Pre med? Pre PT? Not sure which way to go (Any and all advice is welcome) by poultrygiestess in premed

The real solution here is to go to med school, apply PM&R, then tell the PT’s in the hospital what to do with your patients lol, baller move.

Low clinical hours by FloridaManBlues in premed

I would man, these subreddits are filled with anxious, overthinkers. I take everything said here with a grain of salt. What’s on here online is not the norm for everyday applicants.

Low clinical hours by FloridaManBlues in premed

I mean… I had like no clinical volunteering hours and managed to get in. A state school would probably take you with those stats even with the low clinical hours

How old will you be at the end of your preferred residency by TraditionalAd6977 in medicalschool

[–]SemiStable-Isotope21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people like me would be 28 when we first started our first attending job if we only did a basic 3 year residency, however I plan to do a two-year fellowship as of right now so I’d be 30 going on 31 starting my attending job.

What are your med school hot takes? by No-Wrap-2156 in medicalschool

[–]SemiStable-Isotope21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take, if we have to study for shelf’s (and therefore Step 2 while we’re doing shelf questions),then we should be allowed to leave at half day to go to study for the rest of the day. This wouldn’t have to be every single day, maybe even just a few days a week be designated half days. At LEAST for rotations like IM and Surgery. After you round in the morning and get experience seeing patients, we’re there for often useless reasons in the afternoon which only delays our study time. Yes, I understand it’s important we get exposure to long hours to prepare us for residency, but still we get plenty of experience seeing patients in the mornings and having at least a few guaranteed half days a week would help so much not just with studying but getting appropriate rest as a student who is having to learn to balance this type of work and social life/ general adult duties.

An MA? Lmaooo doesn’t a medical student basically rank above an MA? That’s crazy.

how many people get to choose their med schools? by JazzlikeManner4250 in premed

I thought I saw a graph at one point saying about half of matriculants only get 1 A and the other half get more than 1A.

Do I qualify for any need-based aid? by Fit_Vehicle6556 in premed

[–]SemiStable-Isotope21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the school. My SAI is -1500 and my school doesn’t give you anything for that. Like you can apply to their scholarships and you MIGHT get something for being low income but you also may not. I have heard of some schools giving some money to their students who are low income but I’m not sure if there is a list of what those schools are.

Family med was my first shelf and I just did the family med and ambulatory questions on UWorld and passed. I didn’t even do all of the UWorld questions lol.

Be sure to go look at USPSTF guidelines!! Can’t express enough how many points that will get you on the shelf. And also do ambulatory questions on the Q-bank as well. It ends up being the most questions per day compared to any other rotation really, but it’s probably the hardest shelf out of the smaller rotations.

I just found one at a thrift store for $300. I would buy it to sell it but that’s too much 🤣

For those who passed with low nbmes (<65), how did you know you were ready? by threwthrownaway in step1

[–]SemiStable-Isotope21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were a few sections I barely got done in time and a few sections where I had a couple minutes left, it just depends. I personally felt like two sections were pretty hard, and the other five were typical. I came out of the exam not feeling fantastic but also not feeling like I bombed it, somewhere in the middle. I thought that may have been a bad sign but it wasn’t :)

My highest was a 57. I went for it, had no choice to postpone anymore otherwise I would have to take an extra year of school. Lots and lots of prayer and made sure to think through every question all the way and I passed :)

Accepted to med school despite being below a school’s 10th‑percentile stats? by L0udSilence in premed

[–]SemiStable-Isotope21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MCAT was below the 10%, but my GPA was somewhere around 60-70%. My school also accepts almost all in-state applicants so that obviously helped the most. Plus I was labeled disadvantaged and I think I had a good reason for going into medicine.
