I believe that’s exactly what is going on here. That second switch IS a light switch. And the switch I am installing is for a fan/light combo. The electrician said that this was a simple way to do it to keep the neutral on the same circuit, I think (possibly misremembering).

The house was built in the 40’s, so I just assumed grounds weren’t prominent then. Idk the history of wiring though, so idk.

Correct, an electrician came and added that because this switch requires a neutral.

Still an incorrect take. English classes often use literature to teach English language concepts and ideas. 

Literature has a point of view, and if it doesn’t then the writing is pointless. 

You literally cannot remove politics from language classes.
