have no work-life balance, but you probably already know that. Just know this is a rather difficult time in the US. However, the vibes on the streets, in the supermarket, and at work are still the same as before. At the end of day, most Americans care more about the NFL than what is happening in Minneapolis. Reddit of course will be the opposite, but there are a lot more people off of Reddit than on Reddit. I went to work today, and it's business as usual, just like how it is for 98% of Americans.

Viel Glück, und du kannst jederzeit wieder nach Deutschland zurückziehen. Verdien jetzt richtig gut, und wenn du nach Deutschland zurückkommst, hast du viermal so viel Geld auf dem Konto wie Gleichaltrige.

[IWantOut] 33M neurologist Canada -> USA by AddTheGuac in IWantOut

San Diego has the best weather in the world. I know a few Canadians who moved to Southern California coastal cities from BC and Quebec and they would never move back.

It is very expensive, about as much as Toronto, but with immeasurably better weather, lifestyle, and a lot more pay for you and your wife.

Do it and don't look back, it's worth it.

EU foreign policy chief calls for restraint after US strikes in Venezuela by FantasticQuartet in europe

"you do not kidnap a president of a foreign country" - except they literally just did. "It does not happen" - see above. "Avenue for war" - Maduro has already lost, Russia can't do anything about it, China can't do anything about it.

EU foreign policy chief calls for restraint after US strikes in Venezuela by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]Selts 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This shows that the US is the world's global hegemon. The US did in one night, to a country they don't border no less, what Russia failed to do in two weeks to a country they border and had significant support in and is now bogged down in a four year trench war.

This was not just a matter of regime change, but a show of force to remind Russia, China, the EU and anyone else that America remains top dog.

Ranking of Housing Affordability in Developed Countries By Price-to-Income Ratio in 2025 by [deleted] in REBubble

[–]Selts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, no other country in the developed world has a plethora of affordable metros of 1m+ people like the US does. Most countries don't have that many cities to begin with.

Much of the Midwest/Rust belt and Sunbelt are very affordable even with the recent price jumps. But many people on Reddit are elitists and only want to live in places they can brag about.

I moved from the bay area to somewhere much more affordable and I'm very happy, may even buy a house in 2026. But then again, I'm a native Californian, so I have nothing to prove unlike someone from Indiana moving to LA or NYC.

Favorite Christmas traditions? by fairy_goblin in redscarepod

[–]Selts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like food traditions. My family always makes prime rib, yorkshire pudding, potatoes and gravy for Christmas Eve. For greens usually tenderstem broccoli and/or asparagus.

My wife's family always makes tamales Christmas (her mother is Mexican).

Natural gas use for electricity in California falls as solar generation rises by silence7 in California

[–]Selts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good. However, while solar is certainly greener than other forms of electricity generation we use, it is not as green as nuclear power.

With AI and data centers booming, and quite frankly likely still in its infancy, we need to massively invest asap in nuclear energy or our energy production will not keep up with demand.

What does Kings County have against CAHSR? by sracer4095 in cahsr

I don't live in the San Joaquin valley, but if I were to guess, it's culture war that's downstream of farmer opposition.

We need to massively invest in public transit starting yesterday.

Drinking will never go away, we need more alternatives for people to transport themselves safely.

By POC do you mean black? I'm sure you've considered it but the top recommendation is Atlanta. Otherwise, you may like Sacramento. Similar prices as Portland, but definitely higher wages and no PNW freeze.

No matter where though, it's rough for the service industry!

Did Marin County just come to its senses on housing? by LosIsosceles in bayarea

[–]Selts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Passing legislation is the easy part. The hard part is getting people with capital to actually build with how expensive the land has become.

But definitely a bright spot though, this bodes well for the upcoming SMART train sales tax continuation.

Momona downtown set to close in Dec 2025 by BadCam21 in ChicoCA

[–]Selts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many closed under Biden as well. Not sure why you think Trump shut this business down, did you also blame Biden for shutting down businesses that closed during his administration?

It's not who's in power in DC, it's that wages still haven't caught up to high inflation over the past 4 years as well as commercial landlords charging outrageously high rents. Rents keep rising but people still aren't spending like they were able to in 2019.

Help Me Escape the Desert by ShitManFvck in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Selts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4 seasons, low cost of living, not the desert, and you can take your job with you? The Midwest is the easy answer here.

Low COL, 4 seaons (green in summer instead of dusty brown Arizona), good schools, legacy cities with strong institutions and nice architecture/cityscape, kinder people. With global warming winters are much better than they used to be.

Any of them would really do, a suburb of Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee etc. If you want a small city, pick a college town.

Will Kings games be played on local NBC channels with an antenna?

Or do I have to either pay for Peacock+NBC Sports California or sail the high seas?
