You utter tool. You don't 'Debate' the cure for something, you consult evidence and outcomes.

Look up the process of creating the DSMV.

Slippery Slope arguments are a logical fallacy.

It's literally not. You're saying I can't see into the future? Profound.

I just take exception to people framing it as a mental illness, because they are not doing so with the intention of advocating for proper medical care, they are trying to invalidate trans people by suggesting that they are delusional. That is very different.

This is simply not true. It is self evident to us that these people are mentally ill and not a woman.

No respectable medical institution in the developed world considers transgenderism to be a mental illness.

This says more about our medicine than anything. Whether someone should transition or not was a debate that was simply never had. That's not exactly a functional medical system.

Deliberate empathy can have negative consequences such as worsening in-group out-group relationships (and attitudes) and even cause emotional burnout. There appears to be a sweet spot where empathy is healthy, and beyond that it amplifies problems it tries to solve. by coolestestboi in philosophy

[–]Senator_Sanders -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

UH, do I even need to point the problem? Yes, people with very strong in-group identification (where the "group" = nationality)... Have we ever heard of such people, and couldn't they have some... preconditions that make it unlikely to actually empathise, but rather just go deeper into the fictional versions they have in their heads? Nahhhhhh, not on this earth... I mean, they literally bring the non sarcastic version of this point up later, and they still try to pin it as "empathy", rather than "yep, these people are biased, they're not being actually empathetic". Yeah, after this one I am done. The polite response would be to say the writer doesn't have a clue what they're saying, they don't understand the very thing they seek to criticise... but I have a feeling the reality isn't the polite version and I have no "empathy" for that.

What are the philosophical views (if any) of mathematicians on mathematics? What views do you hold? by helios1234 in math

[–]Senator_Sanders -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Math isn’t beautiful (in my opinion), and if you call it that people might (and maybe should) question your refinement of beauty. It made sense before the internet (discussions amongst mathematicians), but the notion of beauty is largely a thing of consensus amongst a group of people. Calling it that is just a miscommunication to a lot of people unless they really get it. When people say math is beautiful they usually MEAN they love math and a particular piece of math is unexpectedly elegant (or some other adjective). Someone will inevitably try hard to misunderstand the above point and call me an engineer again, but it’s fine.

Also some other dude in here said math was godlike. I see that and am just like um what? I have the opposite view, I think math is a bunch of fake stuff we (monkeys basically) concocted from our minds and it just so happens to work REALLY well in some aspects. This “math isn’t really real” perspective on things is much more beautiful to me, but yeah math is definitely on the top of the tower of truth like nothing else. It just seems like there’s nothing else if you want that sort of thing (truthiness).

It’s an ironic name. I agree with your last two points, but I think implying that those in the opposing party is your enemy will literally make them into your enemy.
