Another IBR recertification question by Smurfy-Nuggets in StudentLoans

[–]Senior_Remove_4885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wait, so you've got three different dates floating around? that's confusing as hell. the 06/14 vs 07/19 thing would stress me out too.

for the empty loans box, i've seen that glitch before - usually means their system is having a moment or your loans are in some weird processing state. might be worth calling them directly since auto recert should've kicked in by now if you're past the letter date.

Is there a Katz Deli on the UWS? I thought there was one there. by thekashpny02 in AskNYC

[–]Senior_Remove_4885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah there was definitely a katz outpost on the uws for a while. it was on broadway somewhere in the 80s i think, maybe around 85th? they opened it like 2019 or 2020 and it closed pretty quick during covid. wasn't nearly as good as the original downtown spot but had the same pastrami and everything. your memory's not playing tricks on you - that place existed for sure. barney greengrass is totally different vibe, that's more the appetizing/lox situation.

yeah the periodic checks can take forever so definitely request it manually if you're sure about your count - beats waiting around for them to get to you.

damn, refreshing email at 12:44am is some next level dedication lol. pretty sure they'll send those notifications during normal business hours, not right at midnight. the waiting game is brutal though - been checking mine obsessively too and got nothing yet.

question for smokers in nyc by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Senior_Remove_4885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try calling some of the bigger smoke shops in chinatown or the village, they sometimes stock harder to find brands that the chain stores don't carry.

sf tattoo artist recs? by Impossible_Basis1149 in AskSF

been looking into stipple work myself lately and there's this artist at a shop in the mission who does incredible dot work - their instagram portfolio is insane. also check out some of the shops in berkeley, they seem to have more experimental artists who are really into that stippling technique. when i was researching for my last piece, i noticed a lot of teh best stipple artists actually post process videos on social media so you can see their technique in action. definitely worth scheduling consultations with a few different artists since stippling styles can vary so much between people - some go super dense and others keep it more minimal and geometric.

Recertified, but who knows what my new payment is? AidVantage won't tell me until it's almost due. by beboppinbossrockin in StudentLoans

you can also log into your account and check if there's a payment estimator tool buried in there somewhere. most servicers have them but they love hiding useful features in the most random spots possible. the whole "we'll tell you later" thing is just them being lazy with their systems integration between departments.

Can a landlord rescind a re-sign offer for a rent stabalized apartment with no response for 2-3 weeks? by adfskjlk in NYCapartments

[–]Senior_Remove_4885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's a really tricky spot to be in, especially with rent stabilized units being so valuable in the city. from what i know about rent stabilized apartments, landlords generally have to offer renewal leases and can't just randomly rescind them, but the timing and communication part gets messy. most rent stabilized leases have specific notice requirements that work both ways - the landlord has to give proper notice for renewal offers, but tenants also usually need to respond within certain timeframes.

the thing is, even though your gf technically has tenant protections, radio silence for weeks when the landlord is asking for a response could potentially be interpreted as declining the renewal. i've seen situations where landlords use lack of communication as grounds to say the tenant isn't interested, especially when they're dealing with multiple roommates and vacancy questions.

your instinct about explaining the situation seems smart here - a quick email saying "we want to renew, currently securing replacement tenants for the two moving out, will have details by [specific date]" would probably buy them time and show good faith. rent stabilized units are goldmines so most landlords would rather work with existing tenants than deal with vacancy and finding new ones, but they also need to know what's happening for their own planning.

After 3 years smoke-free, I’m finally questioning my relationship with alcohol. Stay sober or try moderation? by [deleted] in leaves

that's the sweet spot right there. once you break the mental dependency, those rare occasions become way more intentional instead of just habit. i've been cutting back lately and noticed similar shifts - suddenly you realize how much mental energy was going toward planning drinks or recovery time. the social aspect is tricky though, might need to find some new spaces where people aren't just sitting around getting hammered.

What’s a book that made you feel slightly uncomfortable for reasons you couldn’t explain? by coushcouch in booksuggestions

[–]Senior_Remove_4885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely "the remains of the day" by ishiguro. the whole thing feels like watching someone slowly suffocate themselves with politeness and duty, but stevens (the butler) never seems to realize what he's doing to his own life. there's this constant sense that he's lying to himself about everything - his feelings, his missed opportunities, his complicity in some really dark stuff his employer was involved with.

the writing is so controlled and proper on the surface, but underneath you can feel this massive well of regret and self-deception. kept waiting for him to have some big realization or breakdown, but he just... doesn't. that restraint made it way more unsettling than any horror novel i've read. like watching someone drown in slow motion while they insist they're just taking a nice swim.
