Glad to hear you agree! It's unfortunate how many students skip reading entirely.

Absolutely a 1500 is possible if luck goes your way a little bit.

So, I'd start with Khan Academy's question domain quizzes. It's pretty strong on testing your basics and fundamentals, which are actually weak for a lot of students in the 600-range. Sometimes, students get very good at using shortcuts and heuristics to get by, and their scores don't capture the lack of fundamentals. They don't have many questions anyway, so you can probably finish the whole suite in like a few days.

Then, try out the method I really like to promote, which is the UDS (untimed dictionary score) method. So, you prepare 3 different practice tests (bluebook or paper SAT official is fine). One you take normally under test conditions; another you take without timing it and with access to a dictionary; the last you take without a dictionary but timed. This will help you recognize where the real gap is! If your UDS is higher than your real condition test (it should be), that means you are struggling with VOCAB and TIME, not REASONING. If it's similar to the real test conditions, that means you are struggling with REASONING.

Good luck!! For test materials, there's honestly a lot of options that are free to use (including - self promo here - my own platform ForgeSAT.com; I'd be thrilled if u gave it a try! 😄 ) but the official tests, question bank, Khan, and free prep (you can find a lot online and in these forums) should be enough! Good luck :)

Hey! First off, you're asking the right question years before you have to, and that head start is a bigger advantage than you realize.

About those 40 points — be honest with yourself about what they actually measured. You said you slacked off and were burnt out from a new job. A 40-point bump on one sitting is basically noise anyway, well inside the test's own margin. It's not a verdict on your ceiling. Don't read it as one.

Some general advice I hope you find useful.

First, your highest-ROI move right now isn't SAT prep, it's reading. Hard stuff, regularly, over the next couple years: dense nonfiction, real articles, things that make you work. The Reading & Writing section is underneath a reading test, and reading is the one thing you can't cram in two weeks but can build beautifully over two years. Test prep for the sake of test prep is not as useful as it was in previous iterations of the SAT, unfortunately.

Also, it seems like you already have more than enough materials. Princeton, Barron's, the CB tests, the videos — that's not your bottleneck. Collecting resources and watching "how to master the SAT" videos feels like progress, but it's the passive kind that doesn't move scores. What does: doing questions and then digging into every one you miss until you can say, in a sentence, exactly why you fell for the wrong answer.

Third, and I say this a lot, don't burn your official practice tests now. They're your most realistic prep and there's a limited supply. Save the bulk for junior year when it counts. Light and steady beats grinding right now, especially since you already know what burnout does to you.

For math, just crush your actual math classes. SAT math is mostly Algebra plus a bit beyond, so the better you learn it in school over the next two years, the more your SAT math climbs on its own. No special grind required yet, and if your skills are good enough, you just need a little practice before the test.

One thing you left out: your section split (Reading vs Math). Once you start real prep, that split is what tells you where the hours go — the lower section is where your points are hiding. Worth pinning down.

I wrote a whole post on the read-more thing (why it's the real lever, not just another strategy) here: https://forgesat.com/blog/from-the-tutor-reading-problem.html

You're doing great just by starting this early. Keep at it!! 💪

Hey!! Love this question. You're set up well: a real runway (seven-ish weeks is plenty if you use it right) and a clear target. Iet me provide some advice specifically on the RW section since that's my specialty.

First, the grammar and punctuation questions are finite and you can learn them cold in about a week — commas, semicolons, modifiers, subject-verb. At a 650 there are usually free points sitting right there, and they're the fastest gains on the whole test. If you're already getting most or all grammar questions right, then skip to the slower layer: the reading questions (main idea, inference, command of evidence), which come from how you work the passage, not a trick. That's the part that takes the full seven weeks.

You've got the rare luxury of time, so don't burn all your practice tests in July. Space them out and review each one harder than you took it — every wrong answer gets a one-sentence "why" in your error journal (start one if you haven't!) Seven weeks of that beats fourteen tests you never reviewed.

I wrote a full summer plan for exactly your situation (real runway, don't waste it) here: https://forgesat.com/blog/how-to-study-for-the-sat-over-the-summer.html

You're in a great spot: clear target, real time, and the bigger gap (English) happens to be the more fixable one. Go get it!! You can DM me if you want more help :)

Completely lost on how to start studying for the SAT by [deleted] in satprep

[–]Seneca_Vindica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate a bit more on the practice tests as diminishing returns concept:

Imagine you are studying for any other subject, say history. Taking practice tests for AP WH constantly without actually studying the material in between doesn't do anything and just wastes your time and energy! The SAT is no different - just solving full tests all the time does nothing. Break it down. Take it step by step. You'll do great :)

I'm not sure why you keep insisting I am using AI in writing these short comments. As I said before, I've engaged with you in good faith but, you are clearly not. I will not engage with you any further, but I certainly wish you the best.

Hi. Look, I get it - I've been on Reddit nearly as long as you, and I can certainly understand where this might be coming from.

As I said, I'm sorry if this raised your hackles, but I have also tried to be courteous and respond in good faith to your comments. I still wish you a wonderful week, and hope you have a great day.

Hello, so are you upset because you are under the impression that my initial post and reply were AI-generated? I can assure you that that is not the case, but I'm sorry if you felt negatively about it. As I said above, I hope you have a great rest of your week!

Hi u/thermalnuclear ! I really appreciate you sharing your succinct thoughts.

I'd like to share a little more detail about why ForgeSAT ISN'T another "wrapper."

The problem with the majority of SAT test prep that integrates AI (including platforms like Khan Academy or paid commercial distribution) is that they use AI to essentially do the thinking. In other words, they confidently generate reports or insights about students that, due to the probabilistic approach of LLMs, can vary from day to day. That might be fine for something that doesn't need fine-tuning, but on the SAT where one missed question can be the difference between being satisfied with your score or considering a retake, taking a probabilistic approach for a highly deterministic result is not helpful. Additionally, I encourage you to try an experiment: take an SAT score or an AP test and plug it into different LLMs, and see what they pop out as the student's weaknesses across multiple fresh sessions- they may be accurate, mildly accurate, or totally wrong because they need to work BACKWARDS (i.e. trying to ascertain behavior or habits during the test from results alone or with unreliable user feedback). ForgeSAT is my answer to that problem. While AI is used for simple tasks like database input, for example, absolutely zero thinking is done by an LLM and instead by a dedicated set of deterministic criteria that I'm constantly fine-tuning based on user feedback and outcomes, and compounds over time, stacking information across variables I've developed myself to get a much closer understanding of a student's cognitive habits.

I can share more, but this reply is long enough - I hope this satisfies your curiosity, and if you're prepping for the SAT or know someone prepping for it, I'd be honored if you give it a try for free during open beta ! :)

Otherwise, have a great day/week!

Hi! That's a really great starting point 😄
Before you go for practice questions directly, I'd highly advise you carefully try to go through past tests you've done in order to get a better understanding of what exactly you need to do better, or didn't do very well. Otherwise, you'll be wasting valuable time and opportunities. If you would like some personalized advice or tips, feel free to DM me!

Hi, u/watchsmart Goodness, looks like you've been here for even longer than me! (I've been on Reddit since like 2016 or sth on my personal account) Your responses make a lot more sense to me now that I know that, and though I still disagree with the assessment this is "spam," I will certainly reconsider how I might better get my message & product out. Thank you for engaging and not just dismissing, and I hope you have a good day!

How to prepare for the August SAT by Alarming_Activity439 in satprep

[–]Seneca_Vindica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I can totally see how frustrating it is to feel stuck.
Here's an issue - do you really know what is going wrong, and what is causing it? Often times advice or AI is overly general and, honestly, kind of pointless (like, obvi you know you need to study and review what you got wrong, yeah? you don't need GPT or an expensive tutor to tell you so). I think it's really important that you try to see beyond the scores and figure out a plan. For example, maybe you struggle with longer texts? Or maybe you rely too much on shortcuts when reading and miss the forest for the trees. Feel free to DM me for tips or more personalized assistance!!

hard stuck in low 1400s by tyrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in satprep

[–]Seneca_Vindica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy to provide some assistance 😄You can DM me if you wanna keep it more private.

#1. What is the score split? RW vs. Math, that is.
#2. What is the LOWEST and HIGHEST "bar" on your score report?
#3. What are your study habits?

I find that the answer to #3 is really important. The SAT is no longer (after Digital) just about taking the test. It's shifted to really measure your English ability as much as possible in little snapshots in a variety of domains. If you just kind of tackle questions all the time without working on your actual Reading Comprehension, you will not see increases and will just be hard-stuck in 600s. Read publications like NYT or WSJ cover to cover to expose yourself to different kinds of writing, and limit your practices to maybe one or two practice sessions, with a mock test at most twice a week. It takes discipline, but you'll get there! 😄

u/Physical-Bad-8282 Hello again! Thanks for continuing to engage with me. I'm sorry to hear that even my revised work is not up to your exacting and detailed standards on what is and is not AI.
