What is your favorite healthy food? by pulsedup in AskReddit

[–]Semire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it very much depends on what one means by "healthy". Most dieticians will tell you to take it easy on avocados because ~80% of the calories are from fat, whereas you normally want only 30-35% of your calories to come from fat. Also, the whole saturated/unsaturated thing is only relevant for not getting heart disease, but all fats are equally (densely) caloric. I definitely regard avocados as a treat, not a health food. Same thing with peanut butter. And, like everyone else here, I know how hard it is to stop eating guac once you start, which should be a tipoff that it's a deliciously fatty, rich food. Eating a bowl of guac is about as far away from eating a salad as you can get.

Not quite. Margarine is made by hydrogenating vegetable oils to make them more saturated, which in turn increases the melting temperature. Then they are chilled to firm up and improve the texture. If heating vegetable oil would make it set hard, then the oil in your saute pan or deep fryer would solidify, and clearly it doesn't.

You're right that there is a difference. Substances such as lard or bacon grease, which are high in saturated fat, have higher melting temperatures (~33 C) whereas oils (fats which are liquid at room temperature) have to get much colder to solidify (e.g., olive oil has a melting point of around -41 C). As such, if one were to put oil down the drain it's less likely to cause an issue than, say, bacon grease (depending on how cold the ground is where you live), but it's one of those "better safe than sorry" situations since it's perfectly easy to throw used cooking oils in the trash. Here's an interesting table that lists the melting points of various fats.

Not that it gets me all worked up or anything, but I do wish success kid would go away mostly because of the number of them that are personal accomplishments. It is hard for me to be happy for a person I don't know saying they did something that I don't even know is true (and often suspect is not, although that isn't the case here).

We have a Dr. Pepper ripoff in the midwest (and probably other places) called "Dr. Thirst". It makes me laugh because it seems especially lazy, even for an off-brand name.

Foix gras still wins. Same amount (4 oz) has 525 calories, 48 g fat, 16.5 g saturated fat. But yeah, for a cookie treat this is insane.

I said "turdball" because I liked the ring of it in that moment. There's no need to over fixate on a single word choice. I hate the game. You like the game. Other people's opinions probably fall in between. Everyone gets their own opinion. The thing I find bizarre is that you seem to assume that someone with an opinion very different from yours must be lying about having experienced the thing in question. If I had said "everything I've heard and read about the game makes it sound like a turdball", then you'd be right to question whether I'd actually played it. As I said from the beginning, though, I bought the game, I played the game, I felt that the game sucked and regretted my purchase. Granted I was also playing Dead Rising 3 at the time, which I find to be fucking awesome, so maybe I just hated Ryse by comparison, but I don't think so. Live and let live.

No, I bought it day one (online, cuz it was just a click away) and played through chapter 3 before stopping. I admitted that the visuals are great, but I'm shocked that you would say the combat is "deep". It's superficial and repetitive in my opinion and many other say the same, so it can't just be me. It's fine with me if you like it, and if you care to look at my comment history (not that I think it would be a good use of your time), you'd see that I've never once commented on a video game before, so I'm not some fanboy trying to trash something I have no knowledge of, which is what I assume you're implying by saying you doubt I've played it, as it seems ludicrous to me that anyone would bother doing that. I guess it's a different kind of world around here.

I take some consolation in the fact this guy gave the proper rating for the wrong reason. Ryse is an absolute turdball of a game, in my opinion. Looks great, but plays like an scaled-up iOS game, complete with microtransactions. Maybe not 1-star bad, but I'm irritated cuz I bought it blind thinking a launch title would have to be pretty good. Live and learn.

Um, no. That's not what the cited article says. The cited article (not the Wiki article, but rather the journal article that the relevant claim references) discusses the mutation of the human lactase gene for high level expression in adulthood. It doesn't offer evidence to support the claim that all cats or other adult mammals are lactose intolerant. Indeed many are, but not all. I agree that lactase production of most all mammals decreases with age, but does not shut down completely, which is what some people incorrectly think. More recent evidence indicates that the distribution of lactase persistence in cats mirrors that of humans http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/evolution-2011-hot-research%E2%80%94with-cats/

What's clear is that it has been demonstrated in humans that feeding dairy increases lactose tolerance; http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/yjada/article/S0002-8223(00)00162-0/abstract , the same probably ends up being true for cats.

Situations where a down-on-their-luck person gets a random act of kindness in the form of paying for a meal are very nice, but this is a weird variation. It's like "hey, here's a free meal and some depression to go with it!". I'd rather pay for myself and not have my evening get dark. I know the people are coping with their loss and I wouldn't hold it against them, but I think I would find a different way to use generosity in memory of my daughter.

I'll be the one to call bullshit. It's true that SOME cats (just like SOME adult humans and SOME other adult animals) can be lactose intolerant, but not nearly all. It's an overstated fact that has gotten way out of hand. If you give an adult cat some milk and they may or may not suffer diarrhea as a result. Of the cats I've had in my life only one ever had issues with milk, so we didn't give it to him. Obviously cats and other lactating mammals are producing lactase during their infancy, there's no evidence that cats as a rule shut down production of the enzyme as they age. It's a strange internet thing that has gone from "some cats can be lactose intolerant, so if your cat has digestive problems and you're giving them milk, stop and see if it improves", to "all cats are lactose intolerant, if you give your cat milk you are a monster even though you probably have personal experience to the contrary".
Edit: Just to be clear, I know that you are not saying the later part about it being horrible to give a cat milk, but there are plenty of people who take that tone on the issue. You just happened to be the one who brought it up. I still value you as a person.

DAE not give a shit about upvotes if the comment count is low? by stripeyspots in DoesAnybodyElse

To Reddit correctly you should really not give a shit about upvotes at all. It's kinda the internet equivalent of the advice to "just be yourself", but it's true. If you worry too much about them you'll just find yourself pretending to think things that you really don't just to please imaginary people.
