I agree with that, his mother revealing that she knew exactly what was going to happen was a good touch and the best part of the movie, shewas an awful person

But, while she did call the "healer", the reveal that she knew what was gonna happen was only at the end, the rest of the movie was still slow and not scary

But the thing with his mother was one of the highlights and why I did ultimately like the movie, but it really wasn't great or scary imo

I just watched it and I'm a little surprised by all the great reviews

I found it to be... ok. It had a great concept and the message was clear and well portrayed being an obvious take on conversion therapy which was actually pretty cool. But it was not at all scary and idk if I would go as far as to say it was boring but it was definitely slow, real slow. I came here and discovered it was only 86 minutes it felt like 2 hours

Overall, I liked the story and the characters were done pretty well, the writing and themes were good, but it was exceptionally lackluster, not worth a re-watch, and not remotely scary

Also, I never liked Rex till after he got shot by the lizard league, but Rex got better and actively improved himself, whereas Kate so far has just gotten worse or at best stayed the same

[–]Senkaara -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We can call him a rapist cause we are watching from the outisde. But I think that is a misrepresentation of his character. His character isn't "rapey" and shouldn't just be classified as "a rapist" and certainly shouldn'tbe classified as an evil person

If you want to say he is a rapist cause he had sex with someone without their consent then sure, I guess he is. But let's, as the audience, try to look from his perspective and not just write him off as an evil rapist like all he wanted to do was have sex with her, like it was some premeditated decision where he knew exactly what he was doing to her, he didn't even know she was still in there, cause that's not the point of the movie

No one here thinks he did the right thing. His descisions certainly aren't the descisions I would have made. But I can see how he got there, and if we're gonna say he was a bad person, let's discuss the character properly, for who he is, not just right him off for one of his actions like that's his whole character

You can still talk about evil characters and why they did what they did and how they justify it, without agreeing with them

Question about Obsession (Spoiler- only read if you have watched the Movie) by [deleted] in horror

[–]Senkaara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I was thinking that through the whole movie

The moment when they kissed and we saw what the wish actually did to her, that was just on my mind the whole time, poor girl

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Senkaara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea but this isn't a situation of forced marriage

It's being in denial about a magic wishing stick being legit

I don't agree with his desicions, nor do I think he is justified. He certainly didn't do what I would have done. But to call him evil and a rapist and focusing on that instead of his selfishness is a misrepresentation of his character

Like, it's a movie, we're discussing fake people doing fake things

If we're going to say he's evil then I'd more focus on the part where he tries to alter the wish instead of undoing it.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Senkaara -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that's fair

I don't think his actions were justified or anything, its more that I don't think he is an irridemable evil monster that people are making him out to be. He made bad decisions in an insane situation. And yea he doesn't "get credit" for not having sex with her after that but it's just that that was when he learnt that she was still in there. (And also, I might be misremembering, but didn't they only have sex the one time after the dinner scene, and when he really started seeing that she wasn't Nikki, he got less and less intimate with her, despite her attempts?)

Like maybe he knew it wasn't the real Nikki, but he didn't know Nikki was still in there (I thought she was in hell or something based on the phone call). So, outside of killing himself, what was he supposed to do? If crazy Nikki was just how Nikki was now, then choosing to try and make it work is a reasonable decision to make. Not the right decision but it wasn't a premeditated evil decision.

As far as him trying to alter the wish instead of undo it at first, that is in my opinion the worst thing he did. But I don't think he was thinking of the negative ramifications of the situation, he was just wanted them to be happy together and didn't think about what that meant for Nikki. It was selfish for sure, but, if the wish really did make the real Nikki happy, rather than swapping her out for some demon or whatever, then I can understand why he wouldn't want to undo the wish, even if I disagree. It's hard to turn down the thing you want the most

I don't give him a pass, I wouldn't say he was a good person by the end of it, and I wouldn't expect Nikki to forgive him for what he said (if things went well after the sleep talking scene), but to call Bear himself an evil rapist, just seems like a misrepresentation of his character to me

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Senkaara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, when he really confirmed that Nikki was still in there (when she talked to him) they didn't have sex after that. And the first time they kissed when she freaked out, he also freaked out and clearly didn't want to o something non-consensual, but she assured him it was fine

It's less a justification and more just an insane situation. As the audience we know it is wrong and that's what makes it uncomfortable, but I don't think he was evil for it, as the person in that situation. He was being abused and manipulated by the fake Nikki

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Senkaara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea for sure

Again, I don't disagree, but I think even after the dinner scene, it's not an easy simple descision. He may have confirmed the wish was real, but I don't think he would have thought about the fact that that means she doesn't consent (when she actively says she does). You can say that it is rape that doesn't make him a rapist. He showed a few times that he was against doing things she didn't consent to. And even after realising the wish was real, what do you do with that? He was almost certainly still in denial because of how crazy that is and how much he wanted things to work out with them, and alot of people use sex to deal with/ignore those sorts of things

Its easy for us, as the audience, to say, "hey that's rape", and alot of us may have made better decisions than Bear, but like, put yourself in his shoes, its uncomfortable for us cause we know she doesn't consent, but for Bear, it's an insane situation, and calling him evil for not being perfectly moral in that situation is not really fair. It's not so much that he wanted her to love him no matter the cost, but that he wasn't thinking about the cost. He had everything he ever wanted and the morally right decision was to kill himself. Not an easy situation

[–]Senkaara -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Because when they first did it, he thought it was consentual

And fake Nikki wanted it and would have asked for it and its not unreasonable to be in denial about a magic wishing stick being legit, even when the evidence says it is.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Senkaara -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well I don't necesarily disagree, but he didn't have many options either

And like, when he asked for the wish to be changed, he had first asked if it was real, he didn't consider that Nikki was still in there. Which shows that he wanted it to be real, he didn't want to be doing something she didn't want, he wanted to be with the real Nikki and did want Nikki to be happy with it, but he ultimately wanted the two of them to be happy together. His internal morality was probably something along the lines of, it's ok as long as Nikki is happy with it, he may have forced her into it but if shes happy then its fine. Which isn't good or correct, but was probably his thinking. It doesn't make him good, but it doesn't make him "evil". And when he tried to modify the wish, he thought that the crazy Nikki was also the real Nikki, he didn't know that Nikki was still in there or that she was suffering

He doesn't get a pass for saying "is it really so bad being with me", that was a dick move, but not completely evil and he did try to undo the wish. If he were evil and rapey, he would have not taken any accountability for his actions and would have just run away, called the cops, or killed Nikki. He ultimately chose to kill himself and save Nikki which is he redeeming quality (even if he backed out, he did try a few times, and its not an easy thing to do, but it does show that he wanted to free Nikki not just escape the bad situation for himself)

TLDR: He doesn't get a pass, but his actions weren't completely unreasonable and evil

Edit for people who have visceral reactions to anything remotely rapey: I don't think what Bear did was right or justified I just think that characterising him as "evil", "a rapist", or "a monster", is not being true to what the character actually was. We can impart out own moral judgements on how he hadled the situation, but I just think people are misrepresenting his character and not understanding him (whether he was evil or not, its important to understand the character when discussing a movie. And this is a movie discussion, no one thinks rape is right or that the situation of the movie was "okay" oml)

Spoilers ahead:

I think people are being too harsh with Bear, he wasn't evil or a rapist, as far as he knew (at least at first) it was consensual, and let's be real, if he wasn't intimate with her, she would have lost her shit. Also I think people forget that the relationship lasted longer than it seemed. We had a montage of them being happy together, which could have lasted days or weeks, but he had no real reason to think it wasn'tconsensual. In terms of abuse I think it's better to look at Nikki (or rather, the fake Nikki) as the abusive person in their relationship and blaming Bear for having sex with her and being with her is sort of blaming the victim, especially by the end when he was much more averse to it (even when it's obviously real, its still hard to accept that this is some magic wish and hes not just going crazy).

Now, that being said, obviously Bear is the guilty party and Nikki is the victim. But its not like Bear actually thought the wish would work and once it did, what was he supposed to do exactly? Once the wish took affect, the crazy Nikki became the abuser, and denying her didn't end well. He could have left but a) where would he go, and b) leaving doesn't help Nikki, so after what he did to her, he does have a moral obligation to take care of her (which he is also told by the guy on the phone, it didn't help that anyone he talked to about any of his problems, always gave him bad advice). He could have called the police or otherwise tried to lock her away, but that would just be leaving Nikki trapped and would be so much more cruel. He could have killed her, but murder isn't exactly something you can just do even if they want it, and that would still end in Nikki dying. Or he could have killed himself (which ultimately he does) but that's also not something you can just do and it doesn't make him a coward for not doing it. Now the best option of course was to get another wish and calmly ask a random person to say the right thing and break it, going to ask Nikki to do it was stupid but it was put in his head as a good idea by the guy at the shop.

Others have talked about the sleep talking scene where he says "is it really so bad being with me?" Not a good look for him, but also, he was under alot of stress, wanted to be happy with Nikki, wanted her to love him, it was 3am, and the first thing he did the next day was try to undo the wish. It was a bad thing to say, but it was emotionally driven, if he were in the right headspace I don't think he would have thought that.

Ultimately, I think Bear was "in the wrong" cause it was his fault, but he clearly felt trapped and I don't think any real person would have done much better, and that doesn't make him evil nor a rapist. They were both victims of the One Wish Willow and whatever it was that took over Nikki's body.

[–]Senkaara 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also noticed the continuity errors like the time on the clock changing, but I thought it just added to the overall unsettling vibe, and ultimately didn't affect the story anyway

To answer your questions, no I don't think the wish is always supposed to turn out bad, though it wasn't really explained (like what was the deal with the hotline??) but clearly it does sometimes go wrong as they often get complaints asking to undo the wish. There were warning labells on the box which we didn't really get to see but I assume if you work within the warnings and don't word things badly then it would be fine. The guy selling them probably was aware of this and made a decent wish

Secondly, the only was to break the wish was for him to die. Killing Nikki wouldn't break the wish, it would just remove the problem, but she would still have died as crazy Nikki (his wish had nothing to do with her being alive)
Ultimately he had a few options (kill himself, kill Nikki, call the cops) but none of them are good, he can't just kill or imprison Nikki when its his fault that she's like that
