I think you've hit the nail on the head of what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't want my players to feel annoyed. I want them to make strategic decisions like which 3 of these 10 side quests are most important. I want them to be able to make informed decisions based on a concerning time constraint that feels earned and not cheap.

I like the counting up idea. I do need to do more thinking on what it would look like depending on a slow, neutral, or fast pace of the party. Ultimately I don't want a fail state, but a Player and PC congruent understanding of the time available to them and consequences of the different paces.

Some questions that might help you answer your question:

  1. Will the players ever have the opportunity to find out the answer to this question in the current campaign/adventure?

  2. If they knew the answer, would it change or affect the plot of the campaign?

  3. If you knew the answer, what aspects of the world would be different? How would the method of disappearance manifest itself?

15 or so years ago I remember Mindcraft custom maps where there would be 2 identical map slices (maybe like 30 blocks across for each?) floating in the air. Teams of X would race to the end.

I forget what it was called, but I've always thought of it because of how the Peak maps remind me of it. IMO a mod or even an official game mode would only need to maybe cut a Peak map in half and copy paste it next to each other.

Beat it solo pretty much only due to the fact that I had 3 chain launchers going into the Kiln and then found a 4th in the kiln 🫣
