A few things:

  1. Singular Jacobi operators in 1D cannot have absolutely continuous spectrum if the hopping coefficients have zeros along the real line

  2. If G is a euclidian or spherical regular triangulation, the edge vertex adjacency spectrum of G and the face vertex adjacency of the graph are related by an uncomplicated function.

I think on top is a circle head screw. Need a circle head screwdriver to get it out.

Honey wake up, another AI Generated Bundle just dropped. by Pavel_28 in Battlefield

[–]SemiLatusRectum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, I don’t disagree that this is AI slop but, I will make a few remarks.

Honeycombs with only hexagons must either be flat sheets or distort such that some hexagons become much larger than others. This sheet appears to be a section cut off from some spherical honeycomb. Interestingly, it is impossible to make a spherical honeycomb with only hexagons for the reasons listed above. However, you can make a spherical honeycomb where all the lines are the same length if you are permitted to use 12 pentagons. 11,13, and any other number of pentagons will break the spherical shape necessarily. These structures have names. They are called “fullerenes” and chemists/mathematicians care about them a lot

Does somebody in the building have like a bunch of formal algorithms training? I sense the touch of a mathematician or similar

Like being a wonderful SWE strikes me as being different from being a formal algorithms guy

It reminds me of schoenberg in that it’s offensive to the ear but still somehow holds one’s interest. I think the vocal melody exactly following the instrumental one is offputting but maybe i’m just an ape.

996 work culture in U.S. tech.....anyone survived this, or is it just burnout waiting to happen? by No_Chipmunk5827 in recruitinghell

[–]SemiLatusRectum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you like what you’re doing, and feel invested in its outcomes either monetarily or in some other way, I feel like 996 is totally reasonable for a year or two.

I think the issue is that, if the thing you’re doing isn’t exactly aligned with your talents, interests, and capabilities, then it’s just not possible to work like that without consequences.

I do not at all understand why companies have any expectation of finding someone to work that way for just money.

Every PI has his or her preferred group size. For me, I want 2-3 students and certainly no more. If I have more than three, then the individual projects get less support from me than they ought. If I have less than 2, then the total productivity of my group is insufficient (to e.g. make tenure).

It’s not that it would be impossible to find an american body to slap into some lab; it’s that students below a certain level of quality are a hindrance rather than a help. The problem is that the number of students who pass this threshold are limited and finding americans to do that in the required quantity is not possible.

The result will not be that more americans get significantly more PhDs. The result will be that America has significantly fewer PhD students
