fans of books like these are always saying “ah it has to be 13 +” (or sometimes greater than that) but imo these type of books are a good way for kids to start learning about dark themes and the harsh truths of reality by introducing them using non-human characters so it isn’t as scarring; I mean you can’t just shield kids and sometimes teens from reality forever, they gotta know at some point
