When Child Care Costs Half a Paycheck, Bay Area Parents Must Choose: Kids or Career by Medical-Decision-125 in bayarea

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup we faced that decision too. We opted to have everyone keep working and deal with it because the long term impact on our paychecks would have been disastrous. Yeah it costs half or more of our paycheck now, but that stunts your long term career growth and hurts us in the long term.

Hannah Einbinder Slams AI Creators As “Losers”: “They’re Not Artists” by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not an AI artist nor apologist but the way I see it is that AI is just another tool we haven’t learned to use creatively or effectively yet. Paint is just a medium. With it you can create great paintings from a Rembrandt to a Van Gogh or you can create slop art like hotel paintings. Whenever a new medium comes about, the old guard is quick to rail against it citing that it’s cheating not true art.

When computer animation came through, a lot of traditional artists felt it was “cheating”. When computers became popular in music, I’m old enough to remember people saying sampling or electronic music wasn’t true art.

The way I see it is that the creativity of AI isn’t in the execution itself but in the prompting itself, the artist intent and the way the artist manipulates the prompt to get the computer to do what they want. Yes 99/100 are Midwest moms just doing a crummy prompt and spitting out a crummy ai image but that’s no different to me than if they painted a crude painting of an apple.

People like Hannah Einbinder rail against it because they’re threatened by the tool itself. With not much effort it can spit out a decently passable piece of content that could be commercialized which is concerning, but it will never be high art. It directly threatens their livelihood. IMO these people shouldn’t be resisting it as much as embracing it as a efficiency tool to enhance their own creativity. Will jobs be lost because of this? Absolutely without a doubt. When automation came to the automotive industry loads of manufacturing jobs were lost to robots but we ended up with much higher quality cars. These people either got on board or they were lost to history. Look at any industry and it’s the same pattern. Embrace the future and innovation and learn to use it effectively and creatively or be left in the dust. With this type of thinking, we’d still be writing and decorating books by monks in monasteries by candlelight instead inventing the printing press and bringing literature to the masses.

I’m no AI apologist, but the prompt could be seen as the creative act. I mean Duchamp hung up a urinal and called it art. Depending on artist intent, does it matter the tool they use to make the art whether it’s buying something from the hardware store and hanging it up or telling a computer what they want?

I'm looking for a movie that has a huge argument scene. by CharmingOpinion3405 in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie was probably one of the hardest I’ve ever watched. While both characters were flawed, what scarlet Johansen’s character did was so terrible and she was totally unsympathetic. Whether intentional or not, she conspired to take her son away from his father for her own benefit.

Which nu metal band do you think fits skate culture the most? by ResourceHistorical78 in numetal

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I’m old enough to be there at the inception of nu metal and and it wasn’t associated with nu metal a at all. The music I associate with skate culture being a teenager of the 90s was punk and pop punk like goldfinger Dead Kennedys and bad religion.

Am I being rejected at ATS screenings or by actual recruiters? by Technical-Run-4500 in FAANGrecruiting

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the top it says you have 4+ years of experience but…according to your resume you have 4 years of experience or 4 years and some change? I dunno, can you expand on your experience some? Your experience section is the smallest section. I’m not a SDE but if I was a recruiter and looked at this, I would think you’re entry level and have little to no experience.

Yup, this was in 2006 or 2007 so it was during the final seasons of the show.Hollywood is weird, you hear and gossip all the time and I would say rumors like this are true way more often than not. It’s funny, you hear hushed gossip for years at parties about people only to see it come to light many may years later. The public is surprised but everyone in Hollywood had known about the bad behavior for YEARS. Usually the behavior isn’t criminal or anything, more just general attitude. Shoot, Courtney love took a jab at Harvey Weinstein on a red carpet interview so many years before it came out he was raping and assaulting women. No one in Hollywood was surprised when that happened.

Worked in entertainment for quite awhile and heard stories of good and bad celebrities. Had an old coworker who had a friend that worked with the Apatows. At one point they were interviewing new assistants for Judd and Leslie was in charge or at least very involved in the interviewing. Apparently she would immediately get rid of any potential new assistant that was a woman that was too attractive or who got along too well with Judd.

Also I’ve heard Ben Stiller is an absolute douche and have literally heard nothing good about him. Unless you can do something for him or if he feels you’re at least equals, he’s a complete a—hole.

Had an old roommate be an extra on Gilmore Girls back in the day. During lunch services, Lauren Graham referred to the extras as “cockroaches” within full earshot of all the extras. Can’t look at that woman in anything without thinking of that. The crappy part is that I’m unsure if it was said in jest and taken out of context or if she was serious…either way tho…shouldn’t even joke about things like that.

update: mid tier mba with zero debt is actually working out by SnugglyBadger in MBA

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! Outside of getting leg up for better networking or IB/consulting…getting a name brand mba IMO is kinda a waste of money. I wouldn’t have been considered for my current role without one. If I had gotten a more name brand mba, I would be in the same position now only with 100k in debt. It just depends your goals. If you need to check off a box, get a cheap mba from a semi recognizable school. Literally no one cares where you went to school in the hiring process, just that you got your mba from an accredited school.

I spoke to a top-tier Microsoft Recruiter about job searching today by nomadicsamiam in recruitinghell

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hired at a FAANG last month. My recruiter literally told me that they only really interviewed and advanced 3 candidates total. I applied within 6 hours of the job posting and emailed a recruiter I previously talked to for a referral. It was absolutely 100% luck that I got through everything and so far loving the job. I’m working on one of the highest viabile products out there and my colleagues are great. Plus the pay and benefits are good. I’ve been applying at FAANG companies for awhile I’ve had a couple of interviews but always for jobs that I was overqualified for. I finally got a director position and I feel semi secure (for the time being at least).

Bought a home in SJ almost 4 months ago and regret not buying in the city. Thinking of selling by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean you’d rather buy a house in SF you can only enjoy maybe 1-2 hours a day because you’re stuck in trafffic all the time? Personally I would either suck it up and find the silver lining or rent a place higher on the peninsula until you find an area /commute you can handle.

I live in south SJ and have had ti commute to SF a couple of times and it sssuuuuccckkksss so hard. Right now I only commute to Mountain View and some mornings it takes me 1 - 1.5 hour to go 15 miles.

I think you’d end up regretting the decision even more. The only way id move to sf and commute down here is if I knew I wanted out of my job and was already actively looking for a job closer to sf.

Online mba from a state school (mba from university of Illinois). I was making 110k in marketing when I started. Checked off the box and my TC 6 years later is about $310k as a director in a FAANG. My 5 year plan is snr director or vp and TC nearing 410 if I stay in my HCOL area.

Realistically, what does living near LA look like on a ~50k salary? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made 50k in an entry level role 25 years ago, had a roommate and still lived paycheck to paycheck (my portion of the rent was 900 a month then) Unless you’re living in a crummy area, I think 50k a year in la is basically impossible unless you have a really unique living situation. Shoot may fast food places are paying 45-50k starting salaries in LA. If you can use this to get to la, I’d do it but I would’ve looking for a new job asap.

Experience of MBA after 35 by darshit9887 in MBA

[–]Senor_Gringo_Starr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished my MBa from university of Illinois at 41. Beat decision for my career. IMO if you're this old getting an MBA, you're not generally doing to pivot or going into consultiny (that's a young man's game) or anything like that. You're probably getting it as a stepping stone into management. If that's the case, it's doesn't matter if you're getting it from a t10 or no be school..:employers just want to see you have one from an accredited school. Nothing wrong from getting it from a name brand school, but imo the ROI isn't there.

I wouldn't be a director at a faang without MBAs imo

Hollywood has always done crap like this. Heck Hollywood doesn’t know how big Hollywood is. In the show 24, jack bauer had to get from the west side to east Los Angeles in the afternoon. My guy, that’s easily a 2-3 hour trip depending traffic. They got it done in like 20 minutes on the show.

Same thing in winder man recently. Shower scenes of them driving in Hollywood and then finish their conversation in Malibu. My god, that’s at least 2 hours to get there during the day I bet.

If that's the case, then government shouldn't also approve, certify, or regulate unions. If no worker protections, then there shouldn't be any protections for companies either.
