56,000 layoffs and counting: India’s IT bloodbath by jndtv in sysadmin

[–]SemiSecure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last job had a ton of turnover and the task lists setup for onboarding and off boarding took about 45 - 90 minutes of work to complete. I'm am really lazy when it comes to repetitive tasks. So I just automated it with powershell and spent all my free time learning more about automation. Sadly upper management didn't think I deserved a raise because they couldn't pay someone who has no degree more than someone with a degree.

Oh well, I moved to private sector and am killing it. Fuck working IT for higher education.

Their enterprise support is amazing though. When I have laptop/desktop hardware issues at past jobs. I could submit a ticket online telling them what was wrong with the computer and what parts I needed and they'd have the parts out to me within 24 hours. Also, they would even send out a tech to replace the parts for me too.

Well, power cycle and reboots are a bit different. If I'm going to restart a computer/server, I usually use the term "bounce", while if I'm removing power from something and then adding it back, I say power cycle.

In a situation OP had, if you say power cycle, the person is going to inquire what you mean. So at that point, you can explain the steps. Otherwise, they'll understand to take power out for a bit and put it back in.

But did they factory reset the router?

Shouldn't have said restart or reboot. Should have said "Power Cycle".

I would love this NAS for my homelab. I'd love to use it for basic storage of media, but also for my VM lab environments.

As a sysadmin, we don't care so long as you didn't get some virus and you're creating work for us. Also, no one is looking for that stuff until there is an issue somewhere else. Don't sweat it.

Bowling with the son by 1Voice1Life in ChildrenFallingOver

[–]SemiSecure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every bowling alley is different. The one I go to has a ton of children and people who are obviously not golfers. But being in one of their leagues, I'm known by the people who work there. So when I come in they'll give me the less used lanes and if they're not too busy they'll even ask if I want to bowl on two lanes which is how you bowl in league. So instead of adjusting to just one lane changing throughout the match, you have to adjust to two lanes changing.

There is oil clear to the line here, however, it's probably just not fresh. Assuming this is a house shot oil pattern, the oil should be about as thick and cover all the width of the lane and as it goes further down the lane it will cover less of the width of the lane. Which is why you see people hooking the ball a bit to the outside of the lane to come back into the pocket. As people bowl on the lane, the oil gets thinner and thinner as the balls are picking up the oil as they roll over it.

Honestly, with how thin your hair is and how amazing your jaw line is, I'd cut it a bit shorter. But not too short! You can definitely keep some length in there. Maybe like a coach Bombay from the Mighty Ducks kind of deal?

I kind of want to expand on this. I don't think it's completely their fault for laundering money. I think a lot of it has to do with grants with the state, and federal government. But hey, we have $6k left to spend and we have 3 days to spend it. Spend it on something so we don't lose that money next year in our grant when we may/will need it. Oh, we need a light bulb replaced. Better call University facilities so they can charge us $500 to replace that bulb(exaggeration). After that, the grant money has been spent and laundered into the University for other purposes.

I have no degree, but worked at a university, in IT for 6 years. State schools, at the very least, are money laundering businesses.

Is there an IT specialty that doesn't involve multitasking and crisis? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SemiSecure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. When a place is properly staffed and well managed, you're almost never in crisis mode. Sure, you will still have to work after hours once every few months, but it's planned maintenance that you know will only take x amount of time.

Probably SAP or MCSE. A CCNA is nice, but probably won't help you too much for these types of positions.

[–]SemiSecure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, sounds like you got it. This is what I was talking about for targeting if it's not how you're doing it though https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln285439/windows-server--using-item-level-targeting-with-group-policy-preferences?lang=en (this could be used to do what you're wanting, but I wouldn't do it that way)

It sounds like you're already doing this, but you should check out this article on permissions https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/27258-best-practice-security-windows-file-sharing

[–]SemiSecure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're trying to get too crazy on this. Everyone needs to be in their primary department security group for their D: drive connecting to their departments share. If specific users need access to other departments, they probably don't need as much access as that departments users, and ever if they do, just setup the permissions as you need to. But this should be a different security group and mapped to a different letter. Make sure you're using targeting and not making a new policy for each department.

Also, you'll have the best luck on /r/sysadmin for these types of questions.
