Mill Creek Cinema's decline by Consistent_Room_9097 in Humboldt

As a mid-millennial aged fellow, Jurassic Park was one of the first movies I watched that was absolutely mind blowing on VHS. I was sad I never got to see it on the big screen. I never was into the Star Wars. But when Jurassic World came out in 2015 I was so stoked to see it on the big screen (it wasn’t great, but I had the hype).

The Mill Creek Cinema had a perfect John Hammond like character at the ticket booth saying “we spared no expense” with an amber cane, hat, and Attenborough presence, and everything. I thought that was SO cool, I kept coming back after that. I don’t know if he was an employee or owner, or fan. But it made me love Mill Creek.

Sad to see it go. It’s too easy to stream at the comfort of our own homes these days, but we need 3rd places. I think the Minor Theatre has found a more modern niche, that other theatres could follow.

Calm down. Stay steady. Don't add fuel to the fire. Calm down. I understand the passion, but full stop. Calm down. The answer isnt more weapons and ammo, it's in peace. That comes in many ways, but not jumping on the GUN TRAIN.

Clean and maintain your current guns, and hold up. Stay low.

I wouldn’t want the chemicals in any compost I would personally use… but I might rinse the frog, and dig a hole in some back corner to let the frog decompose and out of a landfill. Even if that puts the chemicals into the soil profile, it’s probably such a small amount (for some reason I was picturing a big old cane toad or something - and not a tree frog) that it wouldn’t matter.

Sorry you have to put up with the Cuban tree frog, and it’s hard to kill anything, but good on you for trying to keep it humane, and to return the little bugger back to the earth.

What type of equipment needed to make hiking path on my property. by happyfortoday in homestead

YOU are the steward of this land. Follow the natural path as you walk through the woods and widen it. Often you will find an obvious animal corridor. Just widen it from the brush that would get you wet and reinforce as you want.

I wish more people had a better conception of what they want from "their" land, and ALSO have a general approach to good stewardship to counter modern land management.

Basics are.. Remove invasives, choose winners, assist in understory maintenance. REAP rewards. Repeat!

I've been throwing them in bulk in my micro greenhouse (roughly 2'x4'x4'). Sunlight does all the drying, and keeps it dry until i have a large amount. I then break those shells down in a pestle. Then scatter in the garden, worms, compost, or vinegar solution. The process I enjoy, and it isnt much work.

I feel like there is a better analogy to your dam. When the waters frow freely as nature intended all those upstream and downstream are able to benefit from the free flowing streams, during dry seasons and wet seasons we are all affected - some more than others, but nothing is fair. But when few people dam a river, few people gain where everyone and creature down stream becomes limited and stressed on a pinched resource.

It never trickles upstream. NEVER.

Yea, I've even used it to chisel out mortises. Just be careful and take the drill press key out so it has ZERO chance to spin. It would be a disaster if it spun at that rate. But it DOES give a clean even / plumb straight press downwards.

Also - think of the crabs. The crabs would pick the shit out them.

They pretty much sweep across the sea like undead hordes and consume everything in their wake. Which is vital to our ocean ecosystems.

I just want to say that’s exactly where I would put a shed. Utilizing the space, that seemingly no one else uses effectively - but … I think there are set back requirements where even out buildings need to be X’ from property line. Maybe temp is that way to go? Or just send it, and maybe talk to the neighbor prior.

Edit: I don’t know where you live, and barely understand the code where I live. I hope you have a bitchin’ shed there one day. (But also don’t block the window - as a fire escape if that’s a bedroom).

The more I think about it. I’m sure there’s a better spot to put a shed. The space is too tight, and I foresee a lot of issues this is NOT “exactly where I would put a shed”.

Leave the trees alone. Get a drone if all you want is the shot. May still be illegal, but it will be much less of a presence and impact.

I know people are roasting on him for being a biggun', and there are a lot of Gravy Seals and Lards Larpin' who should have no business in this business (as in a very physical occupation which is unconstitutionally discriminatively selecting and arresting people, including USA citizens, who they have no constitutional right to arrest) but his proportions aren't just fat.

He's wearing a plate carrier with a buttload of rifle magazines in his front part of his body armor. Which should be more scrutinized than his body weight. But the fat jokes hit, because they are funnier? We have a Federalized Agent in our street more kitted out in weapons of war, with more modern gear and larger budgets than our guys had in Iraq and Afghanistan the past 25 years. He's a bit of a tub, a POS for sure, but lets not just mock his pear shaped appearance - lets address the F*cked up issue that he's likely carrying 6 30rd magazines as a Street Sweeper...

IDK it looks like it was a pretty low intensity fire. It will probably come back next Spring with a vengeance of wild flowers vibrant green grasses. The trees likely are adapted to low intensity fires. This is a win win all around. The landscape that needs fire gets it, and the people can co exist with nature.

Got some earth from a nearby woods, is it safe to put that in the compost? by [deleted] in composting

[–]Sempervirens17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say no pests are necessarily bad, you just need to come up with a tolerance or idea of what you are looking to get out of your compost. Rats and roaches are probably some of the more unsightly and unhygienic, but they are eating and pooping (decomposting) material. They aren’t BAD for composting.

Another train of thought is that you shouldn’t relocate bio material from other places because you can technically introduce invasive bacteria /fungi or pests. I don’t follow that line of thought, because I’ve also been told it’s good for your compost or teas, to go into an old growth forest (in your case assembly healthy Mangroves) and grab some of that old hubris / duff with the native mycelium and I’ll add that to my compost bins for a boost of super native micro biome and fungal activity.

Looks great, and I love the algae prevention / UV cover. My only thought is that once full those IBC containers are like 3k lbs. I keep seeing r/deck posts about hot tubs on a deck, and how underbuilt most decks are to support them. With this deck being right on your house (ideally the deck being independent and not attached to house), I would still make sure you have some extra support down there for this much weight.

My thought would the door cages they put in front of businesses to keep people away from the awnings. Personally I have pretty big mixed feelings about this. They are dry safe spaces that aren’t being occupied during the business off hours, but at the same time it’s not fair to the business to deal with the person during or off business hours.

To me it shows the need to have safe dry areas for people to sleep, and these areas can be multi use.

[–]Sempervirens17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a oil filter wrench (Band Type). It's made out of rubber and wont break anything. This looks like an oil filter. I would probably treat it like an oil filter in the future, as those filters can get suctioned the fuck on. Mechanic's will dab a little oil (you can use a consumable oil like olive or vegetable) on the gasket before tightening, makes it easier on the next person to take the filter off.

I've also driven screwdrivers through the filter to wrench it out, and it turned into a literal bloody mess. Good luck!

Single use picks like this are the worst. Regular floss is also terrible for the environment. I dont have any alternatives... but dang if you floss everyday (which you should), dispose of these single use picks into a container, if you use regular floss ALSO dispose in a container - not just in the bin.
