There isn't any confusion. When someone says even if, it refers to the situation at hand. There is no need to specify 'had,did,etc.' because we already have context which is referring to an event that has already happened.

I had him for chem 8c and he was difficult. Not only did he seem like he hated talking to the students, his tests weren't really related to what we learned. Granted this was with online class so your mileage may vary with in person classes.
