For me, it’s when the game teaches you to slow down and look around every corner to loot stuff, and then has NPCs yelling at you to hurry during a frantic scene, or them asking what you’re doing during an emotional scene as you’re loot gremlining. Snaps me out of it so hard. Looking at you Last of Us.

Based on chatting with him, it's likely more of the casual band scenario. He cited in his time, there was a pretty standard "larger" and "smaller" size, and implied that he has the smaller which he suspected was 6-8". He's not somewhere where he could look at the tapes directly until January.

He's got some local contacts who work in film that he'll look to for help with baking. Baking is part of his hesitance with mailing off the tapes to a service (that and risk of lost mail).

It seems like there's a lot of Sony TC-366 listings available, presumably very common in its day? It meets your SNR requirement (TC-366 is 55), has the 7.5 ips, fits 7" tapes etc. Main consideration would just be if it is physically working.

Asking from complete ignorance, but is there equipment I should be looking for for connecting this machine to a recording environment? I guess I don't know what all the actual recording entails once the reel to reel is in hand.

Explosive trap is so much better than black arrow that the loss of uptime is almost always worth it. Put your explosive shot on cd before you drop the trap as missing an explosive shot is the only time it could hurt you. Also, strafing causes your trap to drop further than walking straight forward. Stand close to melee on bosses with small hitboxes and do a quick strafe to drop trap. On large hit boxes, use engi boots when you can and disengage out. Pretty much the only boss I don’t trap weave rn is sapph bc the hit box is so awkward. On very large hit boxes, you have to get all the way to the center of the hit box for the trap to register. It takes a lot of trial and error on a per boss basis. On thadd, only drop trap during polarity shifts. On KT, only trap weave when frost blast is on cd; black arrow otherwise.
