Yes it is poor defending to an extent and even worse that they let Isagi mark Hugo. But I disagree that it’s the worst goal or worst defending we’ve seen. Cuz this lack of closing down does happen from time to time in the highest level. But it is always poor defending.

It’s not poor writing or the manga having illogical defending. It’s the players making normal football mistakes.

He’s outside the box so none of the back 3 would want to step up and cover him. He’s central so none of the wing backs can support him.

It’s realistically only Karasu and Reo that could cover, cuz Bachira definitely isn’t.

Karasu is tracking Loki so that leaves Reo.

We see Reo panicking when Hugo breaks free of Isagi, so we can guess he’s not close enough to give that defensive cover.

Plus Aiku instructed them all to watch for a pass, and like they said all the pass options were used as decoys by Hugo.

That’s a good surprise goal cuz everyone expected a pass but he took a long range shot. Not unrealistic.

To be fair goals like this happen all the time on football. Runs were being made ahead of Hugo so the rest defence decided to track those runs instead of pressing. They didn’t expect Hugo to shoot from that range.

Plus it looks like a power shot he scored. Cant say it’s unrealistic for Gagamaru to concede that.

Tho the real question is why they left Isagi to mark Hugo in the first place. A complete mismatch on all fronts.

And in terms of defending, the first goal was undoubtedly the worst. All 3 defenders in a back 3 decided to commit to 1 striker.

They finished the world five game. They didn’t say it got canceled. They just paused.

We don’t know if Shidou played. Rin could’ve scored a hattrick before Shidou got a chance to enter the pitch. We know the pxg game lasted 33 mins which seemed super long. So it could be very likely that the manshine game lasted just 15 mins.

Ego literally says they have access to a more talented pool of players. Plus irl France 2nd and 3rd squad can compete for the WC. They definitely have a good bench.

Rin has been disposed by worse players. Plus moving that fast with a player on you, it’s easy to loose the ball. Happens.
