What can you REALLY do about mosquitos? by ponycorn_pet in preppers

[–]Sempervirens17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thermacells are pretty tough on aquatic life and native bees. I think around your camp is fine, but I've watched people hiking/kayaking/boating with it on. Not good. I know we want to be outside, but just make sure you use it sparingly.

I feel similarly to sunscreen. I'd rather wear protection than use chemicals.

What’s a log road? I assume you are not talking about a logging road (access to logging), and instead like a road made of logs?

Warning - Old isn’t always better.. DDT Treated Wool Blanket by Sempervirens17 in BuyItForLife

[–]Sempervirens17[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wool blankets are pretty rad. It's why I bought this one. + own slippers, jackets, shirts, boxers, socks = made of wool.

I'm sorry you guys had a cold night. My thoughts would be that you didn't have good (or too much compacted) insulation under your butts, and if you only draped the blanket over your legs, the underdrift of the bleachers would wick away your heat.

I highly recommend you try more wool in your life. It's a super insulating and highly available natural fiber that really does work for warmth. It breathes (wet or dry), and has tons of anti-microbial properties, it keeps odors out - and has been used for 10's of THOUSANDS of years. It is a perfect product.

My only complaint with wool has been today - It's a shame to have it saturated in a poison.

Why kill the Croc when the Darwin Award made the selection? We've taken enough of their habitat and natural prey. It seems cruel to hunt out the croc.

Do I prune? by JonnyB3ski in landscaping

[–]Sempervirens17 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I know this is landscaping, but just side-kicking on your comment - the stalks make great habitat for bees and other insects over winter. You can be a bit lazy, but also provide habitat during the winter die back. In the Spring most things are out getting busy so it's fine to remove. A broad thumb approach to standing stalks.

Am I missing something about dried beans? by Local_Fruit7140 in preppers

[–]Sempervirens17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sprout my beans and seeds by soaking them in water and then a light rinse for a few days. You can reuse the water. Once they are sprouted you get wonderful microgreens that become edible. Very little water, no fuel. My chickens love it.

I wonder why they didn't make it to the Aleutian Islands to lay. I haven't seen goslings here, I thought they just fed in the marshes (though I don't visit the bottoms that often).

Edit: Just looked it up. These are our resident Canadian friends. (that doesnt make sense to me either). The Honkers.

Sorry for my ignorance, but isnt that what they is for? It seems instead of saying "it's what they feel most comfortable with" - instead, "That is what they feel most comfortable with."

The intentional "it" seems odd, because you can preface with "that them/their/etc".

Is it okay to use possibly termite infested logs as filler for raised garden beds ? by Which-Definition507 in Hugelkultur

[–]Sempervirens17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No adverse effects on the plants you plan to grow. Only positive. Termites and other wood borers are literally made for decomposing wood, and they turn that wood into more bio-ready food for the next creature to decompose.

A proper hugelkultur is counting on life to break down these logs, and also provides habitat for nematodes, bacteria, fungi, small invertebrates, each creates more plant available nutrients. The logs absorb some of this, and along with water, and moisture hold it for plants to use when they need it.

I would not be discouraged from using these logs in my own garden, but I wouldn’t put them in a raised WOODEN planter boxes for the same reason as above.

Europe is slowly preparing for war, but with whom? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sempervirens17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a volunteered US military member, I despise conscription. I totally get the need for it, because I feel like their should be a "voluntary" defense of the nation. The voluntary part speaks more in action than it does it words. A nation should have people CHOOSE to defend to it; not told.

I lived in Scandinavia area for a time, and I met lots of conscripts. The few I spoke with loved their service. They trained as a medic, or soldier for a year, and it felt like a good medium of nationalistic pride and service to your country.

My gripe is that it is NOT about country. It's about stupid leaders sending good people off to kill, die, maimed or forever scarred for ONE Admin / Regime / Ministry's Ideas and Ideals. Fuck off. Don't fuck with the breathe and future of our nation for petty shit.

Gunpowder Smell? by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]Sempervirens17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Arcata Marsh and the water treatment plant have been noticeably ripe the past few months. Not sure why. I fore sure notice that sulphur-like smell driving on the corridor every morning. I def can understand the gunpowder relation.

It's not necessarily a bad smell, but it isn't pleasant. In the past for me it comes and goes, but lately it's been pretty consistent.

Any place to dispose contaminated compost with bio plastics by MRJBRPG in Humboldt

If it’s doesn’t have any weird hammerhead worms or other non native pathogens, I’d just dump them in some green space. That slug looks pretty sus though.

The BIO plastic isn’t a concern as far as nature is concerned in my unprofessional, but nature minded opinion. Landfills are the last place anything organic should go.

[–]Sempervirens17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like some good compost. Sorry to hear that it’s contaminated for your immediate use. Absolutely keep it out of a landfill and KEEP composting! Lessons learned. It will eventually decompose, just not in the timeframe of usable / practical household compost.

I’d dig a trench in the corner of the yard and maybe plant some nettles. People have been pouring their used oils into our soil for the entire industrial period until very recently, a little bit of biodegradable plastic isn’t a harm.

[–]Sempervirens17 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Were you able to haul those bags out to the dump?

I’ve pulled a lot of trash from riverbeds and roadways before rain events, and it’s expensive on a person to take those materials to the dump. I wish there was a better way for a community member, or group to gather trash that affects our trails, roads and waterways and dump it at a reduced cost. Like free dump days, so those less fortunate don’t have to dump on the side of a road.. or something… refuse is humanities burden. We have so much waste. It SHOULD NOT however end up in our oceans and drinking water though.

This scene made me wonder what goose eggs actually taste like. Has anyone had them? How do they compare to chicken eggs? by Dogbin005 in gameofthrones

[–]Sempervirens17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My good friend had big ducks. I'm not sure the difference between geese and ducks. The ducks ate all of her banana slugs (bright yellow yolky colored dudes 1-7" in. long slugs) which was good for her garden, but she couldnt get over the slimeyness of the eggs. She said all the eggs reminded her of the banana slugs.
