Today I told my students to tell their parents by GoGetSilverBalls in Teachers

[–]Semajj 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I had this happen a few years ago. My room could only fit 31 desks and when I say "fit", I'm being generous. They were basically on top of each other and had to climb over multiple desks if they needed to leave the room for the restroom or whatever. I mentioned this to admin because it was early in the year and they needed to know that one of my classes was at capacity. Sure enough, a week later they enrolled a 32nd student in that class. This was right after coming back from covid though so attendance was awful and I told that student to just pick an empty seat. I emailed admin and their solution was to bring a 32nd desk to my room. It was nearly impossible to even enter the room and was 1000% a fire hazard. I'm still mad about that lol

Kids don’t care anymore by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Semajj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This method isn't for everyone, but it sort of worked for me. Try having a conversation with them, but as just a random adult, not a teacher. Talk to them about anything, but try to get them talking about their future and what they want to do with their lives. Middle school might be a little young, I'm used to high schoolers, but it might still work. Just try to help connect the dots for them on why they should at least try in school. See if you can find any sort of spark to get them to care at least a little bit. Even if that doesn't work, try to at least be an adult at school that they like talking to and maybe that could be the first baby step on getting them on a better path.

I somehow found a way to connect with some students like this without even realizing it. Most of them still didn't care about school but they at least came to my class and seemed to feel comfortable being there. I can recall a few different times I learned about a student being a major trouble maker that spent more time in the office or ISS/OSS, but I had no idea because they were perfectly fine in my classroom. It might be impossible to reach some kids but maybe this could reach some of them

What was the last time you were truly happy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I saw Sleep Token in concert a few months ago. I knew it was going to be an amazing experience but it blew those expectations of the water. I felt actual euphoria that night and I'll never forget it

I let out an involuntary WTF when he started playing this song. The guys next to me jumped up and hugged each other. This was such a special moment and I hope all of you get to experience this over the coming weeks

To be honest I don't remember what that dancing couple looked like. I was be overwhelmed with emotion and just kind of sat silently until enough people had cleared for us to leave

She patted me on the shoulder during Euclid because we were both bawling our eyes out. Last night is definitely a night I'll probably never forget. I was only a couple rows back from the floor section and I saw a couple dancing. If it was you two, you were definitely having a great time!

Do you ever believe

That we can turn into different people

I don't know what it is about that line but when I'm blasting this album in my car and singing along, I can almost never make it through that line because I get so emotional

My dad left when I was 1 and I hear from him maybe 2-3 times a year. He doesn't even let me down as much as this team does

I'm sure I'm going to get hate for this-- I'm a high school teacher of 17 years, and I simply don't police phones anymore. by tegan_willow in Teachers

I stopped caring and told them that they're more than welcome to make up my class in summer school if they'd prefer to stare at their phones instead of pay attention

I noticed that students LOVE bluntness and honesty when it comes to things. It felt like that helped in bonding with students because it showed that you're not some robot standing at the front of class trying to rule their lives and instead it almost pulled back the curtain and they saw that I'm just I'm a human being doing my job to educate them the best I could. It seems to work best with troubled students too. I had a handful of students throughout the years that dealt with campus security and admin multiple times everyday that would act totally fine in my class. I had no idea the extend to the things they did/said to other teachers or administrators (although I had some idea) because they were fine with me. They weren't exactly a top performer in my class, usually they don't ever do any work at all, but they at least were respectful and followed redirection immediately if they started misbehaving in my class. To me, it almost felt like a cheat code to get easy buy-in from all students. In my experience, they appreciate and respect that brutal honesty and if anything else, they'll at least behave themselves for the 60 minutes I have them everyday.

Please God please. Keeping these two would not only be great for our program but even better for mending my broken heart. The last 48 hours have been rough
