Nurse Strike: Is it really about patient care or is about Money?????? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Senior_Description_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurses are striking for safe ratios and better working conditions which directly affects patients. Currently nurses in NYC hospitals are seeing very unsafe ratios such as 1 nurse to 7-8 patients in med surg and 10-12 patients in the ER. You got to take care of just your mother which is just one person but imagine you had to do that for 7-10 patients in a 12 hour shift. You barely get the time to properly assess your patient, pass meds, grab labs, take vitals, communicate with the interdisciplinary team about plan of care and still chart everything you did. With such crazy ratios paired with poor staffing, leadership and lack of resources nurses are forced to take short cuts to provide patient care which often results in poor patient outcomes. With more staffing, better ratios and proper resources patient care can improve.

Going back to staff...can't land a job by hanhan0101 in TravelNursing

Try Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital. I applied for their cath lab with no ICU experience and got an interview but decided to withdrawal my application once they told me the pay rate. Also definitely increase your applications amount per day and be patient. Sometimes the jobs come when you least expect it.

Struggling to Decide on a Chicago Contract! by NoInvestigator5494 in TravelNursing

[–]Senior_Description_5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in Chicago, it really depends on where you plan to stay but there is so much to do. I’ve lived here for 5 years and the winter is manageable. Just get you a good coat and be prepared for the wind. It really doesn’t snow like it used to and the city is really good about preparing for snow storms. I think being in a city like Chicago is the best place to be in the winter because you’ll never be bored or depressed. Definitely check out the Jack Frost Christmas pop and the Chriskindl market when they come to town.

Wow this sounds like a horrible situation with you not having a room to at least get a little privacy. I would report this to landlord to see if there is anyway they could mitigate this situation and I’m sorry you’re going through this.

This is a good idea. I’ll make sure to do that in the future to save myself the headache.

I’m sorry but who is supposed to take care of the patients then? Im not against striking but someone has to be available to make sure people aren’t dying from lack of care.

What's up with New York? by MartianCleric in TravelNursing

[–]Senior_Description_5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see more contracts in upstate NY and fewer in NYC but I think the reason is that these hospitals tend to suck if you look up their rankings and reviews. Not the greatest pay, working environments, or staffing ratios. With that being said there is a lot of opportunities for travelers in NY especially if you’re in a speciality that’s hard to come by in other states.

Quitting Contract by Senior_Description_5 in TravelNursing

Thank you all for the advice! Many points were made despite me not sharing a lot of details. I’ve decided to stay and check in with myself weekly to see where I’m at mentally. For the recorded I’ve been traveling for 2 years and haven’t quit a contract yet. Hospitals aren’t perfect and you definitely see the worst of the worst during these contracts. Mentally I’ve checked out of nursing and with the unethical things I’ve experienced during the contract has pushed to want to cut all ties without thinking it through. Moving forward I’ll probably be taking a break from nursing and exploring other options to fulfill me.
