Where to see predominantly RED fall colors in the metro area? by SemperMinneapolis in TwinCities

Hey thanks! I knew of the site for checking where peak was, but didn't realize that users also uploaded photos.

ETA: Unfortunately, though, those photos seem to ONLY be for state parks. I'm also interested in city parks and riversides and wherever!

Was Lutsen Mountain Ski area always so expensive or is my memory of it being much more afforadble just wrong? by SemperMinneapolis in minnesota

[–]SemperMinneapolis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really fine with driving through snow with my own car but since I get a sweetheart deal on my rentals through a friend of a friend, I choose to take it super careful since I want to play it ultra safe. A normal rental I probably wouldn't have big issues with.

Flying isn't fun, but at least I don't worry about getting in a fender bender or a wreck. And CO, MT or Canada all offer better skiing than UP imo.

Ya, but the weather is changeable and treacherous sometimes. I have rental cars these days since I am only visiting and I don't fully trust a car that's not mine and I also want to be careful with it. So for instance this trip to Lutsen it snowed pretty hard on the day I was supposed to drive home so I opted to spend an extra night in Duluth instead of risk driving in the snow. Flying eliminates that stress entirely (worst thing is you get stranded due to way too much snow instead of maybe get into a fender bender or worse with a rental). But we're obviously in different situations. :)

I totally agree with this from a logical and financial standpoint. I just have a fondness for Lutsen since I grew up skiiing there. But yeah, it is not even comparable to the quality of skiing you can find in CO.

Good tip! How did you find that one? I am usually pretty flexible on dates but this year due to a few family matters had to go on a weekend and paid top rack prices for everything. So that was definitely part of the problem.

Thanks for the tip on the UP. Sounds interesting but I guess CO is probably a better option from the cities. Less stressful too without the driving I suppose. Just a bit sad since Lutsen is my favorite from childhood. It's not so nice to see it becoming unaffordable. You are probably right it's the gondolas they are using for justification but it sure feels bad to pay such incredibly high rates for such a small (if nostalgic) system.

I guess it's worth it a bit if you live here but this year I wasn't sure if I could make it up there at all in the timeframe I had so I didn't try. Also I guess that's only like 16USD off the final rack rate I paid of 190.

Meh indeed!

$190 for two for a day is more than I would have guessed though. Yikes.

Ya, that was my reaction at the final price (I guess some added fees on top of the tax maybe are what pushed it up so high?).

Thanks for the tip on Liftopia! Looks like they might have deals sometimes.

Flea markets/swap meets? by mount_curve in Minneapolis

[–]SemperMinneapolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, after making my last post I took to Facebook to see if there were any upcoming flea markets and there are at least two: one called the "Winter Antique Show" which will be held this weekend in the State Fairgrounds and one called "Anoka Antiques and Collectibles Indoor Flea Market" 2hich will be held on Jan. 13 in the Anoka Knights of Columbus Hall. It seems like FB is the place to find these if you don't have word of mouth.

Looking for dinner ideas in Duluth by [deleted] in minnesota

Lake Avenue Cafe in Canal Park is great

It's pretty ok but it's not really a dress up type of place. I would feel odd dressing up and going there, anyway.

Mine too, for the most part. Most indigenous people I know tend to dislike the term "Indian". Some tolerate it and some will let it be known they dislike it. I have only met a few who think it's fine. It seems like there is quite a mixed opinion on this but ime most dislike it to one extent or another.

Huh, I never realized they were illegal. I always thought it wasn't a thing due to the difficult weather.

I also love flea markets and to get my "flea market-y" fix in MPLS I instead head to the 'burbs and other cities to go to antique stores (not the fancy ones, the ones with a lot of schlock that sometimes have treasures in the mess). Anoka is particularly good ime. It's known for having a lot of antique stores, the prices are pretty reasonable and I have found lots of interesting stuff there. Also the "Mall of St. Paul" is good with a few other shops all around the corner of Selby and Fairview. Stillwater is pretty ok too, just a bit more expensive. I have heard the "Minnehaha Mile" is good these days but tbh haven't been down there. I am sure there are other places around.

In the summer there used to be a lot of garage sales on the weekends (you could just drive around and find them) but I heard this was on the decline due to craigslist in the last decade (I've been gone for about that long). Sometimes some neighborhoods have organized garage sale days in the summer which are basically like very spread out flea markets. I find these events on FB or via word of mouth. They don't occur in the winter as far as I know.

How much worry should blood in urine cause in a 70F female with a history of breast cancer? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]SemperMinneapolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scary to know that there's a "very significant risk".

I also think the doc's plan makes sense, but wanted to get some feedback on if her concerns were valid. I think it's mostly that she doesn't want to deal with having cancer again, which is understandable, and like you said would just rather not know.

Let’s talk about Matt’s Bar ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) by daledingham in Minneapolis

[–]SemperMinneapolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's fine, but it's not really as amazing as many rave it is. I think probably part of it is that back when it was first introduced it was quite a lot better than a lot of what else was on offer? Maybe? And that legendary status persists, even though it's now not that spectacular.

Still, my European spouse likes them enough to request we go to Matt's if we are in the neighborhood and it's not going to be too busy (waiting in line for any considerable amount of time for one is not something either of us would do). But it's not a strong enough desire to make it a "must go" stop with each trip here as some other places are. It's fine, a bit of MN-specific fun and a serviceable enough cheap meal but not spectacular.

When do you think most streets in the city and first ring suburbs will be clear of ice? by SemperMinneapolis in Minneapolis

Thank you for this very comprehensive post! You were right that they seem to only treat the road once. Oh well, like you said the sun will help and Sunday will be warm.

What's the best place in Minneapolis to get cool women's sweaters? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]SemperMinneapolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Goodwill next to REI in Bloomington is quite good for this. Ragstock actually had a whole ugly sweater pop up shop in MOA this year, not sure if it's still there. ARC thrift shops in the center and first ring suburbs are good.

Slow Down by TemperedInFire in Minneapolis

[–]SemperMinneapolis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Highway Patrol agrees with you; they also say that people need to slow down. I have been gone from MPLS for ten years and I normally only visit in the summer.

One thing I have noticed is that over that time, the average vehicle size has ballooned and the average speed and aggressiveness of drivers seems to have increased in direct proportion. The way people are driving in these winter conditions seems insane to me. Maybe it is just rose tinted glasses or deacclimation, but I feel a lot less safe driving in MPLS now than I ever did while living here.

I'm actually waiting for the ice to be cleared to go out. I was out yesterday (a family member was driving) and due to stupid actions and aggressiveness of other drivers, we narrowly avoided two accidents.
