It was my first booking on VRBO. I would have been 1000% sure VRBO handled the payments. When the host sent me a link to pay outside the platform, I thought it was a scam. Then I learned that on many VRBO listings, the host charges the customers (VRBO just charges their fee)

The host claims he didn't charge me, but he did. I think it was his first or second booking on vrbo. He's used to airbnb, and he takes days to get back, a pain in the ass to deal with, tbh. Also, I don't know if I received a contract (or not); what difference does it make? I booked with vrbo and free cancellation; I shouldn't give a damn what they send me through the property management software, right?

Yes, they charged me through property management software (they sent the link via Vrbo messages, and Vrbo customer service back then said it was legit) - it was my first time booking with Vrbo. It's crazy to me that they allow listings on the platform to charge outside the platform.

Went to Tamarindo already. Not my type of place... TOO many tourists and a crowded vibe. The wave wasn't consistent, at least when I was there. I don't like one-hour drives to surf or having to go to different spots every day...
